Is the man who fitted the belt known by you to be the genuine article i.e.
have real knowledge, or is he just full of confidence?
If it ran before the belt broke it should run now, if the timing is correct.
That's my favourite for a diagnosis.
Son-in-law had one of those (2.5 transporter). So I know the setup and I
never tackle anything like that just thinking I know how to do it. There are
some that think they do but not many outside garages.
Only other thing I can think of is has the stop solenoid stuck on? i.e. when
you turn the "ignition" key to the stop position there is normally a
solenoid that causes the injector pump to go to the zero inject position in
order to stop the engine. You can usually hear it release a few seconds
after the engine stops in order to allow the next start to take place. If
that sticks in the off position it'll crank until hell freezes over without
result.
