I am looking to buy a new tent and would value advice. Previously a
lightweight camper I'm now looking for luxury and would like a spacious
tent with sufficient headroom to stand (?4-6 person). Only 2 of us but
we plan to travel by car so packed size and weight are not a major
issue. Ease of erection is. Fairweather camping (we hope) so ? 2seasons
ok. Wondering about cheaper ranges such as Gelert and Coleman for
instance Gelert Utah, Coleman Columbus 4 or Cedar Creek but price not
crucial. Open to suggestions!

Also does anyone know of a good place to view tents on display in
Lancs/Mersey area?

Don't bet on it in the UK.
The number times we have pitched in fine weather, and the weather has
turned bad. Once it blew down the tent despite all my efforts.

There was a place a couple of years ago near Shrewsbury. If you come down
the road from Liverpool to Shrewsbury it was at one of the junctions.
Whether it's still there however... Look in the Yellow pages under camping
supplies then ring up the shops to see if they have displays.

Winfields of Haslingden have a good range of tents on display, little tip, if
you go at this time of year you can see how they have stood up to being out
all summer, the Vango Aspens 500/700 both ripped on the porch poles, also some
good offers on display tents but be careful,a lot of people have walked
through them, you could trace where one silly bitch had gone in & out of all
the big tents wearing high heels.

I've had an Aztec Palatio 6 man for 3-4 years, huge thing with lots of
room, great headroom at about 6'.6". Last time out it was just me, my wife
and the little 'un (he's 9). Loads of room. At 60 lbs it's definately a car
job though. Bloody well made and still looks new. I have heard of one chap
who has one and parks his Morris Minor in it when he goes to classic car
meets.

Hiya, I bought an Outwell Indiana 6 at the start of July and have used
it several times from weekend trips to my main holiday. It has two
good sized bedroom pods and a large living area with plenty of storage
pockets. One bedroom pod can be removed which increases the living
space. It has a hydrostatic head of 5000 so will easily stand up to
what the British weather can throw at it. They are a bit heavy and
packed into two bags..one for the tent and one for the poles. I can
recomend these tents

We bought a Vario 6 by Sunncamp back at the beginning of summer. Huge
tunnel style tent with 4 "shatterproof" bendy hoops. Tent is about 4.3
m x 5m approx . 2 bedrooms which will sleep 3 in each side by side at
one end and a sizable living area. Standing room is good too.
I think Sunncamp have redesigned the new version with built in
groundsheet but we have the older version. Whole fron panel is
removable or you can just open the zippin door. Also has side entrance
and plentyful windows providing lots of light.
Takes about an hour to fully erect and the packed bag is fairly heavy.

We are very happy with it. Four of us (adults) went to The Picos de
Europa and the Pyrennees for 3 weeks and had no problems. Sunncamp do
make a larger version with even more living space if you need it, but
you may find that one too big for many pitches.

We have a Outwell Montana 6, we like it very much, three of us. Our
daughter doesn't like sleeping in the sleeping compartment, so she
sleeps in the main tent at night, and we use her sleeping compartment
for clothes, etc and changing room. Easy to erect once you get the
hang of it. Good waterproof rating. Sewn in groundsheet which I
think is a must. Plenty of head room, but struggling a bit in the
bedroom compartments - can only get a double airbed in each sleeping
compartment, not 3 as recommended on the Outwell site.

Hope this helps

Hi

We have an Outwell Montana 6 and for my money it is hard to beat, it is easy
to erect (myself and wife), sewn in groundsheet (very big plus) has
considerably more space than the Montana 4 for not much extra money. On our
first outing with it on the west coast of Scotland we had a force 9 gale two
nights running (official not just a guess, we have a boat so need to know),
although admitedly somewhat alarming the tent stood up fine. As one of your
other replies points out the sleeping compartments would struggle with
three, but there is only two of us (and of you also) so that isn't a
problem.

Winfields of Haslingden probably has the largest permanent tent display I
have seen in the North West, but the other camping equipement is not so good
and it is only part of their business, they also seem to employ mainly
teenagers who are not in the least knowledgeable or even interested. I
prefer Camperlands at Northenden, Manchester http://www.camperlands.co.uk ,
camping is their sole business and it shows, GoOutDoors in Stockport is also
worth a look http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk

Ian,

Interesting your comments on the Montana 6 tent. My views are:

on the positive:

This tent is spacious, comfortable, will withstand high winds, and is ideal
for a family of four. I have just returned from a two week holiday during
August in France with my family and we had a fantastic time using this tent.

on the negative side:

It is difficult to put up. Maybe it's the way I'm doing it, but it takes
three of us to do it, and I'm sure I'll rip the tent one day. By the way:
Look at the Outwell internet site for video instructions on how to put this
tent up. The video is hilarious. The tent goes from flat to erect in 3
seconds !!!! (Watch it and you'll see what I mean).

Secondly: the alloy pole that supports the roof of the side entrance porch
snapped when my two year old child tripped up and fell into the tent on the
second day of our holiday. I wrote to Outwell to get a replacement and got
no reply, despite three e-mails. Eventually, I got replacement poles from
good old Blacks which will do the job (They will need to be cut to the right
length).

Yes, I would buy this tent again. Pity Outwell has terrible customer
service.
