The above ogranisations (explained below) formed the 'Boating Alliance'. I
have an article in 'British Marine News' dated Feb/March 2001 in which
Executive director of the BMIF, Howard Pridding says:
' The alliance will provide a forum in which all these important groups can
take a co-ordinated and united approach to strategic issues of major
importance to the boating industry and boat users'
Edmund Whelan of the RYA comments
'The purpose of the newly formed boating alliance is to heighten public and
political awareness of the economic and social importance of boating, to
encourage participation and new facilitites and to discourage uneccessary
regulation of the sport'
Maybe this goes part way to answering some of the questions raised in the
newsgroup and can contribute steps to the closer working between water users
also as commented in the newsgroup.

Thanks for this. This sounds as if it may hold some promise but I have
to comment; if, apart from yourself, we didn't and the rowers didn't
have any knowledge of this alliance, is it just a name? If the boating
alliance exists as more than a gesture, why are our NGBs keeping quiet
about it? Have the members of the alliance a collective view of weir
safety and improvements? I realise you may not be able to answer these
questions, they are addressed to the world at large.
