HT Relay
I am trying to select a relay for a delayed HT switch (which will also discharge the HT when off). Most relays I can find have contacts rated at 250VAC which translates into a peak of about 350V. However, data is scarce on what dc voltage these relays can switch. So far I have found only one that gives a dc current versus voltage curve and that stops at... more »

PCB layout affecting audio quality
Hi All, I was laying out a pcb tonight for a line amplifier using a tool called PCB Wizard (a good little tool) and reminiscing to myself how I used to do it in the past using black tape and a scalpel onto clear film. Despite the ability of PCB Wizard to autoroute etc., I still prefer to lay the track out myself. As well as the obvious topological challenge, I... more »

Record Shops
"Iain Churches" <Iai...@kolumbus.fi> wrote ...Well let me see. 10 mins in one direction there's a small co-op, a post office, a newsagents and a teashop. The post office does sell a few cheap DVDs, but no audio. 10 minutes in the opposite direction there's a post-office cum general store. 20 minutes away in yet another direction... more »

The price of valves
Interesting insight into the way things were in the 60s - I've just been reading a Wireless World from November of that year. Valves (tubes for those across the pond) were extremely cheap. And transistors cost pretty much the same, which is why we treated them with kid gloves and thermal shunts when soldering them into circuits.... more »

'Dual' record player dismantlement ?
...Most of them are cheap rubbish and a waste of money, the results will sound abysmal. One good one though is the 'Pro-Ject Debut', available from proper hi-fi shops, chains include 'Richer Sounds', 'Sevenoaks Sound & Vision', 'Practical Hi-Fi' (no that's not a magazine, but 'Hi- Fi World' is) and 'Superfi', not Maplin/Argos/Currys etc. I've had my... more »

It's Denon's famous RJ45 ethernet link cable. [link] What kind of PR is this for an otherwise reputable brand? ?:~

Tech. Spec. for AKG 'SolidTube' mic?
Anyone here with 'mic savvy' who can say if the tech spec on the valve mic I've just bought is OK? (All looks positively *luvverly* to me but what TF do I know? :-) Cut & paste from the online manual (formatting lost, of course): 3. Technical Specifications Operating principle: Large diaphragm pressure gradient microphone with... more »
