I am thinking of getting one of these http://tinyurl.com/423nxe JVC head
units. It has all the features I want, especially the ipod control and the
front panel audio in socket, but also the remote so I can control the radio
while in the camper and not have to reach into the cab to adjust things.

All I don't know is how it sounds? Do most of the decent head units sound
similar? or are there big differences? I don't want to boom down the road
like a 17 year old, but the extra power of I guess around 20 watts RMS per
channel (they quote 45 watts max) should get over the engine noise on the
noisiest journeys.
