Thanks for pointing that out - no other society comes even close to

Crikey!

A true statement about the representation of the RSGB.

How did that get past the censor?

Don't worry, the age of criminal responsibility will be legislated

The UK doesn't have 65000 radio amateurs. It does, however, have many
thousands of pretend amateurs like M3s,M6s and loads of brain-dead CBers
who took advantage of the dumbing-down of requirements. They may have a
licence but they will never be radio amateurs.

I hold a G1 callsign. I was quite happy with the fact that to take out what
was then the A licence I needed to learn Morse, and was doing so. I will
admit that had I passed the 12 wpm I probably wouldn't have used the code
much - as is the case for most former A licencees.

However, along came someone who said my license now covers HF, and I'm happy
with that as well. I certainly wasn't going to turn it down! One only has to
listen on the bands to some of the G3s and G4s - or indeed read some of the
purile messages posted here - to know that having passed the 12 wpm Morse
test does not automatically make someone a better amateur, a better
operator, or a better person.

Just a question

In the days of yesteryear when the morse test was a requirement

I'm told that following the EARLY days the compulsory morse test you had to spend
the first twelve month on the key

Proving that you had sufficient contacts before you could progress on to using
phone

Then THEY made things easier , only twelve month before you were allowed on the
bands using phone , no need to prove your CW contacts

So I'm told a lot of lazy arsed class "a's" sat on their hand for twelve months

This of course can not be true , there's no such thing as a lazy arsed class "A"

You've only got to ask an old timer like Wlat if there's any truth , I'm sure
he'll know

Somewhere around 50 years ago I recall a well-known Amateur with a
call in the G3AA* series saying that he was so keen to get on the air
he did so without having a licence. When it finally turned up in the
post, the callsign he was allocated was the one he'd already been
using. No lazy-arse there!

If you are suggesting that operators ought to just transmit without a
license, then that is a ridiculous argument which you should be ashamed
of. If most never upgrade, is that perhaps that many may be happy at low
power? The 2EO > M0 route is there for the so-called "real" amateur

We are talking G3A's here. Everyone was at it then. The US CB band has
it's roots in the popularity of yapping away on the "liberated"19

Interesting; thanks for the anecdote. The ham that got me into amateur
radio was a formerly in R Signals.

The only point I am trying to make is that presently the rules are that
newcomers have to become either an M3 or M6 as first real legitimate
step. Therefore it is wrong for people to denigrate M3/M6 callsigns on
that basis alone.

No. There is no requirement for anyone to actually become an M3/M6 (or
even a 2E). You only have to pa$$ the exam$. Pa$$ the F, I and the
'Advanced' exam$, and you can get a Full Licence.

No one denigrates the M3 or M6 calls

What they do DENIGRATE is those that

1) Don't progress after many years

2) Insist on running QRO 100 Watts instead of 10 watts

My beef is some locals around here that seem to think its clever to "Inherit a so
called friends call" and then pretend they've had "That call" for years

So the answer is to PROGRESS , use the M6 as it is now as a stepping stone then
move onwards and upwards in months rather than years

It's certain you'll be held in higher esteem than those that sit on their hand for
a decade and do nowt

Me , if I'd been able to crack morse I'd had a licence in the 1950's not the late
1970's

Even George "ZQS" threw the towel in after 3 or more years , Ivy's tea was good
tho '

G3s are / were UK callsigns.

The WS19 was a British set, although some were built in Canada (inc some
with Russian dials). I doubt many got to the US until much later.

US CB was, surprisingly, in the US.

WS19 doesn't cover 27MHz as I recall.

So, basically, your idea seems "far fetched".

OTOH, it was quite common for Army Cadets to have 19 sets, even into the
1970s. Many amateurs were exposed to radio via the Cadets and some even got
permission to have 19 sets at home and use them for Cadet nets etc. Some
Cadet units were very "radio centred", sadly the one near me wasn't. They
had several tatty 19sets, none of which worked that well. I took my 19 set
in (it was "brand new") and I'm pretty sure it was the first time in years
they had a working set. You try pushing a bike with a 19 set strapped to the
cross bar- not exactly /M the easy way.

He probably meant 6.6MHz - you know, low HF for Amateurs with no morse

You think the morse was removed to get CBers off 11m? No - it was to get
them off 45m.

WRONG!

100% WRONG.

THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT TO OBTAIN AN M3 OR M6 LICENCE ON THE
''PASSING'' OF THE F/L ''EXAMINATION'' AND FARCE MORSE ASSESSMENT.

ONE CAN SIMPLY CONTINUE TO DO THE PRACTCALS (!!) AND SIT THE I/L EXAM.

ONE CAN THEN SIT THE ADVANCED EXAM.

ONE THEN APPLIES FOR AND MOST LIKELY OBTAINS A FULL LICENCE.

IN THIS WAY ONE AVOIDS BECOMING A USEFUL STATISTIC FOR THE RSGB.

IT CLEARLY SHOWS THE AMOUNT IS NON-UNDERSTANDING OF THE WHOLE
RE-JIGGED FARCE WHEN SOMEONE IMPLIES THAT ONE HAS TO BECOME AN M3/M6.

How another country conducts it's amateur radio licence exams is no
concern of yours.

In Bulgaria, they have a three tier system - and you MUST operate at
your passed level for a certain length of time before you can take the
next exam.

Britain didn't have the industrial capacity to produce the WS19, so it
gave the contract to Northern Telecom of Canada. In order to meet the
demand, they had to sub out the work to several US firms: Zenith, RCA
and Philco. About 2 million were made.

You don't need one to have a UK licence. A mailing address initially yes, a
residential one no.

You clearly missed the thread some months back when Paul was spouting about
addresses needed to get an EI licence. He went all quiet when he was shown
to be wrong. He does that a lot. Tells us what he thinks Comreg's rules are
and then blusters on when the truth is put to him.

Some countries do require some evidence of (at least temporary) residence
before they will issue a local licence (via a HAREC, their local exam, or
some other agreement). The UK don't, nor does the US or EI land.

One thing to watch if you plan to go don't the "reciprocal" route (not HAREC
route) is that some countries will only allow a reciprocal licence (or even
operating) on the basis of your country of citizenship. For example, if you
(as a UK citizen) hold US General (recognised by CEPT as at Intermediate
level), you could not use the latter in the CEPT countries which would
accept it under CEPT for Intermediate operating.

Likewise, a UK Full Reciprocal Licence may not be accepted for operating
under CEPT or HAREC rules.

If you've access to Bulgarian sample exams or related material, I'd be
interest in seeing it, please. Language isn't an issue, I know some who will
translate it for me.

I'll ask for that next time I speak to some of the Bulgarian guys.

I've spoke to the previously about licencing over there - I can take the
Bulgarian exam (which, I think, is only available in Bulgarian!) as I do
have a residential address there.

once I have a full licence, I can use it over there no problem - but I
must keep a log (unlike here now, where it's not a requirement).

The BFRA (LZ's equivalent of the RSGB) reckon that they will issue a
reciprocal licence for an FL - but the licence conditions must be given
to them in Bulgarian.

Seems odd, the T&Cs of your "home" licence are not really relevant to them,
especially as they will accept a UK Full, which has the same licence
conditions document (not in Bulgarian either).

As regards accepting the FL, that is up to them. The FL isn't covered by the
CEPT arrangements but that doesn't mean countries can't accept it if they
wish to. I think the secret is finding the correct person to ask in the
local licensing authority, which may well require a discussion in the
relevant language. I know of several cases where permission or a local
licence was issued on the basis of an FL or IL.

So it's fair to say then, that your previous comment telling Paul -

"How another country conducts it's amateur radio licence exams is no
concern of yours."

Was pointless and probably only made to be argumentative.

Your more recent comment:

"No, I don't actually. Do he have a residential address in the UK?"

Demonstrates you don't know what you are talking about - as Brian has
just shown.

Your asking - "Why's he hiding in paddyland?"
Is again just argumentative, since what he may or may not doing in his
country is sod-all to do with you.
