What did the Brown snakes do to deserve that? Didn't the other animals
suffer enough? :)

It's a shame he wasn't successful in scaling the outer enclosure to get to
"Terry", the 11ft (3.3m) saltwater crocodile.

Would have saved an awful lot of paperwork... No need for a funeral either,
therefore, making it win win...

I was trying to work out where his parents were, this seems to have
happened while the zoo was shut, so it seems a bit harsh to sue them
when they might not actually have taken him to the zoo in the first place.

Then one should ask, WTF, was a 7yo child doing out alone?

I know, but there are occasions where the little buggers climb out of
the window at 5am and disappear.

It's just that they're looking for someone to blame, and compensation
from suing someone. But a 7 year old is not legally responsible, so
unless they blame the parents they can't do anything.

It will be interesting to find out what really happened.

But if he climbed out the window and wandered off when they were asleep,
it's a bit different.

There have been occasions where my kids have wandered off, or headed off
to a friend's house, without telling me.

I don't for one moment think they would ever have done what this boy
did, but I still want to know what really happened.

I note with interest, in a poll of teachers, over 20% voted for the return
of corporal punishment, Sadly, it'll never happen. Anyway, no doubt the EU
would prevent it.

When / where was that poll tox?

Prior to going into teaching I used to think corporal punishment should be
allowed / used. Now, while I may agree it should be allowed, I don't think I
would use it.

About a year or so back, there was news story of some special "last hope"
school in the USA where the pupils had some sort of electric shock device
fitted. My form discussed this in a form period and thought it was a good
idea. Maybe because it was less "painful" than some more acceptable
punishments ;-)

Well, having been mistakenly caned at school due to the stupidity and
prejudice of a teacher as it happens, who was found out eventually, but
got off scot free anyway; if corporal punishment ever returns and a
teacher hits my children, or indeed grandchildren, I will claim
diminished responsibility when they find that same teacher lying
unconscious the next day...

Not that the experience has affected me in any way of course, but pay
back is pay back.

I'm afraid they'd find the teacher strapped to the device overnight, on
the maximum pain setting, if they used it on my children.

"Jails are full of innocent men" ;-)

I've a pupil who always claims "It wasn't me!", even when he was caught "red
handed". A quiet "Would you like to try that answer again?" usually results
in some prevarication, another "Would you like to try that answer again?"
usually gets the truth- accompanied by a very dejected look ;-)

Seriously, if you are still thinking of your "unjust" caning after all these
years, I suggest you get over it.

Well, if you've brought your children up correctly, chances are no teacher
would have cause to need such a thing.

Of course, that leaves the problem of the "others" who haven't been brought
up correctly and how understanding you are if your children's education
suffers as a result.

I wasn't advocating the idea, merely relating the reaction of a class to it.

Wlat beat me to that one. You seem to be against it because of one incident
that may have happened to you, so your answer is to do away with it
altogether just in case it happens again sometime in the future.. never mind
the little B's that now get away totally unpunished because of it. Never
mind the kids who started to go astray but were put back on the straight and
narrow because of a caning they deserved made them change direction.

Just before I left Kingstanding in Birmingham a gang of delightful little 10
yr olds took an old motor out of someone's drive, pushed it down the road
past my house and crashed it into a guys camper van 3 doors down. He came
out of the house and gave chase to one of them who got away and went and
told mummy. Instead of her cuffing him around the head and making him
apologise and offering to pay for any damage she stormed down the road and
attacked the guy with a screwdriver for upsetting her brat. As he held her
hands down to stop himself from being stabbed her live in lover came
swaggering down the road swearing his mouth off and ordering him to let go
of his old tart. The kid and his mates were laughing on the corner of the
road. It was the final straw that made me think of getting out of the rat
race.

How scumbags like this are allowed to breed and be mollycoddled by the
government with soft laws god only knows.

The elephant in the room here is the question of what other, more
successful, countries do. Do they use sign-language in Germany or
Japan, for example? Why are their youngsters better equipped on
leaving school? What lessons could the UK learn?

These are never addressed, AFAICS.

Beware of fugitives from the uk amateur radio group (these are some of them)
turning our amateur radio group into a useless general chat group with
constant off topics that have nothing to do with radio! Next, they'll be

Here in Aust., as we well know, the biggest problems seem to be a very small
minority of well established full calls and their atics on eg 80 metres.

It seems there is something in Australia which is causing the young

seeking to attract others to migrate to Australia.

Is it the snakes or the Ozzie men that is the problem? ;-)

ISTR that when my local state school were asked, by the local
authority in the 80s, there was around a 97% demand by parents and
teachers to bring back corporal punishent and school uniform. The
local authority decided on the opposite course as, in the words of one
council member I interviewed about the rejection of the referendum
result, " We know what is best for the children" ! They have lived to
regret it ...

Hang on a bit, a 20 year old goanna would be nigh on 6 feet long, how could
a 7 year old kill or even lift a reptile that big to "hurl it over the
fence"?

Either some ill informed or creative reporting or the kid had a lot of help.

For those who may not know our Aussie goanna is a highly mobile creature and
can run very fast and has a penchant for climbing trees. His claws are very
sharp and long and can defend themselves very well too.

Maybe it was a lizard!

The article does not say that he lifted the goanna over the fence. It
does say "Over the next half hour, he bludgeoned some of the animals
to death with stones and hurled others over the two fences surrounding
the crocodile enclosure." That suggests the goanna was bludgeoned.
That's something that should be tried on the kid.
