706 back in the car

Previously, I have used a boot mount with not much success. Now I am
looking at putting a ladder bar on the roof.
I was down at Nevada last week looking at options and there is something
in the shop that will let me put a mount on one, and my question is this.
At HF bonding to the car body is very important. What I am thinking of
doing is to bond to the car through the bolts that are used for the
interior grab handles just above the doors.
What size of copper braid would I need, assuming the Hustler was mounted
adjacent to the door? The length of braid would be about 12 inches, or
300 mm for the frog lovers :-)

get a car like a merc where the roof rails are earthed then you don't need
noisy cross bars .....or if the rails are not earthed as in my wagon r, take
off the plastic end caps and short earth strap the mount to the fixing
bolts.....simples ....I have never had much luck earthing just ladder
bars.....and I don't think a foot long earth strap is a good idea if you
want to avoid RF burns to your nose and lips ! .....and if you use a centre
loaded hustler with aluminimum fold over botton section it weighs a TONNE
.......good for static mobile though .......

Inch should do it. Make sure you scrape off all the paint to bare
metal fit a couple of grip washers and a locking nut then cover in
thick grease to stop vibration and corrosion. While you are at it add
another braid behind the interior trip down to the chassis ideally to
where the battery is bonded to prevent RF earth loops.
Oh and keep that CB set you got off 27.555 if you don't mind ;-)

Well Steve, when you live in a dealer free zone and you are visiting
your daughter who lives in Portsmouth, what other option do you have?

I am not thinking about earthing the ladder bars, just the antenna mount.

No, it's not a fold over one.
What I was thinking about was to put one ladder bar on the roof, at the
back and earth the aerial mount to the grab handle bolt, by passing the
braid past the door seal, to the grab handle bolt. It will be a rarely
used feature.

aircraft, thanks.

It's an Icom 706, unopened for broadband use.

I was speaking to an upcoming FL candidate at the Ayr Club on Wednesday
night - he had an aerial on his roof rack last I saw his car - but it's
now body mounted.
He told me that it just didn't work right that way.
I always body mount aerials myself, whereever possible. I've got a hatch
mount on my gf's Punto for 2/70, and a boot lip mount on my car because
I'm not drilling a hole for an aerial in a Lancer Evolution!

I bought a new Toyota Camry in 1995.
First thing I did to mount my mobile antennas was to drop a
Q-MAX cutter in the top of the rear wing.
I had more rust and paint damage from these gutter etc mounts on previous
cars.
The antenna base has been in over 14 years now.
No rust around it.
I did seal it all inside fully.
So I am happy how that has lasted
I could do with a new wing mount I do agree but cant find the original
type any where.
If any one is reading this . its the type that was SO239 socket with a
rubber domed spacer
with a long slot the width of the SO239 so the angle could be corrected.
Then a metal done over the lit.
Great piece of kit. I could use one if you have one in the junk box.
Or know of a source.
