Astronomer Martin Reese has been given a million quid for "making
exceptional contributions to affirming life's spiritual dimension".

This has totally confused the atheists. They're worried about what label to
attach to him, because his scientific record is excellent but he won't take
sides in the God wars they've artificially created.

And in the world of the atheist, everyone needs to be labelled. If you're
not for use, you're against us. Or, as Dawkins says, Reese is a Quisling.

Some examples of the total confusion Reese has caused among atheists are in
the comments to Pharyngula's article on the story:

"Meep, Meep! What a Looney Toon!"

"I mean, who the hell is Rees?"

The atheists who aren't confused are just bitter, angry and heaping insults
on him. Because nothing says "I'm in favour of rational debate" better than
saying the person you perceive as an opponent "sucks Christian ass".

"The money should mean he can afford some good-quality mouthwash; he'll need
it to get rid of the taste of Christian ass."

"The best thing that can be said about Martin Rees is that he is the
*former* president of the Royal Society" (says an atheist who doesn't appear
to have been president of the Royal Society).

http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2011/04/faitheist_wins_templeton_prize.php

Once again, atheists demonstrate their simple-mindedness, their need to have
everything in black and white, their pressing desire to make sure
everything's labelled and in its box.

And once they're done with the insults, the comments quickly descend into
the traditional atheist therapy session in which they "express themselves"
and recount the occasion when they "discovered" religion was a load of
bullshit, and describe the hurt they have suffered ever since.

Because in the end, it's all about atheists!

Another exceptional scientist who baffles the atheists limited
imagination because he shares the awe and wonder which Einstein referred

dumb materialists just don't get!

That doesn't take much, they were already confused. ;-)

That's a few reasons why they will heap abuse on him;

a) they really don't have time for anyone, even distinguished
scientists, who don't share their prejudices and

b) Jealousy, because he just scored over a million dollars!

c) no one gives a prize for atheism, because IT'S WORTHLESS! B^D

Yup, they will brand you a theist if you dare to criticise their
pathetic ideology, they are masters of ad hom and abuse in lieu of
rational argument.

They don't cope well with the real world, it is full of indeterminancy,
subtlety they can't grasp, nuanced ideas which they cannot comprehend..

there is no connection between atheism and science, or atheism

So what?
The pope lives like a multi-bilionaire.
That doesn't say anything about the validity of his beliefs or message.

Just another religious moron, grasping at straws.

I have noticed that. It is not 100% true, but in general it is.

(Some atheists have a lot in common with Jehovah's Witnesses....I just had
an image come to mind, Atheists going door to door -- in pairs with
pamphlets -- trying to convert believers.)

This has totally confused the atheists.

LOL. The slightly retarded Christopher Lee gets in a muddle.

Wot a cretin!

Christopher Lee covers his ears and starts pushing the button on the side of
his head. The usual nonsense emerges from his mouth, viz:

Once again Christopher Lee sticks his tongue out and wails "he started it"
like a poor weeping baby.

Baby Lee claps his hands to his ears again and yells to cover up reality.

The halfwitted child Christopher Lee proves my point by stamping his
childish feet and demanding that the world must UNDERSTAND HIM!

Why can't you morons even try and understand what an atheist is? Because
"you morons" don't give a fuck. "You morons" consider actions, not the
infantile labels Christopher attempts to put on people.

Why this deranged clot even thinks people care what an atheist is puzzling.

But despite mountains of evidence that nobody gives a shit what he is or
claims to be, he still demands that his label BE RESPECTED!

I AM AN ATHEIST, he declares, expecting a round of applause. The world yawns
and says "show us what you do, not what you claim to be. Then we might take
an interest, dimwit".

Start with your usual lie of assuming that everyone who doesn't agree with
you is a theist.

You've trotted out that particular lie so many times, you might as well add
it to your name: Christopher Lee You're A Theist.

Poor pathetic baby Lee snips what he can't handle, then shows he can't quite
believe that more than one person doesn't agree with him and regards him as
an uncivilised and dishonest fraud.

This fellow must be fasgnadh in disguise, he whines.

Everybody agrees with me except fasgnadh. Ergo fasgnadh must be trying to
wind me up with a new nym.

No, you're the one confusing the atheists. You're using
English words and English syntax, but somehow what you

See what I mean? You seem to be implying that before those
dastardly Dawkinites and their ilk showed up, Christianity
presided over two millennia of cooperation and religious
harmony, and never pressed for its own views to be placed
above those of other faiths, or no faiths.

In the real world, of course, far from being the artificial
creation of 21s-century atheists the "God wars" were
launched by Christians about 1600 years ago, and the only
reason the word "atheist" carries any significance is
because the religious have so long made such a big (read,
murderous) deal about the need to hold a certain set of
beliefs.

A person might also take from your words that you don't
understand one of the primary goals of the John Templeton
Foundation. The organization pumps a jillion dollars into
its long-term, high-stakes PR campaign to implant the into
people's minds the idea that science supports the
traditional ideas about spirituality. Of course, if science
actually had supported spiritual beliefs, there would be no
need for the foundation in the first place. But the
foundation's target audience tends to miss such subtleties.

So we're left the problem of your confused commentary. It
seems you want to take a peck at a couple of Internet
atheists for laughing at the Templeton foundation, but you
lack anything discerning or indeed comprehensible to say,
so you just whimper senselessly until you get bored with
your own remarks.

Under your definition of the term, you may well be right.

That sounds like an exaggeration.

As an intellectual position, it would surely "carry significance" if the
religious merely existed, occasionally publishing a pamphlet or two rather
than "making a murderous deal" about holding their beliefs.

So... If I understand the article correctly, a religious organization
is giving a "spritualist" a prize for bad science.

Why should I care about this again?

I'm grateful to the Templeton Foundation for sponsoring
lecture series where I could go here a range of attitudes,
from full-blown theist to unrelenting atheism, and points
between. Simon Conway Morris was particularly
outstanding.

However, I no more care about their prize than I do about
who the Church has cannonized this week.

Some scientists -- including some very fine scientists --
are believers. This is hardly a stop-the-presses
discovery.

All that said, I think they're throwing bad money
after bad in their endless, expensive quest to
show that science supports God, their flavor of.

No - I don't think Martin Rees had to do *any* bad science to get the
prize - just say nice stuff about religion.

It's a bloody good lurk - you generally don't get paid big bucks for
doing science.
Many people wouldn't take the money but ... Its a million dollars -
for saying something nice about the superstition industry.

Correction: it's a million pounds - thats about 1.6 million dollars.
http://www.templetonprize.org/currentwinner.html

It is intentionally set to exceed the Nobel prize.
Which is kinda perverse.
