Many more girls than boys do dancing and singing (for instance in choirs)
than boys.

I believe that an important part of all children's development must be the
use and appreciation of art of all forms, whether it is dance, music,
drawing, painting or whatever. It is an important element of their
well-being, just like it is that of adults.

I would like to see art appreciation nurtured more. If this was to happen
then I contend that this will reduce tension and unhappiness, and thus has
an important impact on such issues as crime reduction, as well as a host of
other things.

So let's get more boys interested in these things! They're cheap, fun, and
far better for the adults and kids than some other things they could be
doing in their spare time - like shopping or watching TV (or even, dare I
say it, participating in NG activities. Though that too is fun I admit!).

Well said! I believe some areas of London are now providing blank
walls for all the spray artists.
Its a great idea....All our family are well into art and the youngest
is now studying silver/gold smithing.odd for a girl one may think but
he loves it and has been offered an apprenticeship. she's only 13. Its
a branch of art I must admit I never thought about at all!
All the artists I know (many) are so altruistic, so generous and
considerate, understanding etc the world of art and music must have a
beneficient influence on allit touches.

Do they use a lot of these gender-bender chemicals? (-:

welsh witch,

Thank you,

<<I believe some areas of London are now providing blank

Interesting. Another interesting thing is if you see underpasses which have
been painted in an organised way, say by schoolchildren, they rarely get
defaced by the 'yobbo' graffiti types. It seems that such artwork attracts
respect and enjoyment by all people of all ages.

It would be wonderful to see Britain leading the way in the world and
bringing art and music, including performing arts, to all sorts of public
areas, like airports and railway stations. I believe this can and should be
encouraged by public and private enterprise. Businesses could really benefit
from sponsoring such activities and it would be a real boost to our tourism
industry and our cultural wellbeing.

One of our local 'problem' parks turned over a wall for the kids to come and
paint in an attempt at deterring the vandal-type graffiti as opposed to the
artistic-type graffiti.

Nice idea, but unfortunately if a lad in my area told his mates he was in a
choir or a dance troupe, he'd get called a poofter or something, and shunned
as a bit of a twerp. You've got to be a football fanatic or a yob I'm
afraid. My son has suffered the same sort of jibes just because he prefers
his computer and model-building to wandering aimlessly round the streets in
a Man U shirt.

In recognition of this real situation, I suggest that it is simply
worthwhile perservering and one day your son would gain enormously from such
interests.

Same situation. Strength of character can be built up through doing or
saying something different from 'the crowd'. I also accept that it can be
knocked down under certain circumstances.

But I maintain my point regarding the value of art throughout our society.

Put testosterone where it rightly belongs (such as with competitive and good
healthy sports (sorry, not boxing!) ) and let us additionally work on the
creative and innovative part of human nature, for both boys and girls, men
and women!

Great idea! And let's get girls more interested in Scalextrix and conker
fights. What fun!
