Surely it must be time for the USA to send in troops to remove the rogue
government of Israel and substitute a civilised and humane regime?

I suppose if Abu Hamza said that, it would be portrayed as support for
our country's enemies. But the government of Israel has again showed
itself to be both stupid (because its actions cannot possibly bring
about a peaceful resolution of the dispute) and barbaric (killing
unarmed civilians as a way of trying to regain control).

This piece is well worth a read, as an antidote to the misinformation
put out by the Israeli embassy and Melanie Phillips.

Quote

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/nov/18/we-in-gaza-right-to-defend?INTCMP=SRCH

The latest Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip has prompted several
European countries and the US to reaffirm their position of unwavering
support for the aggressor. William Hague, Britain's foreign secretary,
Cathy Ashton, the EU high representative for foreign affairs, and Barack
Obama, have all claimed that Hamas's rockets were responsible for the
crisis and that it is the right of Israel to defend its citizens. Had
they checked the facts, they would have realised Israel started the
attacks. The escalation started when an Israeli military incursion into
Gaza on 8 November killed a Palestinian child. That was followed by
other Israeli incursions and attacks, provoking a response by
Palestinian factions.

Despite that, there were serious efforts to calm the situation and reach
a truce. But clearly Israel had another agenda. By targeting Ahmed
al-Jabari, leader of the al-Qassam Brigade, it sabotaged Egyptian
efforts to conclude a truce between all Palestinian factions and the
Israelis. This was confirmed by Egypt's president on Saturday.

With the approach of the Israeli elections, the Israeli prime minister,
Binyamin Netanyahu, wanted to trade with the blood of the Palestinians,
especially after his alliance with the ultra-extremist Avigdor Lieberman
failed to boost his popularity in the polls as he'd expected. This is
not the first time the Israelis have launched a war for electoral gain.

snip

The human rights that Europe claims to defend all over the world are
denied to the Palestinian people. European governments have done nothing
while 1.7 million Gazans have been subjected for the past five years to
an Israeli blockade – denying them food, water, medicine and even
determining how many calories they should be allowed each day.

The right of people to resist occupation and confront aggression is
guaranteed to all peoples; but if Palestinians seek to exercise this
right it immediately becomes terrorism and for this they must be persecuted.

The Israeli military attacks on Gaza did not stop after the last Gaza
war. Since 2009, 271 Palestinians have been killed, compared to three
Israeli deaths. In the last few days more than 700 Palestinians have
been killed or injured – more than half of them women or children.
Yesterday 12 people from same family were massacred.

If the Hamas government in Ghaza stopped sending hundreds of rockets
into Israel, your post might then have some value.

Until then you sound like a blinkered Palestinian, bent on destroying
Israel.

It's more likely that the USA will invade Gaza to remove rockets and
other weaponry likely to be directed at Israel.

There is absolutely no excuse for Israel's indiscriminate attacks on
civilian populations. It's morally equivalent to attacking the Warsaw
Ghetto.

I look forward to the day when Iran announces that it has a full
complement of nuclear weapons. Then it will be able to impose some
discipline on the errant government of Israel.

Dream on. The democrats know perfectly well that Israel is in the wrong,
but they are searching for a diplomatic way of saying so.

Fired by the state of Israel: numerous.

The targeted killings (assassinations) didn't start with the military head of Hamas, it's been going on for months. A timeline of events proves just as in the 2008/2009 Israeli killfest the rockets are again a bogus excuse.

The attacks are becoming more and more accurately targeted against the
folk sending the missiles.

Indiscriminate doesn't seem to come into it. There are attacks that hit
military targets, there are attacks that hit military targets and cause
civilian collateral deaths/injuries, and there may be attacks that go
completely astray.

I haven't seen evidence that anybody is targeting civilian populations.

That's fair enough, yes. If Israel could confine its violence to the
terrorists in Gaza who fire the missiles, and not the Hamas civil
servants and police, still less the ordinary civilians, then Israel
could claim to be a civilised country rather than a barbarian country.

Those Statistics In Full

Israeli deaths : 3
Palestinian deaths: 95 (including a large number of children)

According to the IDF, the death toll in the coastal territory since the
operation began has reached 95 people, one-third of them uninvolved in
the conflict. [Source: Haaretz, in Israel]

My memory must be hazy, but I don't recall that the government of
Londonderry supported the IRA or said that the UK should be wiped from

Apart from that, the Israelis are clearly targeting the militants. I
agree that the collateral civilian deaths are frightful, but the
Palestinian militants are clearly targeting Israeli civilians.

Missiles fired at Gazan civilians by Israel: none.

For so many Israeli missiles to be launched yet so few civilian casualties,
suggests a very precise operation. Any moral regime would ensure that its
civilians are situated well away from military targets if there is a risk of
incoming fire, not hide weapons in houses and fire rockets from hospitals.
Or maybe not fire them at Israel and invite retaliation in the first place.

I'll ask again, how many missiles have been fired from Gaza at Israel?

If a large body of refugees were displaced by fighting in Europe, surely
they would have been resettled within a year or two? Not still be living
in refugee camps over 60 years later.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the Israeli War of Independence,
the surrounding Arab countries could easily have absorbed the resulting
refugees. If you want an outlet for your outrage about all this, I
suggest that you look at the people who heartlessly chose to keep the
refugees cooped up in refugee camps for the last 60 years, purely for
political reasons.

The Al-Qassam Brigade is the military wing of Hamas. It is largely
responsible for firing the missiles, and it apparently has 15,000 troops
(or whatever you want to call them).

Israel is most definitely NOT in the wrong. Hamas is. Hamas has been
directing rockets willy nilly at Israel ever since the last war.
Deliberate provocation, and also aimed at Israeli civilians including
children. Hamas "always" hides it's rockets and launchers and
ammunition behind the civilian houses, deliberately. Hamas are, after
all, merely terrorists. The inhabitants of Gaza have brought this all
down upon themselves. They voted for a terrorist government after all.
One reaps what one sows. The Israeli's have every right to protect
their citizens from unwarranted attack from Gaza, which is what has
happened. All your pseudo trendy lefty, super PC and liberal
protestations are ill-informed and inaccurate. Like the BBC, you are
highly biased and full of your own self importance and supercilious

They already seem to have fooled many people who are usually pretty
rational.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Jews are right when they complain about being
persecuted. The recent bout of anti-Israel sentiment seems to owe more to
their latent anti-Semitism than to their knowledge of the facts. Even the
BBC are now forced to report that the two sides are "firing missiles at each
other", even if they don't want to tell us what sparked off this latest
spat.

Excellently put.

The people of Israel face (and have historically faced) a far worse threat
of bombings, invasions and missiles than they pose to their "enemies".

It just so happens that they can afford to defend themselves and retaliate
in a bigger, better and far more efficient way. Good luck to them, and tough
shit on Hamas. They're obviously hoping for one of their fellow Arab nations
to jump in but they don't seem to want to.

And that load of bollox is not biased?

Just imagine if Hamas was sponging the billions of dollars per year in military aid (as well as the non-military loans which are never paid back) that Israel gets.

Then we would see a fair battle, and the bullies in Tel Aviv would soon be exposed as the cowards all bullies are secretly hiding.

It's quite a lot.

I believe the UN is Gaza's biggest employer. Then there are all the
grants from the EU, and the military assistance from neighbouring states.

Of course, the charity is part of their problem. If they would only

It has an elected government which is bent on sending missiles into Israel.

It really is immaterial whether Gaza has an army, navy or air force!!
If they didn't have missiles, life in Gaza would now be much easier.

Clearly, you cannot discern between sending rockets indiscriminately
into populated areas, or attacks on military areas occupied by cowards
surrounding themselves with civilians. Perhaps its purpose is so that
myopic criticism can be levelled at Israel?

I think they may have stopped at just three civilians, so it probably
wouldn't be accurate.

However, it is hypocritical for Israel to complain that its civilians
are being killed by terrorist rockets, and to fire rockets or artillery
back at Gaza in revenge. They evidently don't value civilian life on
either side.

What sparked off this latest spat was an Israeli military raid on 8th
November that killed a 13 year old boy, then Israel's assassination of
Ahmed al-Jabari. That was perhaps the equivalent of assassinating Gerry
Adams and hoping that the IRA would be so demoralised that they would
disband.

Yes, you are right - the media needs to remind people that Israel
provoked the latest "spat" or to be more accurate the latest "massacre".

No, they can afford to kill civilians but the risk of Hamas rockets is
undiminished. Oddly enough, if you kill children that doesn't actually
cause the terrorists to put down their weapons and go away - odd that
the Israelis still haven't learned that lesson. They are just adding to
their problems by helping the terrorists to recruit more members, and
making the Israeli people less secure than ever.

The Israeli government believes that only by inflicting death and injury
on the people of Gaza will they deter further rocket attacks. They
cannot be in the least surprised if Hamas apply the same logic and
decide to kill as many Israelis as possible to deter further attacks on
the citizens of Gaza.

Why do there have to be more? Because the IDF are determined to pursue
an illusory victory which will never come.

It goes much further than that. Israel is effectively in control over
Gaza. Gaza has no defence forces of its own and is a huge concentration
camp of people who live in poverty and unemployment but are not able to
leave because Israel controls the borders. When fishing boats depart
from the ports of Gaza the boats are often attacked and sunk by Israeli
forces as a way of humiliating the fishermen and keeping them in poverty.

The blockade is disgraceful and has been condemned by human rights
organisations and by several UN agencies, but Israel prefers to maintain
the status quo, knowing full well that it will forever be a source of
resentment, resistance and of course terrorism.

You don't need to go back in history. Here's some present day for ya. It
doesn't matter to you but I assure you it matters to them.

http://electronicintifada.net/content/gaza-blockade-keeps-saleh-away-sea/10170

For five years now, Saleh has only been able to sail for short
distances. Most of the time, it sits idle in a parking lot for boats
near a sea port to the west of Gaza City.

Saleh is the name of a large boat that belongs to Abu Ayman Kabaja, a
56-year-old fisherman and father of five children, all of whom have
worked in Gaza’s fishing industry for many years.

Before Israel imposed its blockade, Saleh and hundreds of other fishing
boats used to sail approximately 12 nautical miles off Gaza shores. Yet
for the past four years such boats have been allowed to sail only a
small distance offshore.

Under the Oslo accords, the US-sponsored peace process between Israel
and the Palestine Liberation Organization in the mid-1990s, fishermen in
Gaza were allotted access up to twenty nautical miles offshore. When
Israel imposed the 2007 blockade, this access area was shrunk to just
six nautical miles, and within the last year, Israel once again cut the
distance to three nautical miles.

Saleh is one of about 25 similar boats in the area that used to sail
from Gaza before Israel imposed the maritime blockade. These boats are
all out of regular use as a result of the siege on Gaza.

By that same token, why not tell the Arabs to clear off? They have
more space to start with (the whole ME minus Israel which is less the
size of Wales in fact!) without needing to send them to the moon! So
it would be more cost-effective! ;-)

Hamas seems to want to be in power and be terrorists. The British
Government would not have stood that from the Provos so it should not
be too surprising that the Israelis don't either. Mind you, the
British did not send war-planes over West Belfast!!!
