Lois Finderup surrounds herself in beauty.
For the better part of three decades the New Plymouth woman has been cultivating elegance and poise amongst the region's young women.
As the boss of a beauty school and organiser of Miss Taranaki and the Taranaki Daily News Fashion Art Awards Mrs Finderup sees beauty everywhere.
"I'm always looking but I don't approach people, well very rarely," she says sitting under an umbrella by the pool at her New Plymouth home.
"The area itself doesn't offer enough work for me to go out and say to people `You should do this, you should be a model' because there isn't enough work for them here."
A bejewelled and graceful Mrs Finderup is every bit the beauty queen herself. At her feet sits Nisha, a refined siamese cat. On her lap is Gizmo, a friendly chihuahua with wide-set eyes, the sort of dog you expect to see poking out of the high-end handbags of high-end models.
"The kids think he is absolutely ugly but I think he is gorgeous," she says throwing an adoring smile his way.
It is the ability to see inner beauty that has kept Mrs Finderup in a game which in recent years has come in for a fair whack of criticism as exploitative of young women. But these criticisms are receding, she says.
"There is a resurgence the opposite way now and I am pleased to be able to say that. Some of these girls get up in front of 1000 people or more and have to give a speech about their sponsors. It shows they have a depth of character and gives them so much confidence," she says.
"Our biggest problem, for some reason, is that older girls have less confidence than the 10-18 year olds. That's why we have 18 in that category for Miss Taranaki and nine in the older category."
The slowly increasing popularity comes at a time when Mrs Finderup could be thinking about retirement, just as her husband, Daryl, has gone and made up his mind on the subject.
But don't expect it to happen any time soon.
"I think about it every now and then but I get a kick out of mixing with these young people.
"As an older person I think mixing with young people keeps us young."
