According to the latest Rough Guide edition:

England is a nation of "overweight, alcopop-swilling, sex- and
celebrity-obsessed TV addicts".

Sounds pretty accurate to me, although there might be a couple of other
suitable, equally complimentary descriptives that could be added ;-)

Plebvision is a bit of a blight, before then there were more
interesting things to do, whist, billiards, hunting, needlepoint,
painting, and other indoor sports:
