First of all, my name is Rolanda Laurent, I am Indonesian living in
the UK; but back in Indonesia I have a younger sister who has been
diagnosed with epilepsy and been living on drugs for the last 5 years.
The symptoms she has are a bit strange. Any person who has epilepsy
can live their life normally as far as I know from what I read. My
sisters condition is not allowing her to do anything on her own most
of the time. She mostly seems to live in a world of her own and
doesnt respond as a normal person with a vacant look in her eyes. Her
responses to speech are delayed by 10-20 seconds if she responds at
all; not only in speech, in action as well. She has small seizures
(no foam coming out from her mouth) constantly on a daily basis. Its
like when you jumped a bit because something surprised you. She also
has big seizures, which I know is probably a normal seizure for
epileptic people. For this, at one point I asked her what did she feel
when she has the seizure; she couldnt explain, she told me that she
saw like a rainbow light colors just before it happened, felt a bit
ache all over her body and then she didnt know the rest.

We have tried different treatments, acupuncture, drugs, different
doctors, but so far no significant result. My father has recently been
advised to have her operated on. There was this new doctor hes seeing
who is a surgeon. They have done another MRI scan a few days ago. We
are living an adequate life but the surgery cost a lot of money. And I
am concerned about the operation I have no knowledge at all about
this. And my country is not known for the best treatment in health
issues.

I want to know what exactly my sisters illness is. Some people dont
agree that she has epilepsy based on the symptoms. And what can be
done to treat it?

Please could you advise?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you very much.

Rolanda,

Sometimes, surgery is required to remove an area of brain which is
stimulating uncontrolled seizures, and this does require a skilled and
well-equipped surgeon.

I don't know where you live in Indonesia (which is a big country), but
I know an excellent doctor whom you might consult for an additional
opinion. His name is Dr. Gunawan Budiarto, and he practices in
Surabaya.

Please let me know if you contact Dr. Budiarto, and give him my best
wishes.

Best,

Bob

Thanks for the info. Do you have any contact details for him?

We live in Jakarta, the capital, which is 1,000 miles from Surabaya.
Do you know anyone in Jakarta?

Does the description I gave sound like epilepsy to you?

Thanks again.

I have an e-mail address for Dr. Budiarto. It is:

<guna...@rad.net.id>

The address is a few years old, so I hope that it is still valid. I
don't know anyone in Jakarta.

Yes, the description sounds like a type of epilepsy.

Good luck,
