Don't be afraid to take more than one med. A lot of them work better when
combined than when used individually. Personally, I took tegretol and
dilantin for about ten years and have had tegretol and epilim for about 19
years since then...with a few others in between, to test their
effectiveness. Incidentally, I've never had any side effects from any of
them, except topamax, which made me feel ill.
Cheers.
Darryl.

| No.... it's not really that.... it's just that for the
past
| 11 years (since I had brain tumor removed) I've only been on ONE
medication
| at a time to control seizures.... first, Dilantin, then Tegretol, then
| Depakote.... now back to Tegretol.... but this time will Keppra be added
| (because I still seem to be seeing flashing lights occasionally &
| experiencing 'tastes' in my mouth & the occasional muscle twitch).
| So it will be my first time taking two medications
| concurrently & I'm slightly bothered because Tegretol seemed to 'cover all
| the bases' when I took it several years back.... that bothers me, but
I've
| been told that over time things change & just because a certain medication
| once totally controlled seizures doesn't mean it will always have the same
| effect & thus another drug, such as Keppra needs to be added.
| Do you think it's a good idea for my Dr. to prescribe TWO
| drugs when there is possibly a SINGLE drug that will take care of
| everything? Rather than switching me around to find a single drug that
| might work it seems my Dr.'s want to just go ahead & put me on two.
| I dunno.... it's a new thing for me.... I appreciate your
| advice & will keep you all advised on how things go :-)

Definately do Not be afriad to take both Tegretol (carbemazepine) and Keppra
at the same time. Although they are both primary anticonvulsant medications,
they target different types of seziure patterns. I personnaly am taking Both
and have had excellent results without adverse affects. Concerning the
Tegretol, you may want to ask you neurologist if he would consider switching
it to another type of carbemazepine called Carbatrol. Carbatrol has less
unnoticable adverse affects that Tegretol.

Hope this helps

I'm on both and they are working fantastic together

Depakote was giving me liver troubles my others docs suspected

Its considered a good add-on medication - unfortunately my doctor and
pharmacists didnt have many patients on it though

good luck

Hi

I've been through a few meds. Epilim was the most successful for me, but
had to come off it. To cut a long story sideways, also been on Tegretol,
Lamictal, Frisium and Topamax, (not necessarily in that order...terrible
memory!). Some in partnership with others, at one point, there was a trio.

I am now on Topamax, the lowest dosage yet for me, and on it's own. Seem to
be doing ok, one seizure every 6 months or so, which is much better than 1
every 4 weeks I WAS having.

The worst side effects I had was when I was on Tegretol. It wouldn't let me
do any sport..... whether in the gym, or playing a court/field type sport.
It was obviously the Tegretol, as soon as I started that med, I had the
problem, and as soon as I came off it, it stopped. The docs didn't know
anyone else with this side effect, and I was taking it with another at the
time....I believe it was Lamictal (sorry....can't be sure.....memory like a
sieve....another side effect probably.....plus so many bangs on the head!)

I was doing ok when on Topomax and Lamictal, but needed to reduce my meds
for other reasons. Don't be afraid to take 2 at the same time, plenty of
people do. You never know, after a year or 2 of being settled on the
correct dosage of the 2, you MAY be able to be weaned off one..... but
that's a big 'maybe'. It worked for me (so far), but not necessarily
others.

Good luck

Karen

hi Karen,

between the hunger, dizzyness and now difficulty falling asleep so im
taking Ativan
to hold me over.

my neuro was baffled with this and my psych suggested the ativan which
is working out......also he thinks it might linger for about 6
weeks.....so i got a few more weeks to endure.....

Another thing with Keppra im noticing is I cant miss a dose (happened
once)
And I have to be consistent with my dosages - almost like my mind/body
is waiting for it.....
