Well...
If you come across any Web Page that uses a JScript like that,
to hijack the "onmousemove" Browser Event to do things like that,
you can always turn it off by Bunging this single Line into your
AddressBar & Clicking [Go]
:-)

javascript:void(document.onmousemove=null);

ROFL!!!
Yep I s'pose *someone* had to come up with the idea of feeding
a random String into the URL of those kind of Sites, such as
tinyurl.com
&
makeashorterlink.com
Etc.

I also found a similar one at:
http://www.mcgees.org/archive/2003_08_01_index.shtml
http://www.mcgees.org/cgi-bin/randomtinyurl.cgi

Haven't these people got anything better to do than to write Scripts
to play around with things like that?
:-)

This Page explains it a bit...
http://www.mcgees.org/archive/2003_08_01_index.shtml

> It's a kind of bookmarklet written by the person at tristimulus.

I gather various people have come up with things like that?
They aren't actually "Bookmarklets" - A Bookmarklet is a JScript thingy,
that runs as a Script directly in *your* Browser.
But those ones are Scripts Running on a Remote Server.
So you can call them up directly or from a Bookmark/Favorite Shortcut.

Though, having said that, there are now some *really* neat & clever
Bookmarklets around that you Run initially from a Script in your own
Browser, they then load up a further JScript from a Remote Server (which
also Runs in your Browser) & then that Script can do virtually whatever
you want...
& it can call up Remote Server-Side Scripts as well.

>... I pinched from a mac newsgroup.
> You're familiar with Tiny url? Makes a long url into a short one,

Yep & that Page (above) explains the difference between the 2 sites.
& there are also other similar sites that will make s shorter link from
a long URL.

> Only this little bookmarklet automates it.

I'm sure that it *could* actually be done using a Browser-Based
Bookmarklet, cos JScript has plenty of String & Array handling &
Math.Random Functions etc, built in.

Yep I know Tiny URL, but I prefer make a shorter link 'cos you get to know
where you are going.

: Well it's a game. Type www.tinyurl.com/arandomsetofcharacters into the

I've seen the game played on other newsgroups, but I thought the idea was to
get the letters to be appropriate to the web page. Like tinyurl.com/bark
would give you a page about dogs.

Yes, so you said!!!
:-)
But I guessed that Sandra (or possibly some other people reading
the thread?) might be interested in how things like that work?
:-)
Cos she did ask about it.

What - you mean like this?...
Try this URL...
http://p-m-j.net/bark

That gives a page with a load of stuff about dogs!!!
:-)

& this...
http://p-m-j.net/troy

That gives a page with stuff about one dog in particular!!!
:-)

Those are done with just one line in the .htaccess File on the
Web Server - not even any Script!!!
:-)

For more info about the sort of things you can do like that,
have a look at...
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_alias.html
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html

& if you want to do some PHP Scripting, then it all gets to be quite
a lot of fun!
:-)

Is that *a lot of fun* as in *reading RFC's is fun* ????? :-) If not I'll
maybe add it to my list, after I get C******s and my new mail addies out if
the way 'cos I'll soon be unreachable if I don't get a move on :-(

LOL!

Yes!
I was just playing around to see what can be done with the .htaccess
File on a Web Server.

> The url I posted is contrived to give random results, some of which
> will be 404 not found for obvious reasons.

Yep - the way tinyurl.com works (& how the URL is specified) is
slightly different from the way that makeashorterlink.com does it.
As those people who have written the various Scripts have shown,
it's just a matter of writing the write Script to generate the Random
Characters & construct a URL of the right form.
