Is netgoth gone for good? I thought it was going to be down just for a few
days but it's been weeks now. Any news, please?

It is indeed becoming rather annoying that it still hasn't been sorted
out.

Now the web is being inundated with second rate versions popping up
everywhere.

I spoke to Sam (netgoth system administrator) on Saturday at Infest. I
wasn't in a particularly lucid state, but my recollection is that he
said he'd attempt to get it up running again this week.

The reason it's taking so long really comes down to time and logistics.
(For anyone who's interested -- the server has a disk error and needs a
manual fsck. Unfortunately Sam's been unable to log in remotely as root
so needs to travel 150-odd miles to get to the machine. Then he has to
fit a new CD-ROM drive, boot from CD and migrate all the data off. Up
until now Sam has been too ill.)

If your central information point disappears and there is no immediate
backup then you have nothing. In that case, any "version" that
attempts to fill the interim gap is better than nothing, surely?

It's a bit like a guy dying of thirst in the desert finding a bottle
labelled "Tap water" and saying "I'm not drinking that. It's not
Evian!"

I do sometimes think that a lot of the goth club websites could do
themselves a lot better. A fair number of the ones that I've seen over
the past few months are a nightmare to navigate, sometimes with you
having to go to two or three separate different webpages to find out
places/dates/times/prices/music policy. Once you "know" the website
then it gets easier but for first time visitors it can be a nightmare.

Another thing that I have noticed is that there are a lot of goth club
list websites/webpages that don't seem to have been updated in the
last couple of years. So, you get to the page, see that Club XYZ is
happening in your area and follow the link to the club's website only
to find out that that night finished a year or two ago. It is a
problem inherent with the web of course, but it doesn't help that
people don't take time to try and reduce the clutter I think.

This is part of the "welcome" that Ghostly Voices has had in venues.
It is easy to pick up (you don't need a computer) and it's likely to
have valid relevent info (as it is printed on a monthly basis... just
not the last two months! Oops!). People "appreciate" not having to dig
through mountains of clicks to get to the information, especially if
it's for something that they don't now whether they'd like or be able
to get to.

So I'd say (I would, wouldn't I?) that ANY source of info in a
situation where there is no commonly accepted central diary has got to
be better than nothing. I take my hat off to anyone who tries,
although I could sometimes throw that hat at some people for not
trying hard enough.

it's just symptomatic of me losing my net connection semi-permanently.
without me there's just no point in the internet itself continuing to exist.

I actually had a go at writing a "Temporary Goth Events Listing" site
last weekend: <http://events.ogive.org/>. It allows events to be
added/edited/duplicated, and the listing can highlight and filter by
location. It doesn't have the map or any of the other interesting
features people are used to on netgoth. (Oh, and it sometimes looks a
bit funny in Internet Explorer 6.)

There's obviously a certain amount of duplication between it and
Steve/Barbedwirekiss' events site and others. I figure people will make
use of it if they like it, and if they don't, it's not a problem. I
don't think any of these sites are trying to compete with netgoth.org.uk
in its absense; as long as the information's correct, all such websites
are united in the common aim of greasing the axel of the goth machine.

Looks good, thanks - very easy to read and to submit/edit events.

If Netgoth isn't going to come back (as I think many now believe is the
case), could I suggest adding a user/password system for "trusted" promoters
(to stop random people spamming it with non-goth events, or irrelevant
rubbish)? That would save having to moderate events individually, which is a
pain for the moderators and a delay for the promoters.

Thanks!

I personally believe netgoth *will* come back, so it's a bit academic.
But if I were to add a proper login system (to keep most of the metal
nights out!) then I agree, a way of whitelisting event submitters
against certain events for automatic approval would streamline the
process.

Cheers,
