David Newsome, MA, LittD, FRSL, historian and Master of Wellington
College, 1980-89, died 28 April,2004, aged 74.

He was born 15 June, 1929, son of Capt. C.T. Newsome, OBE, & was
educated at Rossall, & Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

Career: Assistant Master, Wellington College, 1954-59 (Head of the
History Department 1956-59); Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge,
1959-70; Assistant Lecturer in Ecclesiastical History, University of
Cambridge, 1961-66; University Lecturer, 1966-70; Senior Tutor,
Emmanuel College, Cambridge, 1965-70; Headmaster of Christ's Hospital,
1970-79; &c.

His publications include: *A History of Wellington College 1959-1959*
(1959); *Godliness and Good Learning, Four Studies in a Victorian
Ideal* (1961); *The Parting of Friends: A Study of the Wilberforces
and Henry Manning* (1966); *Bishop Westcott and the Platonic
Tradition* (1969); *Two Classes of Men: Platonism and English Romantic
Thought* (1974); *On The Edge of Paradise: A.C. Benson the Diarist*
(1970)(Whitbread Book of the Year Award); &c.

Newsome married in in 1955, Joan Florence, daughter of
Lieutenant-Colonel L.H. Trist, DSO, MC, by whom he had four daughters.
Mrs Newsome died in 1999.
