Christmas turkey from Waitrose or Tesco's ?

When we buy chicken in Waitrose we often pay a little more than we would for
the same weight in Tescos, but the meat seems more firm and dense; as it the
bird had more of a 'free range ' life.

Usually we buy our christmas turkey from Tesco's because they are usually
the cheapest. If we were to buy a turkey from Waitrose we would expect to
pay more, but would it likely be any different quality to the Tescos birds?

As we have been told that turkey farms are fewer than chicken farms and
probably the turkeys all come from the same farms to supply the different
supermarkets.

If anyone knows if the Waitrose turkeys would be likely to be a different
quality to the Tescos, we would like to learn about it. Thanks for any
advice.

There was an article on the Martin Lewis money saving expert site about how
goods are distributed and "who makes which brand" etc. The more upmarket
shops get the first pick which is why you pay slightly more. At the lower
end of
choice is shops like Tesco who buy in such bulk they don't care much about
the
quality. For example, when biscuits are made, M&S get the best ones from
the
middle of a batch and shops down the scale get the rest.
I would go for the one at Waitrose. Is it worth saving a few pence for a
poorer
quality bird? I'm vegetarian so don't need to be worried, but can
appreciate
what you mean. You only get what you pay for.

I'm in upstate NY (USA) so I have no idea, but is it impossible for you to
order a fresh bird from a poultry farm? The closest one to me is 10 miles
away, and they have turkeys, chickens, ducks, game hens, geese, and this
year they're offering pheasants and tur-duc-hens! We do a large dinner on
Christmas Day and a party on Christmas Eve, so this year we're getting a
tur-duc-hen for the party and a goose for the dinner. If you have to go to a
market, I'd suggest the more upscale, since, at least around here, the
"boutique" market gets the pick of the best stuff while Wal-Mart takes
anything it can get as long as it's the cheapest.
