Not that much selling experience, so something like this was bound to
pop up.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/271185829136

Postage stated as to UK, and that the 10 P&P indicated was an estimate.

I was only able to see that the winning bidder resided on Jersey after
the item ended, and after he had paid via Paypal. After checking out the
postage options and cost, I asked the buyer for an additional postage
payment to cover the extra expense (and offered a full refund if he
wasn't willing to pay more for shipment to Jersey), which resulted in
the following answer:

"Hi James I don,t want a refund other wise I would not have. Been the
only person to bid on this item you can send the item and I will refund
your extra post charges bet Jersey C I are part of the UK don,t be
fooled into paying extra if you put it through pay pal that's OK"

Obviously this guy is well aware that the Channel Islands technically
are part of the UK, despite the additional cost to ship things there. He
did not inform me that he lived on Jersey neither before bidding nor
before paying.

I'm inclined to insist on getting the additional postage costs before
posting the item. The "don,t be fooled into paying extra if you put
it through pay pal" could suggest he is inviting to "complete (part of)
the transaction outside of eBay" - which is against eBay policy.

Of course he was fully aware of the costs of shipping to Jersey, he's a
cunt. Most people in Jersey are cunts (sorry Nick, not you if you still read
this group), always asking for VAT to be removed from prices after buying
and suchlike. I now block Channel Islands, it makes lfe much simpler.

Send it with Collect+ for a fiver and pocket the profit.

Most carriers charge extra for crossing water, and for the Scottish
Highlands. Many eBay sellers state this, I'm surprised you haven't
seen it. As you didn't state that in the listing I think the fair
thing to do is charge what you said it would cost, and consider it a
valuable lesson.

Perhaps you need a geography lesson and learn what is UK and what is
not. You said UK, he is in the UK. Granted the bloke cant write English,
but he does seem prepared to pay the extra.

That's my impression as well. Not asking tells it all.

That shall be my pleasure as well, in future listings.

Many thanks for that tip :-)

That was my intention as well, with the "estimate" bit.

Oh yes, I, as most other eBay users, have seen it. Also those living
overseas and in the highlands. IWHT they would have the courtesy to ask
me if I could specify the exact P&P charge if they were to bid for my
items.

Well, I wrote that the specified amount was an estimate. Subsequently,
when I got to know that the guy who won the autction lives on Jersey, I
told him what it would cost.

Oh yes, please. At some stage I got confused about what Crown
Dependencies were. It looks like those contributing to Wikipadia are
equally confused, since they state that Guernsey and Jersey are not part
of the UK.

He should be able to afford that, considering what he saves on VAT.

Ah, so you did - I should pay more attention.

That seems reasonable in the light of the above, although perhaps could
have been more strongly worded, e.g. "Postage is an estimate, actual
cost to be determined once I have the winning bidder's address" or
something like that.

This is Ebay where 'estimate' means guarantee to most buyers though.

Jersey is not in the UK! It is a separate Crown Dependency and anyone
from Jersey should be well aware of that. He is quite wrong to suggest
otherwise. I would suggest you politely remind him of this and that he
will need to pay the appropriate fees or that you will refund him.

Exactly so. Anyone who lives in the outlying areas knows of the extra
cost of coverage and should expect to pay it. Sometimes though, it's
not extra, but that's a bonus for the buyer.

Here's a valuable lesson for you - you're a cunt.

It seems knowledge of geography doesn't necessarily take you far when it
comes to eBay. I asked them if they consider the Channel Islands part of
the UK, and they said yes. Obviously since it benefits them,
business-wise.

You only just figured that out? I'm such a cunt that I'm not going to
suggest that you read a whole thread before responding to a post. Ha!

It's complicated. The Channel Islands are the same price to post to with
Royal Mail as the UK mainland, so they're part of the UK postal area in that
sense. The UK represent them at the Universal Postal Union, and there's no
doubt a pile of treaties setting down the postal relationship between the
two.

But couriers aren't part of this, and can and will charge extra. Which is
probably all you care about.

Put the normal amount of postage on it, and let him pay the rest plus
the RM handling fee they will demand?

And risk a negative, great idea.

Excactly.

============

Got fed up with this guy, and returned what he had paid me. I also had
to ask him to agree to cancel the transaction (automatic
system-generated query). To my surprise he agreed. But not long after he
sent me another message stating that he still wanted the item:

"I want what I,ve paid for what is wrong with you all you had to do was
give your e mail and I could have sent the money with pay pal you can
still do this or "

And subsequently:

"Hi James hope to catch up with you soon"

There should be a cunt-o-meter on eBay (parallelling the feedback
rating), raising alerts about individuals who are likely to continue
behaving like that.

===========
PS. Amusingly, when I consulted the eBay Customer Support team, if they
would back me up when cancelling the transaction, their staff replied in
HTML. So I had to go through their previous reply manually, and delete
all the HTML stuff in order to keep them updated. There are strange
people everywhere.

I will also block him now.
