Only cost three quid including p&p, but there are loads of them on ebay.
Will ebay be interested in this con?
Honest answer? No, Ebay wont even take notice. The only thing you can do is
request a replacement/complain to the seller. Or leave negative feedback if
they refuse.
I left positive because it turned up and seemed to work. Can I change that?
No , but you can leave a follow up to your feedback.
Whether anyone will read it though is anyones guess......

I paid £3.19 inc p&p from HK, and I'm not fussed about the loss. However
there are loads of them on ebay. It's an out and out con. They should be
added to a list of known dodgy goods to stop other people getting ripped
off. I'm not thinking 'me, me, me'.

For purely selfish motives then likely not. If I felt I had bought an item
that had been misrepresented then I would contact the seller and request
they modified the listing to prevent future customers being misled. If they
refused then I would annotate the feedback already left in the hope of
warning them.

It switches on and off when I plug it in, but it's a sealed unit so no
battery changes possible. It clearly stated that it runs off the usb
with an 8000+hours life. It's total bllx and I will be cracking it open
in a few hours (when it's finally run out).
Pretty peeved, because I spend too much time on my laptop in bed at night.
I've written to the seller and await a response.
I'm glad that I left it running for a day and a half and learnt the
truth and saved one person from the con. Especially as it's you VJ ;)
Aldi's had some today.

When you're working late at night, there's no need to strain your
eyes. This purpose-designed, bendy light will illuminate your laptop
brilliantly. It has no switch - you simply plug it into your USB
port (compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0). Strong, flexible 45cm cable.
Lasts approx: 8000 hours. Colours: black, silver.
Aww shucks :-)
I think I'll just stick with the bedside lamp, even though it makes my eyes
aches after a while. Does it say anywhere that it should not be run for
more than *? hours? I'll go look....

Bargain :-) But if they don't really work for that long? Tell you what,

I can't find any BAD reviews on it at all. I wonder if your laptop doesn't

Mine (well, his but sort of mine) gets all hot and bothered after a few
hours and sometimes the USB mouse activity gets a bit poor.
Just a thought :-)

I've got four different USB ports. :)
The light is still on. Just. I'm running it out. Then I'll open it up. I
think it's just this one that is a con, some of the others are fine I
reckon.
Just avoid these ones ..

Spot on, thanks. I feel a complete muppet.
You know what. Forget everything I've said. Remember this, I'm an idiot.
Someone hit the nail on the head. I feel a bit of a plonker, but it seems
that USB goes into 'low power mode' when nothing goes through. I just
thought it must be low batteries, hence the con thought. I've swapped my
external mouse over with the light, and it's back on at full power.
Doh.
um, um, what does it look like in the dark? :-)
--
Vj
The power save of the laptop seems to be the answer. I muppeted up.
Anyway, it looks good at night, but I may stick a cover to stop the glare
into my eyes from the light itself. Would have been better if they'd made
the lens rectangular.
Anyway, all's better now, and I've written to the seller explaining my
mistake.
Woops.
I started that thought off :-)

Thanks for the offer, but I'm as inept with soldering irons as I am with usb
thingies and computers.
;)
Speaking of laptops and power... one thing that, as someone who works in the
business as it were, I always see is people who leave their laptops plugged
into the power source continuously.
This always, without fail, knackers the battery so it won't stand to be away
from the power source for more than a few minutes.

Sue
Absolutely, I take mine to the local coffee shop when I get too housebound.
Firstly it gets me out of the house, secondly it gives the impression I know
what I'm doing.
A little bit of a google thanks to the help here provided this ...
Click on "Start" and then right-click on "My Computer."
Click on "Properties" and then on the "Hardware" tab.
Half-way down on the right, click on "Device Manager."
Click the "plus" sign in front of "Universal Serial Bus Controllers."
Double-Click on the first "USB Root Hub" (not USB 2.0 Root Hub).
Click on the "Power Management" tab.
Uncheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to
save power."
Click "OK" and repeat for all other "USB Root Hubs."
Finally, close all and go back to the desktop.
I have to have mine (well, his, but sort of mine) plugged in all the time as
the battery is already knackered :-) It's a 5 year old acer.
So if I get a brand new laptop are you saying the power lead only put in
when the battery needs recharging?
--
Vj
When they work, they're great. I need to buy a proper 'sit up in bed' pillow
to help me from getting a sore neck though.
Make sure you cycle the battery regularly. So, once in a while run it down.
Mine will take a trip to starbucks in a while.
Basically yeah. It's sort of like running a mobile phone with it plugged
into the wall all the time. Obviously a phone is far more portable but
laptops were initially intended to be highly portable - as technology's got
better though more and more people want them for their compact size and just
sit them on a desk.
If that's what you do, may I recommend a "desktop replacement" laptop, when
you come around to buying another. These ones don't *have* batteries, so
they literally do replace a desktop computer. I believe Asus have one or
two, and they're a very good brand.
But if you do take it around with you a little bit, get a normal one and run
it without plugging it in (bit of a pain I know as most have a power-save
mode which makes the screen dimmer). When the battery gets down, plug it in
and repeat ad infinitum ;-)
I've got a "baby" IBM myself, it's absolutely tiny (sub-notebook, no onboard
drives and such... great internet machine really) but just perfect for
sitting up in bed with :)

Sue
In this sort of application, LEDs may be operated above their rated
current to get more light output at the expense of reduced lifetime.
There's also no defined standard for lifetime (LEDs don't "pop" like
bulbs) - the 100000 hours+ figures are usually the time to fall to 20%
of initial brightness, which would be pretty useless for a reading
lamp.
Cheers

Or do what I do, and take the battery out when used as a desktop for a
period of time.
Even though I've changed the settings, the USB has dimmed again and this
time it's not waking up. Any ideas on how to force a USB to run at full
power? It doesn't make the beep beep noise when I plug it in, so it's not
recognised.

This is probably a really stupid question, but why do you want to use
the lamp when you're not using the laptop? If you were using the
laptop, the power saving wouldn't have kicked-in, and it wouldn't be
an issue, would it?
Is there an uk.tech.usblamps.support? ;o)
Even with the laptop in use the usb ports think that they are not being used
therefore don't pump out much power. So, yes, I am using the laptop but the
usb ports themselves are in power save.

No longer will you have to tilt the screen in the middle of the night to see

Why don't they make the board light up like on a mobile phone! :-)

Noticed my local ALDI were selling a version of this item when I was in
today. Looks exactly the same as the item listed. Sadly, I neglected to note
down the price. Worth checking if you have a store local. Saves all the HK
faff.

Apple Powerbooks do - even more cool is the fact that the brightness of
the keys is automatically adjusted according to how much light is in the
room ;-)
Ah ha!

Nah, take in the lavvy and turn out the lights ;)
I've certainly found it useful. Just waiting to hear back from the seller to
see whether they know how I can get more power to the USB ports .. grrr ..
I've rebooted, removed the battery etc etc....
You could have gone to Aldi to get one for that price. I think that offer
started yesterday (Thursday).

I run my laptop almost all the time with mains power and no battery.
Whenever I do need to run it on battery power, I make sure the battery
is fully discharged before connecting mains power, and then take it
out after turning the laptop off when it's fully charged.
How tolerant are Lithium Ion batteries of being kept fully charged
off-load? Will they lose capacity if they're not cycled often enough?
How often should they be cycled?
--
Humbug
These batteries are stuffed with electronics to stop them from catching
fire. You can't overcharge them as the electronics will stop the charging.
The main thing that will kill a Li-Ion is leaving it uncharged for a long
time. If the cell voltage drops too low then the battery is lost, as the
safety circuits will refuse to let the battery be charged.

I beg to differ. I have a 7 year old Gateway laptop that I used daily
until a couple of years ago It was nearly always mains powered and
always had its battery in. The battery is still good for over an hour.
Same with my current machine, an Apple PowerBook.
