Crazy as it may sound, it may be how their operations work. I had a
parcelforce parcel go 10 miles down the road via the "central hub" for
an amazon delivery. I was nearly tempted to self deliver, but had they
not been in on my way home from work, that would've meant an extra day's
delay and I didn't want to risk it

I worked (a long while ago) for Desoutter, based in Hemel Hempstead.
Their distribution hub was (maybe still is) based in Belgium ... It was
cheaper, way easier, and mostly quicker, for us to send an order for a
tool to our next door neighbour via the distribution hub in Belgium
than it was to hand deliver them ... ;)
When the systems are in place it works extremely well and extremely
cheaply.
