A question to sellers about Paypal payments

I only ever buy on ebay - have never sold anything.

When I first started using ebay, I could pay through paypal using
a card, without having a paypal account (which I don't want).
Then one day without warning, that stopped, because when I went
through to pay in the same way, paypal would only direct me to
create an account and wouldn't let me pay by card. I assumed
(possibly wrongly) that paypal was only allowing so many card
payments before insisting on me having creating a paypal account.
At this point, I stopped bidding on paypal-only items.
I have seen a few items which explicitly say paypal account is
required, but I've never bid on any of those.

Then more recently, I won an item which said card payment
accepted, and when I asked the seller, he said go into paypal,
and I found card payment was working again (and has for a few
more payments since).

So, is this something that you set when you post a listing,
or is it that paypal allows so many card payments before
forcing you to open a paypal account (which I'm not going to
do)? I'm wondering if I'm suddenly going to find again that
paypal stops accepting card payments and wants me to open an
account.

Not a clue, there is not option for sellers, we just have to accept Paypal
and that's it.

The only possible explanation is that we do have the option to stop bidders
who do not have a credit card registered against their Ebay ID from bidding
but can only apply this to very low feedback accounts which does not look to
be what you came up against as you're an established buyer.

Could it be something like your registered card was expired at the time and
you hadn't updated the expiry date from your new card or something perhaps?

As a matter of interest, what is the problem with having a Paypal
account?
The way I look at it I would rather trust my card details to a single
entity rather than give them to every buyer I deal with.

Seller probably has the 'must have paypal account' buyer requirement
set.

Some people are needlessly and excessively paranoid. There is no point in
trying to understand why or get them to explain when there is no good
reason, I just accept it & roll my eyes to myself.

There's a possible chargeback reason.

If something goes wrong with the transaction and you have a Paypal account,
credit card companies have been known to say 'but you were only topping up
your Paypal account' and washing their hands of the problem.

But if you don't have a Paypal account, the card transaction could be argued
to be using Paypal as a card handler, like the service provided by RBS
Worldpay/Barclaycard Merchant/etc - in that case it's harder for the CC to
argue that you were just buying Paypal points.

I have no idea if there's actual case law on this. But it seems like card
companies are arguing that Paypal's buyer protection trumps their Section 75
protection (of the Consumer Credit Act 1974).

This particular poster has asked a similar question at least twice before
on here. The last time was July

When I first started buying on ebay a few years ago, I paid for my first few
transactions via Paypal by credit card. Then that option suddenly vanished --
you could start doing so, but it insisted you opened a paypal account before you
could continue, which I didn't want, so I stopped paying by paypal or bidding
on paypal-only items. I asked on here at the time, and the thought was you could
pay via Paypal by credit card a few times, after which it would insist you opened
a paypal account. I just won an item, was going to pay by cheque, but suddenly
noticed the payment via Paypal by credit card option had reappeared, so I did
that. Any idea if this is likely to stay (in which case I'll consider bidding
on paypal-only items in the future), or if it's going to vanish again? --

(good news for saddos = Google Groups along with the archive search seems to be working
fairly efficiently again )

I only remember because when I asked hinm why he didn't simply open a Paypal
account another poster interjected with the claim that Paypal accounts are easily
hacked. The OP himself didn't respond, or take any further part in the thread.
