have to travel to the PO and can't claim any VAT back
Courier (signed for) �6.99 + VAT collected from my door. , usually delivered

This is because 1st class recorded is primarily for letters and small
packets rather than parcels.

It's also going to be more convenient for some people to drop stuff at
the PO when it suits them, rather than having to notify a carrier that
there's something to collect then wait around until it has been
collected.

The presence of absense of VAT is only important to VAT registered
traders who can claim it back.

Only really useful if you can sit around for hours waiting for the van
to call and collect your package.

I assume that's next working day with no Saturday deliveries ? Plus all
the usual difficulties for buyers who have to be able to sit around from
9.00am to 5.30 pm to receive and sign for the delivery or jump through
hoops to arrange a redelivery.
It might be cheap but there's always a price to pay for that :-)

would be around anyhow?

I send all my parcels 1st class recorded so they need a signature anyhow , -
I advise them of the need when I email the despatch email and no-one has
grumbled

And when you send a large volume of parcels it adds up

Also make sure not to use courier for some remote areas in the UK as they
don't deliver to a lot of them, though some say they do.
Locally the couriers deliver to one public transport depot without informing
the customers and it relies on a member of the public delivering it to the
destination for them. I just dropped two mail order parcels off for
neighbors but I had them with me since yesterday. Remember Royal Mail does
the last mile to any UK destination.
I was on eBay yesterday looking to buy some 230v LED lights but the one
supplier that stocked the items we were wanting only used courier service so
we ordered from China.

As a customer I'm the same and unless I have no practical alternative, will
choose a supplier offering delivery by Royal Mail over one using couriers
any day. Obviously, if you are buying something big, it will probably be
courier or nothing but if the item is medium to small, couriers are simply
too much hassle if you are out of the house all day.
Sometimes sellers catch you out though, an example being when I ordered a
silicon case for an MP3 player from a company selling on Amazon. Next day I
had an email saying it was shipped, via a courier - noooooooo! But by then
it was too late. Lucky for me, my neighbour was home that day otherwise I
would have had to gone to on a 30 mile round trip to collect the blasted
thing.
Also, couriers often seem to have a bit of trouble finding places. :-)
I needed a new monitor and ordered one from Amazon but they at least allow
delivery to another address so "no problem" with the courier I thought and
asked for it to be delivered to work. But the day of delivery came and it
went, even though I could see from the tracking it was on the van, and then
my phone rung. It was the courier company (a major one at that) saying I had
given them a wrong address so it had been taken back to the depot. What! I
had given them the correct address and confirmed this while on the phone.
So the next day comes and I am on tenter hooks but at around 3pm see the van
draw up. I rush down to intercept him outside in the street as he is looking
puzzled.
"Where is the Ark" says the courier.
"Excuse me?" says me.
"It says here I have to deliver this to the Ark" says the courier.
So I look at the address...... where I work is on a Business Park and that
line of the address has wrapped on the label.
