What is this FAQ?
This is a document for new people to UPB, it is aimed to help them into
their first posting, their first munch and their first UPB experience.
It isn’t a piercing or tattooing FAQ. It will not answer questions
related to piercing, jewellery, healing, tattooing, drawing, branding,
scarification, shops and the like. It should tell you how to find this
information.
Any thoughts on things you would like to see here can be sent to Smeg
(sm...@ukbodyart.org) for consideration.
What is UPB?
This is the official Charter for UPB (uk.people.bodyart)

This newsgroup is for the discussion of tattooing, piercing,
scarification, branding and other body modifications for those in the
UK, or with a connection to the UK. Questions, recommendations,
experiences, observations, discussion of events and employment or
training opportunities related to the above are all on-topic.
ADVERTISING
Advertising is forbidden, but posters may refer to a body-art
related business in a sig of four lines or fewer. Personal adverts may
be posted to alt.personals.bodyart or uk.adverts.personals.
BINARIES & FORMATTING
Encoded binaries (e.g. pictures, compressed files, etc.), are
*forbidden*, except for cryptographic signatures (e.g. PGP) Binaries
belong on a web or ftp site, whose URL may be posted, or relevant
pictures may be posted to alt.binaries.pictures.bodyart with a pointer
in uk.people.bodyart

What is uk.people.bodyart?
uk.people.bodyart (UPB) is a newsgroup. Sometimes called a Usenet group.
Sometimes, and inaccurately, called a message board. People send
messages to the newsgroup. Other people reply to those messages. That’s
it in a nutshell really. People don’t post binaries (picture attachments
etc) as it breaks the rules of the charter (see above).
History
The newsgroup was created on 25 August 1999, by Kate. After a long
discussion it was set up to provide an alternative environment to
rec.arts.bodyart, which was becoming more and more irrelevant to certain
aspects of bodyart culture in the UK.
UPB is an internet-based community for all people interested in bodyart.
The majority of participants are based in the UK, but we do have a few
Australian and American members, however anyone is welcome. There are
many people on UPB with experience at all levels. Professional piercers
and tattooists mix with 16 year olds wanting their first ‘proper’
pierce. The only thing that will decide how others treat you is how you
act.
UPB is more than just uk.people.bodyart. There is an active IRC channel
on DALnet, #bodyart-uk, and there is a web page,

What is #bodyart-uk
#bodyart-uk is an IRC channel. What’s IRC? IRC is Internet Relay Chat.
Getting onto IRC isn’t something that is covered here so have a look at
http://www.ukbodyart.org/irc.html. A place to hang around in an
evening, chatting to like minded folks. A friendly place, which can be
busy one night, and dead the next, so if no one is in, just hang around,
someone may be soon!
History
Was also created by Kate, probably not long after uk.people.bodyart was
created. In mid 2000 Kate passed on control of the group to Smeg.
What is http://www.ukbodyart.org
Set up by Smeg, the web site stores over 50 profiles of UPB regulars
with pictures of people’s bodyart. It also stores pictures and stories
from the various get togethers we have. Satans_Little_Helper has begun
compiling a list of tattoo and piercing studios that others want to
recommend. It is hoped that this can be a resource for people who want
to know which studios to visit (or avoid!) without becoming too involved
in UPB.
History
Smeg started this at the end of 1999 as a home for the profiles. We
started hosting munch pics there, and the number of profiles increased
so much we decided we needed our own separate site. Shannon from BME
kindly offered full hosting from the BME Servers, and after a short
debate on a domain name www.ukbodyart.org was born. There are now over
50 profiles on the site, with 100 megs of images which grows every
munch. SLH is now compiling recommendations for the List, which has over
30 Studios listed so far. Get your local shop down!
What isn’t UPB?
UPB isn’t moderated, which means that people will post off topic and
inappropriate messages here.
