I have recently tried to raise the question of responsibility for the
censored - oops, moderated - newsgroup uk.rec.cycling.moderated. Nobody
has been forthcoming - what a surprise - so I have had to make further
enquiries.

Do you mind me asking their point of view? I feel sure the moderators have
made sure that everything is in order and approved. Ho, ho, ho.

Subject: Newsgroup within the University of Cambridge

I am not sure if you are aware but one of your users has begun hosting a
moderated newsgroup within the University network. I am curious to know if
this is authorised, and if the University of Cambridge takes responsibility
for the group and its contents? The group uk.rec.cycling.moderated is run
on "rapun.sel.cam.ac.uk" also know as "chiark" by Ian Chapman.

I note that your network rules prohibit giving network access to
unauthorised users - perhaps this includes anybody able to post to usenet? I
do not believe that many of the moderators are students at your University
either.

He and his moderators have gone against many usenet traditions such as
arbitrarily blocking posts from Microsoft users, and refusing to make
moderation decisions public. He has been sanctioned by the UK usenet
committee for such behaviour before. However, that is by the by. Perhaps you
should clarify if this group is approved and authorised by the University of
Cambridge. Is this behaviour acceptable?

This PP is a forgery - it is not from me.

Also - the email - purporting to be from me was also a forgery.

I don't - and I didn't say it was.

I was referring to the email which was attached to the post - perhaps
you didn't notice it?

Do you think that you are a smart-arse?

Presumably the reply went to jms.

I find in mildly amusing[1] that jzg had to start using pgp signatures in
urc due to forgeries and there were several[2] jms posts complaining
about him using pgp.

Tim.

[1] I find it very irritating that people resort to fraud in order to
try to score points whoever they are trying to impersonate.

[2] I don't see jms posts at all. This is from seeing quotes by other
people from what I think were originally jms posts.

The forged article was posted from the eternal-september server and is in
breach of the AUP. I suggest you complain to:
