I'm already thinking about what to play.

Thanks Nige for organising the National again. A great time was had by all.

If it wasn't for someone like yourself (and the others of course) putting
all the effort in, it just wouldn't happen.

I hope you realise how much we all appreciate what you do.

UKMGNPU 2009 = utter, utter, total and complete WIN.

Huge huge thanks to the manglement for their heroic efforts in staging
this years do and the same to all those who contributed gear, time and
effort for the superb stage setup we all got play through. It was great
to catch up again with so many regular UKMG-ers and to put names and
faces to others who I've only encountered online before now.

The UKMG National has been one of the regular highlights of my year for
the last 9 years now - long may it continue!

Yeah. Highlights for me (the guilty parties can flesh out the stories as
much as they dare later..):

The curry on Friday night. A slightly cramped venue but the food was better
than last year

Paul Simpson kicking (literally!) the proceedings to live with and
incredibly vulgar song that had tears of laughter streaming down my face.
A most awesomely awesome opener.

Nige inventing "Tweed Metal"...

Pete Stokes' various performances of Somewhere Over The Rainbow (with all
due credit to Kate for the vox - Nice One Girl!), Sylvia and Nivram (also
with due credit to the other performists on those two songs). I've known
Pete for about twenty years and his playing never ceases to impress me.

Justin Otto's story (very late on Saturday night, in the bar at the Portland
Hotel) about the Hotel Window and The Meat Tenderiser and the story about
The Queue For The Toilet.
(was that a true story about someone playing Eruption using a cat? or was I
even more drunk than I thought)

Greg and Ross Edwards sharing The Honeymoon Suite at the Portland....
(Who put the bouquet of flowers in the room for them? :-) )

There will be a few videos on Youtube later. Link to follow.

The point I knew I had found kindred lunatic spirits in this group was
during the Bristol UKMGPU where Jon attracted the attention of the pub
cat with his Van Halen rendition, and following the drunken insistence
of the group tried to teach the cat to play it. There is a photo
somewhere taken at the abandonment of the exercise called "Tiddles
plays guitar" or something like that but I can't find it anywhere.
Perhaps Paul or Clive have a copy?
I seem to recall the cat's claws being a problem as it kept grabbing
the strings whilst tapping.

Regarding the first one. Well. Nuff said.

The middle story has no photographs and only some mild emotional
scarring as evidence.

Wow indeed. My memories.

- the M6 being (as usual) a river on the long drive south.
- my sat nav thinking the quickest way from the north is directly
through the centre of Manchester at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon....
- Paul Simpson at the curry house making me laugh so much that tears
really were running down my cheeks.
- meeting and greeting all of you - especially folk like Clive whom
I've not seen at a National for ages.
- my son Michael making his UKMG debut on bass and giving me many
proud dad moments!
- apologies to my co-performers for the trainwreck on I wish that I
Knew
- Paul Simpson for raising the roof with Killing Floor
- Alive
- Two Minutes to Midnight
- in fact every song and every performance in the whole set
list...........
- George for picking WYW and letting me join him.
- the teenage rhythm section. Sam Ackers drumming was fabulous and,
admitting to bias, I thought Michael's bass playing was spot on
too. Maybe us old farts can learn from the kids?
- The poignancy of stopping in a smalll Yorkshire village at 11:00
this morning.
- iPhones everywhere..................
- Tipton amps, you can keep your Marshalls, Cornfords and your
Boogies.
- Mike Whittaker's tardis of a Roomster. (If you didn't see it
packed with the PA you missed something special and shame on you for
not helping pack up)

So the only question is : who's going to register www.ukmgnational-x.com
for next year?

bring it on!!!

I concurr whole-heartedly.

It's hard to pick out indivdual highlights - I enjoy catching up with
everyone, and hearing you all play.

So instead I shall simply identify a few particularly memorable
moments.

Clive's triumphant return!
A mellow Pablo tune.
Sending the children out of the room for the very first song.
Mr Creedy and Dr Booth's unexpected attendance.
Greg's fretless bass on Tears in Heaven.
Alive.
Superb stand-in "Faith No More" vocals from Neil MacDougall
Curried conversations.
Damn, I never should've begun this list, as more and more moments are
jostling for a mention.

Well I received some words of wisdom from Matt some time ago who told
me the secret of his wonderful photography. He said, "Take lots of
photos and only display the good ones". And so I resolved to take
absolutely bucket loads of photos this year, so that I would have some
nice ones.

Sadly it appears that almost all of the photos I took during the
afternoon were either blurry or horribly unflattering.

Here are the blurry ones - the others will be destroyed.

Rock on UKMG, I'll see you all soon!

One of the best and most enjoyable one's so far. I really can't think
of anything to highlight, it was all good.

Thanks to Nige et al for their hard work and thanks to the people
being kind enough to let me play or sing for them. I truly enjoyed
every tune I was a part of (as you may have noticed!)

Hi,

As ever, The National is my Christmas and birthday combined. Great to see my
old friends and meet new ones.

Many, many highlights, but most noteworthy for me were Pete Stokes' playing
on 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow', with Kate's haunting voice. Lump in the
throat time. Seriously. Make the best of it, I don't do serious as a rule.

Pete's playing and the awesome keyboard chops of my partner in crime, Sir
Andre de Sinister on 'Sylvia' . I've seen/heard Focus do this live and this
was just as good. No, better in fact, as these guys *had no rehearsal*
Simply awesome.

Young Sam's drumming and Sinclair Jr's bass playing, especially on 'Nivram'.
Much kudos to both.

Here's looking forward to No. 10

regards,

Trev

Excellent - cheers for the photos Justin!

In the spirit of 'UKMGNPU highlights threads' gone by, here are the bits
from this year that have stuck in my head (lack of inclusion does not
imply lack of quality):

- walking in the pub, wondering if I was in the right one and then
immediately recognising Clive Murray from behind solely from his
silhouette

- catching up with everyone in the Taj Mahal, top curry venue, great craic

- Nige back in the pub: "I don't know whose hat I'm wearing right now"

- walking round Buxton in the Autumn morning sunshine (successfully
avoided hangovers this year)

- having a rather huge 'seriously, WTF am I doing?' moment while playing
the first song of the day (I imagined performing this one a bit later in
the day when we'd all had a few drinks, not at two in the afternoon with
kids running around - here's the original for those who are curious,
NSFW or anywhere else for that matter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLm5oSJRxIU )

- Catching up with Caitln and her bro and being blown away by how
insanely good she's got since she went to drum school

- Justin Otto doing Crowded House. I want an album of this.

- Wish You Were Here - ace.

- Kate singing acoustic numbers. Seriously - wow.

- Ross and Greg on Tears In Heaven. 'Emotional' doesn't even come close.

- Jons Rory Gallagher number on mandolin. Yee ha!

- Sam Ackers - how on earth do you get that good that young? You played
a blinder sir.

- Seeing Neil McD again and being rather impressed by his capacity to ROCK

- Sylvia (that Pete chap can play a bit can't he?)

- Pete Ackers making his debut

- Playing 'Killing Floor' and giving my nice new Classic Vibe Strat its
live debut with Caitlin on drums. Great fun.

- PLUG IN BAY-BEH! CROOCIFAHS MAH ENNA-MIZ! etc.

- Mr Brownstone. Totally nailed.

- Trevs blooz and Andrews keys

- Sinclair Jr. playing some *fantastic* bass

- Sharing tales of meat tenderisers, cats being used for guitar solos in
Bristol and pepper-pot abuse late into the evening in the hotel bar with
Dave Benj, Mr. Otto, 5x5 et al

- the Manglements sterling efforts at staging the whole goddamn thing.
Impeccable, hats off to you chaps, many thanks.

In short: the UKMG National PU continues to go from strength to
strength. Really looking forward to seeing whatever video got taken.

The only question now is: what do we do for the 10th anniversary next year?

:D

I have just got in, dumped the pictures from the camera. There are 285
pictures alltogether, and 18GB of video.

I uploaded some of them this morning on facebook, I will upload a
selection of the others later on as there are some really good ones, and
make the album public, that way I think you can see them even if you are
not on facebook.

Epic. as Clive said on Twitter earlier, best NW ever.

Heroes and highspots:

MrPingwin saving the day with his bass cab - I /COULD/ possibly have
got another cab in the Tardis^H^H^H^H^HRoomster, but it would have
been .... interesting. There was still enough physical empty air in
there to match the volume of a 2x15, but without a complete repack it
would have involved spreading it like jam. Or leaving two monitor
wedges behind.
(For those interested, the full load was:
2 x 1x15" subs
2 x 1x10" tops
4 x 1x12" monitor wedges
1 x 4U rack
1 x 8U rack
1 x 24-4-2 mixer
1 x 76 key synth
5 mic stands
1 keyboard stand
2 (unused) speaker extension stands
2 x mic cases
1 x cable box
1 x mains extension reel
1 x rucksac
.... and me :D
)

Trev, for awesome backline (my god, what a sound) and running repairs
on above bass cab.

Everyone who helped unload, rig, derig and load. My back thanks you,
guys. Still amazed it fitted.

Kate's vocals on 'Over The Rainbow'

Greg's bass on 'Tears in Heaven'

Paul NAILING the feel on 'Killing Floor'

The whole band nailing the GnR 'heading for disaster but not qute'
feel of 'Mr Brownstone'

Sylvia. Awesome.

Sam and Michael - a rocking rhythm section whose combined age is less
than mine. :D

Caitlin, for surviving 20+ mins of jam!

Let's do it again!

I had a thought about that that I shared with a few people. Perhaps a
Greatest Hits' package where we each choose a favourite performance
from the last 10 years and do it again. I'm sure we can pull together
a complete list of tunes from the past 8 years.

Respect to you too, mate. Arguably - no, definitely - the best yet!

I'm not going to list anyone or anything as being especially superb, as it
would just be repeating everything that has been said so far and also might
well exclude others whose names I don't yet know or have forgotten, on
account of my failing memory and hearing, and also the fact that at the
moment I'm slightly - well, absolutely to be honest - three sheets to the
wind on Mr Jameson's finest.

In the words of Mr Terry Wogan, you all made an old man very happy!

Some videos will eventually ensue, when I can remember how to capture, edit
and post them on YouTube.

Oh - and Nige, you were joking about "maybe" next year, weren't you?
Sorry, mate - you clearly didn't read rule 13(a) of Da Manglement Handbook,
which, inter alia, states:
"UKMGPU(N)s shall be organised on an annual basis by the current or incoming
Manglement on an ongoing and in-perpetuity basis until such time as 99% of
those attending an annual event vote by a show of hands at that meeting to
the effect that such events shall be hereby cancelled."
I don't recall such a vote being held....

I had a good weekend - looking forward to picking up the vids and
pics.

Didn't realise Caitlin was the drummer - gave her my Email address but
forgot to ask her name....very funky laid-back style. Cool. Had a lot
of fun gassing about studying music - and generally shooting the
breeze. For me, at any rate, a very fired-up rush of a day.

I have no idea whether I played well or not - it's wierd when you get
kind of thrown into it with a bunch of guys you've never met let alone
played with - a bit like being on the X-Factor really.

"Pete! You're on!"

Come to think of it, I know a place not a hundred miles from where
Steve is moving to. Small town (Malestroit), just up the road from
Vannes. Nice little chateaux, sleeps about 24. Very friendly owner.
Last time I looked he was letting it out for about two grand a week,
self catering.

Now that really would be a plot worth plotting - it's in about 10
acres of land - no noise restrictions......

Kinda wishing I had more chance to chill and natter - was great to be

I'd like to add a big thank you to the entire group, for personal
reasons - in the run up to this weekend, i'd made my mind up to go
home afterwards, sell all the gear, and forget about guitar playing -
it was no longer doing anything for me, and seemed pointless.

But after the events of this weekend, i'm totally enthused again,
motivated to practice and try and record some stuff etc.

So huge props and hugs to every single one of you, for making that

We could always do the RMMGA thing and take a place for three nights -
given what everyone will have spent on B&B, eating out & retail prices
for booze it wouldn't be any more expensive. We have managed to get
away with 200pp for the last 3 years, full board, fully catered, all
the beer you can drink.

One of the problems with an electric meeting is that it's
fundamentally noisy - The hall at Hargate is big enough to sleep 35 or
so and the suites are far away enough from the playing area to escape
and get a bit of practice/do workshops/crash etc without being unduly
disturbed.

Samaritunes - sounds good.
I'm glad [5x5] decided to carry on, he is too good to give up.

I had decided pre Buxton that if I bombed out I'd just sell everything
afterwards as I'd just be wasting my time.
Sure enough, I dropped just about every note I was supposed to play - I
sucked big time.

However, I came away thinking "Where did I go wrong?", "What can I do to
improve?", " was it just nerves as I practiced the songs OK?"
"how come I flapped about like a dying fish washed up on a toxic beach?"

So the question went from "I wonder how much I could get for this lot on
ebay?" to "What happened there!!!", "How can I fix it?"[1]

This was then followed by "I wonder if I could do an acoustic version of the
Foo's Everlong next year?........"

etc....

It just goes to show, never say never.......

[1] if anyone does happen to know "How I can fix it" I'd be keen to hear.

Genuinely most embarrassing moment on stage ever - screwing up the

It's often pot luck just doing one tune in a night, without much warm up,
getting your ear in, through unfamiliar gear, unfamiliar line-up, unfamiliar
venue etc. especially if you don't play out regularly or haven't for a
while. I'm rubbish at playing set pieces nightly. The rest of my band were
better at that, so I just played augmentation bits and wheeled on for solos.
I did write a few tunes though, to compensate.

Nobby, I think it's the fear of failure that increases one's anxiety. Really,
you just have to get up there and enjoy your moment in the spotlight. Last year
I played bass in All Right Now, we had two drummers on that song, plus Ross
Edwards on vox and guitar and Steve Robinson on lead guitar and Mike W on keys,
and we were smoking hot. It was utterly brilliant but sadly uncaptured on video.

Contrast that with a rendition of I Want You (She's So Heavy) at Albrighton the
previous year, again featuring myself on bass and Steve Robinson on guitar. It
was a complete debacle. After a couple of false starts we crashed and we burned.
Oh yes, we crashed.

I'd travelled rather a long way for my moment in the spotlight, plus I had my
daughter with me, so there was no way I was leaving that stage without playing
something. Fortunately Trevor and Steve Cobham were next up to play Badge, and
luckily for me their bass player had pulled out so I depped on that, buggered it
up royally but was so pleased to be playing with two stalwarts of UKMG. I got a
rousing reception at the end of the song when Trevor announced to the audience
where I'd travelled from.

It's a great feeling to play before these guys, Nobby, they are incredibly
supportive, so I wouldn't let a few dropped notes put you off. Hopefully I'll
watch you in awe at a future Buxton.

One of the features of the first two meetups, which seems to have gone

For various reasons, I've been going through a similar phase for the
last two years. It's a long story, but basically the selfishness and
greed of a few people put me off music big time.

However, I'm happy to say that since I got the Vintage LP, I've been a
lot more interested in music, and having it sitting in the corner
whispering "play me" has made things a lot better.

Probably because we only have a venue for one day. If we could take
over a hotel for the weekend like we used to, then it's a possibility.

We also did a 'what yer brung' session to show off our rigs. But with
quite often the same faces turning up, there's little need for this
anymore, unless someone has something particularly cool and special to
amaze us with.

In general, it's become more a meeting of old and new friends and
playing music than a guitar convention. Which I'm quite happy with.

I think our bigest mistake was trying to recuit a drummer and keyboard
player on the day, neither of whom had any prior knowledge of the tune.
