I've been talking to Bob Pritchard who manages the Kirkgate Centre at
Cockermouth a lovely venue that puts on folk as part of its regular
programming. Bob and his family, and the venue itself escaped the
floods, but Bob writes:

>things have been very hectic here, and we are involved in very
>immediate events to help those displaced from homes and businesses
>(drop-ins and socials) as well as the fund-raising initiatives by local
>artists - The Band ESP have released "Over the Rainbow" as a
>downloadable single : there's a link to iTunes and the you-tube video
>on the front page of www.thekirkgate.com - I wonder if you could
>spread that information round your contacts ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiE1nfZWD00

And for 71p you can download it from itunes:
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/over-rainbow-in-aid-cumbria-flood/id3433
92498

A bunch of us folkies are talking about doing a benefit (one or more) at
the Kirkgate for the flood appeal. They reckon they'll need 2m and 2
years to rebuild.

So go and download like mad!
:-)

Everyone around here is working hard at fundraising. Last Saturday
Belfagan's band were out in the streets of Cockermouth singing carols in
3-part harmony and playing tunes on accordions & other instruments: in just
over an hour we raised 110. The next day Belfagan danced in Keswick and
gathered in another 132. Scott McKenzie of local band Eventual Breakdown
(not exactly "folk" but still ...!) has written a song, and last Thursday
over 100 of us went along to Mitchell's cattle mart to record a scratch
choir part along with the band - it'll be on release any day now. The other
single released for the appeal is a re-recording of "Calling all the heroes"
by Cumbrian band It Bites - their only big hit from the 80s. I don't have
details of how to get that one though.

I'll certainly come and see you lot if you turn up at the Kirkgate!

Hi,
I'm completely fine about this idea, but am slightly puzzled that the
principle place where you are suggesting raising money with a benefit
is the place effected. Is this a form of self help, or am I missing
something?
We at the Conwy Folk Club www.conwyfolkclub.org.uk, if approached,
would probably raise money, especially if the Cockermouth Folk music
community were effected.
Perhaps we should be raising awareness on the folk circuit - just a
thought...
Hope this helps
Tony

Having been in contact with Bob at the Kirkgate centre this is what he
suggested. The Kirkgate does, of course, pull in an audience from
outside Cockermouth as well as from the town itself.

The Artisan reunion doesn't start until July 2010, but we've volunteered
to contribute a no-fee concert. This appeal is going to be ongoing for
some time.

Other concerts may be earlier.

The Kirkgate audience comes from quite a wide catchment area, but of course
it's true that it's the same people who are continually being asked for
money. Also we need to remember that the floods affected a lot more than
just Cockermouth, which admittedly got the worst of it. Keswick, Workington,
Ambleside, Ulverston come to mind at once, as well as the many farmers who
are tearing their hair out at the moment because their fields have been
ravaged by rocks and scree as the raging torrent passed over them, leaving
all sorts of debris to clean up, and in many cases not much grass or topsoil
left. And some of these guys have only recently recovered from foot & mouth
...

That's rather a good idea. I do know that people outside the local area are
keen to help: the first bit of fundraising we did, dancing at Rheged visitor
centre a few days after the flood, attracted the attention of a guy from
Lincoln, demostrating crafts at a craft fair that happened to be on at the
same time. He offered to take one of our collecting buckets back to Lincoln
and do some collecting there for us, as he was sure people would be happy to
contribute.

Maybe what we really should be doing is putting on a travelling show of
Cumbrian musicians to travel around other parts of the country and raise
awareness. Trouble is, we're all too busy here cleaning up the mess ...
