Proving that not all sales were wonderful in an era where album sales
overall where reaching new heights, this was number 1 with a sale of
31,500, itself an increase from the 30,000 it sold the previous week
when it climbed to #1. Mid 2000 saw a run of number 1 albums that
struggled to record a decent weekly sale. From the charts week ending
30/06/01 to 06/10/01 no number 1 album managed to sell 100,000 in a week
with most selling well under 50,000.

> 02 (6) David Gray - White Ladder

The following week the album would reach number 1 in its 66th week on
the chart, all consecutive and established a new record for the slowest
climb to #1 for an album that didn't drop off the chart between first
appearance on the chart and first appearance at #1. Rumours by Fleetwood
Mac held the record to that point, reaching #1 in its 49th week in
January 1978. By the time this album reached #1 it had already sold
1.52m copies.

This album is bland but inoffensive but was very much the dinner party
album or as I prefer to call them, coffee table album, of its day along
with Dido's No Angel. I just don't like his voice though Babylon is OK.

> 03 (NE) Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World

I liked Juxtaposed With U but I don't really know that much by them
mainly due to their in one week then out chart career which meant I
never really got a chance to hear (or at least remember) much by them.

Sold 25,000 copies this week in 2001.

> 04 (3) D12 - Devil's Night
> 05 (8) Gorillaz - Gorillaz

Back when they seemed like a good idea.

> 06 (2) Usher - 8701
> 07 (5) Dido - No Angel

Not a bad album actually if you just want something playing in the
background.

> 08 (9) Eagles - The Very Best Of The Eagles

I own this one, or at least I think it's this one.

> 09 (4) Travis - The Invisible Band

I own this one, bought it because I liked Side. The album is quite dull.
They were massive back in the day.

> 10 (7) Shaggy - Hot Shot
> 11 (12) Wyclef Jean - The Ecleftic: Two Sides To A Book
> 12 (NE) 'N Sync - Celebrity

Sold 13,000 copies to enter at #12. In the US it entered at #1 and sold
1,880,000 copies.

> 13 (10) Stereophonics - Just Enough Education To Perform

The album I always meant to buy but never got around to.

> 14 (11) Wheatus - Wheatus

Semi forgotten two and a bit hit wonders.

> 15 (15) Robbie Williams - Sing When You're Winning
> 16 (14) Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

I bought this, was quite into this band at the time.

> 17 (NE) The Bangles - Eternal Flame - The Best Of

I won this, great album to listen to.

> 18 (16) Ash - Free All Angels

Another album I always meant to buy but never did.

> 19 (24) Limp Bizkit - Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water

Unfortunately I did buy this, possibly the worst album I've ever bought.
Bought in a Friday afternoon semi drunken haze it serves as a reminder
why afternoon drinking is bad for you.

> 20 (26) Anastacia - Not That Kind
> 21 (20) Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants And Jacket

Silly title that probably made the geeks laugh and everyone else
grimace. I don't mind Blink 182 to be honest but most people see them as
a bit of a joke.

> 22 (22) Oxide And Neutrino - Execute
> 23 (23) Gabrielle - Rise
> 24 (21) Faithless - Outrospective
> 25 (18) Eddy Grant - The Greatest Hits
> 26 (19) Daft Punk - Discovery
> 27 (27) Muse - Origin Of Symmetry

Bought this the following year. Excellent album and good videos to go
with them. The videos remind me of the MTV2 daily Top 10 viewers chart
countdowns from mid to late 2001, along with Blink 182, Korn, Sum 41 and
a whole host of other acts.

> 28 (RE) 2Pac - Greatest Hits
> 29 (NE) Sisqo - Return Of Dragon
> 30 (37) U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind

Bought this cheap from a guy in the pub who used to do cheap, pirated
CDs as well as DVDs and he also had a lucrative sideline in adult
videos! He had a good little business going until he was busted by the
BPI accompanied by the police, making the front page of Music Week! I
wonder what happened to him once he got out of prison, he was never
heard of again in the town...

> 31 (32) Basement Jaxx - Rooty
> 32 (30) Eva Cassidy - Songbird

Another coffee table album and this one made the worse by her version of
Over The Rainbow which you just couldn't escape back then.

> 34 (28) Damage - Since You've Been Gone
> 35 (13) Beta Band - Hot Shots II
> 36 (25) Aaliyah - Aaliyah

Three weeks from the date of this chart she was dead. In fact news of
her death came through on the radio as I was in the middle of
registering at ukmix in the early hours of August 26 2001.

Bought this when cheap at Music Zone. Only a handful of songs I like.

The thought of Marti Pellow's smile irritates me, it used to ruin a Wet
Wet Wet video more than the song ever did.

would probably be far better if someone else was singing it...

> 59 (54) Papa Roach - Infest

Another forgotten act from this era, I quite liked Last Resort even if
the lyrics are a bit dodgy.

> 60 (43) UB40 - The Very Best Of - 1980-2000

Another album I bought from that guy in my local...

> 61 (51) Madonna - The Immaculate Collection

sound dreadful in the versions that appear here.

It's still all Jamie Oliver's fault.

> 68 (50) U2 - The Best Of 1980-1990

I bought this, took to 2008 to actually buy it though. The best part of
their Best Of releases, its 90s companion comes nowhere near.

> 69 (NE) ABC - Look Of Love - The Very Best Of ABC

The Lexicon Of Love is all you really need. Most of what they released
after that was ropey.

> 70 (RE) Turin Brakes - The Optimist LP

I liked Pain Killer though that was long after this album.

I prefer this to Slim Shady LP overall, as it I like Eminem in dark and
angry mode.

This was at the peak of my second era of music interest, and when I had the
most disposable income, so it's no surprise that I own a fair number of
these.

>07 (5) Dido - No Angel

This was one of the best albums of the year.

>09 (4) Travis - The Invisible Band

This wasn't, but it was passable enough.

>16 (14) Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

This is one of the albums that introduced me to a new genre.

>30 (37) U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind

Another of the best albums of the year. No, make that one of the best of
the decade. After the experimentation of Zooropa and the relative
cul-de-sac of Pop, this was widely hailed as U2's return to the classic
sound of The Joshua Tree. And, yes, it was a very, very good album. But, in
retrospect, it was also a return to the rut that they'd tried to escape
with Pop, and they've been stuck in it ever since.

>32 (30) Eva Cassidy - Songbird

I feel slightly guilty about being one of the millions who only discovered
Eva Cassidy after she was dead. And I feel slightly embarrassed at being
caught up in the posthumous hype. To tell the truth, only Live at Blues
Alley was really any good.

>41 (33) Madonna - Music

I really liked her previous album, so I bought this on spec without ever
hearing any of it, and was rather disappointed as a result.

>48 (48) Coldplay - Parachutes

Little did we know how big they were destined to be.

>68 (50) U2 - The Best Of 1980-1990

As compilations go, a pretty good one.

>71 (70) Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

I've never really been into rap, but I liked what I'd heard of Eminem on
the radio and TV, so I bought this. In retrospect, that was a mistake. I'm
not exactly a prude, but the radio edits conceal the extent to which Eminem
relies on swearing as a substitute for creativity. Listening to this album
every other fucking word seems to be a fucking four-letter word, and it's
just fucking wearing on the fucking ears after a fucking while.

>74 (67) The Beatles - 1
>75 (RE) ABBA - Gold - Greatest Hits

I own both of these, although I listen to the latter more than the former.

As opposed to his usual upbeat pop? :p

I've never heard anything from him that wouldn't make Jack The Ripper
seem mellow in comparison.

Well, there's a distinction between his dark "serious" singles like 'Cleanin
Out My Closet', 'The Way I Am', 'When I'm Gone' and more recently 'Not
Afraid' pn the one hand, and the "comedy" ones like 'My Name Is', 'Ass Like
That', 'We Made You'.

And of course it had first been released even longer ago than that. I can
just about remember when he was just a cult act I'd heard about from Divine
Comedy fans, and I think I did almost buy the original indie version of the
album once. I suppose that might have been something to boast about, but
then again I'd have been one track short.

I do quite like it, although it does rather snatch defeat from the jaws of
victory with that interminable cover version of 'Say Hello Wave Goodbye' at
the end.

IMO they were already past their prime by now, and even the good songs
weren't sounding as good as they should.
In fact I only remembered yesterday that I bought this album for £1 about a
year ago.

Unusually, this was also announced as a Mercury Prize nominee in the week of
release.

Good point.

True, although even this sold a couple of million. It doesn't sound like it.

This shows up in the charity shops even more than the Travis albums!

I think it must have been 2009 by the time I finally got round to it. I
think I was in denial about U2 for quite a while because of stuff like
'Elevation'.

Agreed. Fun fact: neither of them actually contains any tracks from 1990.

I think you might have a point there. BTW, I checked the cover to make sure
this wasn't called *The* Look Of Love.

Well, I liked them both. Another Mercury nominee.

I trust everyone else has found the hidden track by now.

> 03 (NE) Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World

One of the swiftest Mercury prize nominations ever, about two days after it
was released. This may or may not have contributed to it becoming their
highest-charting album.

> 18 (16) Ash - Free All Angels

> 35 (13) Beta Band - Hot Shots II

I heard this being played out on the radio. Evidently I didn't like enough
of it to buy it.

> 42 (41) The Avalanches - Since I Left You

Second album anyone?

> 46 (44) REM - Reveal

Bought this for £1:99 in a charity shop suspiciously soon after it came out.

> 48 (48) Coldplay - Parachutes

Must listen to this again sometime.

> 49 (58) Jennifer Lopez - J Lo

Did I mention the gratuitous swearing?

> 52 (RE) Zero 7 - Simple Things

Another one I bought in a charity shop, but only for 50p. Not sure I've ever
listened to it all the way through.

> 58 (52) Radiohead - Amnesiac

Now this one I did pay full price for (even more, really, because I bought
the version in the special packaging).
IIRC I lost my first mobile phone on the way home from buying it.

Excellent album which had also just been nominated for the Mercury. And
there was a single out the next week.

Which presumably applies to most albums, so why mention this one
specifically?
