whereas Mika's sales were entirely download.

And at least one sale on 7" too - that was me doing my bit.
I am a wee bit disappointed here, although that's partly because I thought
it would be a good storyline for this Just Jack song to knock the X-Factor
winner off the top. And also because it would be nice to have a Number One
with the word "aspersions" in it.
As it is, though, Mika himself proves to have had some history with Simon
Cowell, and I think he's also the first Lebanese act to top the UK chart.
But I'd still have been happy for him to wait another week. Nonetheless,
Just Jack has done extremely well for an act whose previous efforts all
missed the Top 75.

Everyone's been making the obvious "Brimful of Jeans" comments, but am I the
only one who thinks this sounds like 'Angel Of Harlem' sped up?

extent of setting a schedule for which tracks they intend to download en
masse in the coming weeks. She seems more bemused herself.

I think it's their first mention in the chart show itself, but they did read
out some Top 200 positions on Jo Whiley's show once.

I always thought that Abba album was budget-priced.
Meanwhile, the Guillemots re-enter because of their single, and JoJo and the
Ordinary Boys climb for similar reasons. Ray Lamontagne got nominated for a
Brit.
The only truly new entry is Nicky Spence at 69 - I bet he's done better in
Scotland though.

A lot of artists come up with at least one good successful track -
perhaps by the law of averages... :)

Because 'Starz In Their Eyes' is a veiled attack on X-Factor and similar

(presumably) true, but then again it's also been available for months

It was only announced in the middle of the week, presumably because the
record company saw the mids.
According to the NME, it's now due on the 5th of March - of course, the
other single they were about to release in February is now off the agenda.

If it weren't for that, I don't think I'd even predict it for Top 20,

I can't see any reason why this would sell significantly less than
'Sunrise', so it's probably decided by the competition.
Oh, and Little Man Tate have already had three Top 40 hits without many

I can see one reason - I bought Sunrise, but not this.

on a Maxi-CD, it just wasn't worth it. The video & other extras are
going to me on the album special edition anyway.
BTW, found yet another of my fav female artists is releasing a new album
this year - Joss Stone.
Add that to Dido, Lucie Silvas, Norah Jones, Katie Melua, and Kylie, and
it going to be a good year for me on albums. :)

Strictly speaking though, the artist credit has changed here. And I'd
consider changing from a record without any vocals to one with them a
significant change.
Mind you, the complication in this case is that it might only have been in
the Top 200 last week because of the new version.

I think it's in the nature of these things that they're going to be one-week
wonders, though. Whoever's backing the campaign is obviously going to want
to corrall the maximum possible number of people into one week so as to get
the highest entry position - and then those people are hardly going to pay
to download the thing twice. The best hope for anything orchestrated is that
the publicity will encourage people to actually want the song.

Of course - and that's why the Robbie album that's selling for a fiver is
still in the main chart.
But I always assumed that 18 Hits was the sort of album that nobody would
expect to charge full price for because after all if you wanted to buy an
Abba compilation you'd probably get Abba Gold; this would only look
worthwhile to most people if it was a lot cheaper.

What about The Fray 'How To Save A Life'. ISTM that it's likely to pass
it's peak appeal well before the CD appears, unless Epic wise up and
move the release date forward.

like there may be a rapper involved. I just hope she hasn't stuffed her
new album *full* of rap collaborations. That might help in America, but
it's unlikely to appeal to British MOR fans.

I think there is a rude word in the album version, and it obviously is
social comment to some extent.
But yes, I suppose you could loosely associate it with the Will Smith/
Jurrassic 5 school of rapping. Possibly "lite" isn't the perfect term
though.

I don't have to like something to care about the way it's released,
especially when the 2-track CD was more novel.
But actually I don't mind 'Sunrise' - IMO it's a more memorable record than
the new single.

the hop, too!

IMO the best choice of single would have been 'Creepin' In' - her duet
with Dolly Parton.
On a related matter, I just *cannot* figure out why Dolly's '9 to 5'
should be such a steady seller on downloads - it's in the top 200 most
weeks?

I see from the latest new release schedule that it has been moved
forward 5 weeks, to 19th Feb.
I also saw the video today, and it was abysmal. So lacking in
imagination that I could have done better with a camcorder & a £100
budget.

Good question. Sometimes the American branch is referred to as "old-school"
but that wouldn't seem to suit an obviously British performer.
The reason I was trying to avoid the word "lite" was that it might seem to
imply that these people were less rap than the gangster types.

have a *particular* loathing for. More moderate kinds I can occasionally
tolerate.

But the problem is that IMO it give the gangsta types a bit too much credit
to imply that theirs is the definitive or pure form of rap and that any
other version is lesser than it.

More than one I think, and the sound of the records isn't the most
important.
Possibly a different choice of single might have got her a Number 24 instead
of a Number 30 but it would have implied that the second album was more
different from the first one than it actually is.

Of course. But what I mean is that it's a song that a lot of people seem to
know but not many already own; I don't think there have been any
huge-selling Dolly best-of albums with it on.

Well, there's Joss Stone herself, for a start. Remember, this isn't Cilla
Black we're talking about.

Natasha Bedingfield was supposed to be releasing a single this month,
though, wasn't she? And as she's on the same record company as Dido, it's
not all that likely that they'd risk putting both albums out at the same
time even if they could.
FWIW, HMV is currently listing Stone and Armstrong for consecutive weeks in
March, and Bedingfield for April. But that can't be much more than
guesswork.
