Another self-indulgent choice here; this coming Sunday is my wedding
anniversary so what better way to celebrate than post the chart from that
time?

Well, pretty much any way, by the looks of the chart, but I hadn't done a
chart from 2000 before, so you're getting it anyway. Thanks as ever to

Oh dear......

I've heard of just 4 of these.

02.(1) Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again
03.(NE) Tom Jones And Mousse T - Sex Bomb

10.(4) Fragma - Toca's Miracle

58.(51) Madonna - American Pie

That's the lot!

Madison Aveneue at no.1?
Never heard of it!

There won't be as many comments from me this time as there are great
swathes of the chart that I either haven't heard or don't remember.

>
> 01.(NE) Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby [re-issue]

Great number one

> 02.(1) Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again

but this was an awful number one. And it has a very corny spoken middle bit.

> 03.(NE) Tom Jones And Mousse T - Sex Bomb

I remember him being all sweaty performing this on some TV programme at
the time. Positively dripping he was. Most disgusting. A big climber, up
from #164.

> 04.(NE) Armand Van Helden - Koochy

Heard but can't recall

> 05.(2) Oxide And Neutrino - Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)

Dreadful

> 06.(3) Watergate - Heart Of Asia

This was good though. Inventive use of Forbidden Colours / Merry
Christmas Mr Lawrence theme

> 07.(NE) Paul Van Dyk Featuring Saint Etienne - Tell Me Why (The Riddle)

again, heard but can't recall. I think I may have this on some Ibiza
compilation album that I've not played for a few years

> 08.(5) Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch

OK but rather overplayed so got fed up of it.

> 09.(NE) Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man

Vaguely recall it. OK

> 10.(4) Fragma - Toca's Miracle

Good song, very popular at the time

> 11.(6) Sisqo - Thong Song

awful song that seemed to be all over radio at the time

> 12.(NE) Shaft - Mambo Italiano

Fun song

> 13.(7) Craig David - Fill Me In

I wish someone would! He was full of himself at the time and was
something of a media darling back in the day until Bo Selecta ruined his
career

> 14.(9) Toni Braxton - He Wasn't Man Enough

vaguely remember, pretty bland

> 15.(8) Toploader - Achilles Heel

Heard but can't recall but I remember I didn't care much for it. Radio
was still playing Dancing In the Moonlight at the time and so
overshadowed this track.

> 16.(NE) Heather Small - Proud

Hideous song that my local oldies station picked up on at the time for
some reason and was still playing it a few years later. Early M People =
very good. Later M People / Small solo = annoying and bland.

> 17.(10) Sweet Female Attitude - Flowers

I heard this the other day, the first time for quite sometime. Quit
liked it.

> 18.(NE) The Bluetones - Autophilia (Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And
> Love My Car)
> 19.(NE) Donell Jones - Shorty (Got Her Eyes On Me)
> 20.(12) MJ Cole - Crazy Love

don't remember all three

> 21.(11) True Steppers Featuring Dane Bowers - Buggin

awful song

> 22.(14) Lock 'n' Load - Blow Ya Mind

not bad

> 23.(NE) Utah Saints - Funky Music

not heard

> 24.(16) Ricky Martin Featuring Meja - Private Emotion

I had a bit of a soft spot for this but usually ran a mile from anything
connected with Ricky Martin

> 25.(13) Mandy Moore - Candy

don't remember how it sounds but I know I didn't care much for it

> 26.(17) Melanie C Featuring Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes - Never Be The Same Again

bland, inoffensive song

> 27.(15) Made In London - Dirty Water

not heard

> 28.(20) Destiny's Child - Say My Name

not very good

> 29.(19) Sash! - Just Around The Hill

can't remember

> 30.(32) Lonestar - Amazed

sold almost 200,000 copies despite a lowly #21 peak, though it did spend
4 months in the top 40. Chart run, from polyhex:

24-23-30-36-32-30-28-26-{21}-23-22-22-21-26-30-35-37-42-51-57-64-73->22

One of a small handful of songs to reach silver sales status despite not
reaching the top 20.
The others are Freebird EP by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Shame by Evelyn
"Champagne" King. Those 2 managed it when
250,000 sales were needed for silver.

> 31.(18) Lolly - Per Sempre Amore (Forever In Love)

poor song

> 32.(23) Steps - Deeper Shade Of Blue

not bad. Steps were cheesy but did release some good pop songs

> 33.(NE) Faith Hill - Breathe

OK song from the gorgeous country singer

> 34.(21) Precocious Brats/Kevin And Perry - Big Girl
> 35.(NE) Conductor And The Cowboy - Feeling This Way
> 36.(26) Jessica Simpson - I Wanna Love You Forever
> 37.(NE) N-Trance - Shake Ya Body

nope, don't recall any of them

> 38.(30) Richard Ashcroft - A Song For The Lovers

I didn't realise it was 9 years ago that this was released. Good song

> 39.(29) System F - Cry

can't recall. System F is the son of Alvin Stardust!

> 40.(34) Santana Featuring Rob Thomas - Smooth

overplayed song that spent 10 weeks at #1 in the US. OK at first but I
got sick of hearing it.

> 41.(27) Cypress Hill - Rap Superstar/Rock Superstar
> 42.(25) Scooch - The Best Is Yet To Come
> 43.(52) Christina Aguilera - What A Girl Wants

can't recall any of these either

> 44.(36) Moloko - The Time Is Now

still used on Sky Sports News. Good song but again suffered from over
exposure

> 45.(39) Geri Halliwell - Bag It Up

dreadful record from the talentless has been

> 46.(34) Blink 182 - All The Small Things

again, an overplayed song. OK but nothing special

> 47.(58) A1 - Like A Rose
> 48.(40) Eagle-Eye Cherry - Are You Still Having Fun?
> 49.(35) Mary J. Blige - Give Me You

don't recall

> 50.(41) All Saints - Pure Shores

very good song that was heading to be the best selling record of 2000
until Bob The Builder came along!

> 51.(33) TQ - Daily
> 52.(44) Chicane Featuring Bryan Adams - Don't Give Up
> 53.(28) Oasis - Who Feels Love?
> 54.(37) Westlife - Fool Again
> 55.(NE) Stella Browne - Every Woman Needs Love
> 56.(22) Pearl Jam - Nothing As It Seems
> 57.(24) Rhythm Of Life - You Put Me In Heaven With Your Touch
> 58.(51) Madonna - American Pie

Dreadful cover version, Madonna spoiled her revitalised career by
releasing this dirge.

> 59.(46) Dr Dre Featuring Snoop Dogg - Still DRE
> 60.(67) Shania Twain - Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)
> 61.(NE) Incubus - Pardon Me
> 62.(NE) Black Legend - You See The Trouble With Me {Import}

I think this version may actually feature Barry White on vocals and not
the dreadful soundalike they had to eventually use on the UK version.
Still, a poor song and not a patch on the original Bazza version.

> 63.(NE) Tina Arena - Live For The One I Love

another overplayed song that got a bit annoying as a result

Wasn't exactly a vintage year, was it? There are only a few here that
I'd listen to again, or even remember.

>01.(NE) Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby [re-issue]

I can't remember this at all.

>02.(1) Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again

Memorable for the wrong reasons, really.

>03.(NE) Tom Jones And Mousse T - Sex Bomb

From the Reload album, one of the few musical highlights of the year.

>10.(4) Fragma - Toca's Miracle

A minor classic, in its way.

>13.(7) Craig David - Fill Me In

This sort of registers in my memory, but that's about it.

>44.(36) Moloko - The Time Is Now

I don't remember this from the time, but any football fan who
subscribes to Sky Sports will have the hook from the chorus burned
into their brain by now.

>46.(34) Blink 182 - All The Small Things

The high water mark for the Green Day soundalikes. I liked this, and
the album it came from, but they've done nothing of note since.

>58.(51) Madonna - American Pie

Bit of a Marmite cover version this - you either loved it or hated it.

I can't remember any of the rest at all.

Bobbins.

> 02.(1) Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again

Back when she was still doing the faux innocent thing, and made decent
pop records.

> 03.(NE) Tom Jones And Mousse T - Sex Bomb

I *hate* this record. Awful.

> 04.(NE) Armand Van Helden - Koochy

Don't remember this. Not especially great "Cars" based track it turns out.

> 05.(2) Oxide And Neutrino - Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)

Another terrible record.

> 06.(3) Watergate - Heart Of Asia

Another mediocre dance record I don't remember.

> 07.(NE) Paul Van Dyk Featuring Saint Etienne - Tell Me Why (The Riddle)

A boring dance record I don't remember.

> 08.(5) Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch

I own another Bloodhound Gang single, and I have to admit I like this.

> 10.(4) Fragma - Toca's Miracle

A better dance record.

> 11.(6) Sisqo - Thong Song

Another song like Sex Bomb, I really *hate*.

> 13.(7) Craig David - Fill Me In

One of those artists where I find the person much easier to like than
the music. This is not bad.

> 15.(8) Toploader - Achilles Heel

Rather drab AOR fodder.

> 18.(NE) The Bluetones - Autophilia (Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And
> Love My Car)

I guess one of my favourite bands, given I've seen them live 3 times
now. Good record. I own this on Science + Nature which is probably my
favourite Bluetones album.

> 21.(11) True Steppers Featuring Dane Bowers - Buggin

Very 'buggin'.

> 28.(20) Destiny's Child - Say My Name

I don't know if 27yo men are meant to like Destiny's Child, but I do
like quite a lot of their singles, including this one.

> 38.(30) Richard Ashcroft - A Song For The Lovers

Brilliant song. Possibly, along with History, my favourite Richard
Ashcroft penned song ever. I own the single.

> 41.(27) Cypress Hill - Rap Superstar/Rock Superstar

Good record(s).

> 44.(36) Moloko - The Time Is Now

Decent record. Still used by Sky for their Premiership football coverage.

> 46.(34) Blink 182 - All The Small Things

I like when they went serious (I Miss You is gorgeous), but prior to
that had little time for them. This is serviceable pop-punk though.

> 48.(40) Eagle-Eye Cherry - Are You Still Having Fun?

Blast from the past. His last top 40 single, not as bad as I feared when
relistening to it.

> 50.(41) All Saints - Pure Shores

The sort of song I imagine to be a staple of commercial radio. Decent song.

> 52.(44) Chicane Featuring Bryan Adams - Don't Give Up

Bryan Adams in bad record shocker.

> 53.(28) Oasis - Who Feels Love?

Rather leaden effort. Own it on Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.

> 58.(51) Madonna - American Pie

There always seems to be a Madonna record in these charts. Awful.

> 59.(46) Dr Dre Featuring Snoop Dogg - Still DRE

Great record. Own it on 2001.

> 62.(NE) Black Legend - You See The Trouble With Me {Import}

Really like this record still.

> 69.(RE) Macy Gray - Still

I love Macy Gray's voice. Good song.

> 75.(RE) Kelis - Caught Out There

Good song.

Agree about this record - but she wasn't a 'has-been' at the time, of
course - she did have 4 solo #1's, after all. I only like the first &
last of them though.

She looked incredibly HOT in the 'Mi Chico Latino' video!

Not the best time ever for pop music, but I did listen to the charts
many weeks then so do know many of them. And surprisingly perhaps, I
did like quite a few.

> 01.(NE) Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby [re-issue]

OK, pleasant enough, but never one of my favourites. One interesting
thing though about the charts of this time is how complete unknowns
could enter at number one, it did make up to some extent for the
complete lack of climbers in the charts at this period.

> 02.(1) Britney Spears - Oops!... I Did It Again

"Oops.... Same Song Again!" Not bad, but a very cheesy middle bit.

> 03.(NE) Tom Jones And Mousse T - Sex Bomb

Fun in a way, but not actually one of my favourites.

> 04.(NE) Armand Van Helden - Koochy

Based on "Cars". OK, but not as good as his earlier "U Don't Know Me"
which was one of my favourites of this era. Strangely I heard said
song twice last weekend, for the first time in about 5 years.

> 05.(2) Oxide And Neutrino - Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)

Bromide and Mogadino more like. Hated this at the time. Haven't heard
it much recently, thankfully.

> 06.(3) Watergate - Heart Of Asia

Liked this. Seemed to fit in well with this time of year too.

> 07.(NE) Paul Van Dyk Featuring Saint Etienne - Tell Me Why (The Riddle)

I must have heard this at the time but can't recall it now.

> 08.(5) Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch

Got fed up of this fairly quickly.

> 09.(NE) Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man

Can't remember.

> 10.(4) Fragma - Toca's Miracle

Liked this, though I do recall some people absolutely hating it.

> 11.(6) Sisqo - Thong Song

Hmmm... I suspect the innuendo sold it more than the actual song which
was absolute rubbish if I remember correctly.

> 12.(NE) Shaft - Mambo Italiano

TIresome.

> 13.(7) Craig David - Fill Me In

I was never Craig David's greatest fan though I can appreciate why
people like him.

> 14.(9) Toni Braxton - He Wasn't Man Enough

Pleasant enough.

> 15.(8) Toploader - Achilles Heel

Vaguely remember, bit boring IIRC.

> 16.(NE) Heather Small - Proud

Robbie's comments about M People and Heather Small sum up my views
precisely.

> 17.(10) Sweet Female Attitude - Flowers

Quite liked this, even though I often don't like this kind of music.

> 18.(NE) The Bluetones - Autophilia (Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And
> Love My Car)

Despite the interesting title I have no recollection of this at all.
They seemed to have two good songs in the form of "Bluetonic" and
"Slight Return", and then everything else afterwards was bland.

> 19.(NE) Donell Jones - Shorty (Got Her Eyes On Me)

Don't recall.

> 20.(12) MJ Cole - Crazy Love

OK

> 21.(11) True Steppers Featuring Dane Bowers - Buggin

Must have heard this at the time, but I can't remember it now.

> 22.(14) Lock 'n' Load - Blow Ya Mind

?

> 23.(NE) Utah Saints - Funky Music

?

> 24.(16) Ricky Martin Featuring Meja - Private Emotion

OK

> 25.(13) Mandy Moore - Candy

Think this was rubbish.

> 26.(17) Melanie C Featuring Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes - Never Be The Same Again

OK but "I Turn To You" was better.

> 27.(15) Made In London - Dirty Water

Girlband IIRC. Don't remember it though

> 28.(20) Destiny's Child - Say My Name

OK

> 29.(19) Sash! - Just Around The Hill

?

> 30.(32) Lonestar - Amazed

A bit bland, but do recall it being on the charts (low down) most of
the summer.

> 31.(18) Lolly - Per Sempre Amore (Forever In Love)

Was this our Eurovision entry that year?

> 32.(23) Steps - Deeper Shade Of Blue

So so.

> 33.(NE) Faith Hill - Breathe

Don't remember.

> 34.(21) Precocious Brats/Kevin And Perry - Big Girl

Piss take of your typical club record, wasn't it?

> 35.(NE) Conductor And The Cowboy - Feeling This Way

The turn of the millennium was characterised by entries like this. One
week wonders that would go in in the thirties then be gone (and
forgotten) forever.

> 36.(26) Jessica Simpson - I Wanna Love You Forever

Rubbish IIRC

> 37.(NE) N-Trance - Shake Ya Body

Don't remember, in 1995 "Set You Free" quickly became annoying and
their dire version of "Stayin' Alive" is one of the worst covers of
all time.

> 38.(30) Richard Ashcroft - A Song For The Lovers

Quite good. For some reason I thought this came out in June 2001, but
maybe I just heard it on the radio a lot then.

> 39.(29) System F - Cry

Don't remember.

> 40.(34) Santana Featuring Rob Thomas - Smooth

Quite good.

> 41.(27) Cypress Hill - Rap Superstar/Rock Superstar
> 42.(25) Scooch - The Best Is Yet To Come

So that's when they appeared first time round....

> 44.(36) Moloko - The Time Is Now

> 50.(41) All Saints - Pure Shores

> 52.(44) Chicane Featuring Bryan Adams - Don't Give Up

Liked this quite a lot.

> 58.(51) Madonna - American Pie

One of the local radio stations actually does quite interesting
"Golden Hours" in which they play songs from given years which you
don't hear much these days, rather than the tiresome usual suspects.
And so, the other day, I heard this for the first time since probably
about 2002. I thought it was OK, goodish even, then but really didn't
like it much when I heard it the other day.

And that's it. Must get round to commenting on that 1979 chart too...

I don't know... 2000 was slap bang in the middle of the period when the
number one spot was often filled with one week wonders selling to the
fans and not much else. This song seemed to cross over to the mainstream
and certainly was popular at radio

4 number ones in the era of instant number ones does not require much

number one, 41 of which entered at the top. There was a new number one
almost every week.

My equivalent to your 'blank' period would be 1999-2006.
I can never quite remember what your period was but wasn't it *much*
longer than mine, mid 80's to mid 00's something like that?

Roughly mid-80's to 2003, though some of the gap has been filled through
watching the Sky music channels.

Looped riff from 'Cars' by Gary Numan, plus Armand talking through a vocoder

I believe that is the case, although I don't suppose the people who bought

I suppose the idea of sampling a live record was sort of creative. But
having to use a soundalike rather messes it up.

I'm not sure I'd have gone that far, but it's definitely quite underrated. I

I guess most of my exposure to CD has been through his appearances on
Soccer AM where he comes across well, especially as being a genuine
Southampton fan. Also IIRC he was willing to laugh at himself enough to
appear on Bo Selecta.

Football is a sore point at the moment - come Sunday us Geordies could

In a way, of course they weren't complete unknowns, because this had been a
Top 40 hit in 1999. But really the two things are connected: the weeks of
growth when this record might at another time have been climbing into the
Top 10 effectively happened before the single was released.

Yes - I believe the entire plot of the film was about them making this
record and then taking it over to Ibiza and becoming huge stars. Harry
Enfield expressed surprise at the time that he could have claimed 50% of the
publishing for the lyric "All I wanna do is do it, big girl!"

I guess the original version of it is quite chilled (in fact, I think I used
to have it on a chillout CD that came free with a magazine) but the hit
version wouldn't strike me as chilled exactly.
Since you mention it though, that does remind me of one of the things I love
about 'The Time Is Now' - the atmosphere of supressed tension.

Well, people who are fans of the original version obviously love the big
scope of it, which is all totally lost in this version: she only sings half
of it and in a stupid happy-clappy way. And people who don't like the song
probably still don't.

Of course, this was a bit different from the rest of the album because it

What I can't understand is why Dido's record company is letting unsold

Because by the time they're on the shelves, it's too late for the record
company to do anything about it. Their only leverage over the retail price
is to cut the dealer price (or, to get around price limits, give some copies
out for free). And retailers a glut of unsold copies aren't going to want to
buy any more.

Then why don't *they* cut the price then. It's clear she's not intending
to release any more singles from it - the only other way of stimulating
further sales.

Yeah, but you don't listen to the radio, do you?

I'd be surprised if her songs get played much, nowadays?

she still gets played now and again. Oldies stations tend to have a cut
off point of 1999 (due to licence restrictions) so some of her music
gets played on the Magic type stations but her more recent material is
now probably too old (and not that particularly good) for contemporary
radio stations such as your local ILR station.

What licence restrictions??

It's no wonder there's so much music piracy with all this fucking
licensing restriction nonsense around!

Not restrictions in the sense that they can't play music because of some
musicians rule or anything but more when a station applies for a licence
then it has to stipulate the type of output it will carry and it then
has to stick to the terms of that license at the risk of having its
license revoked. Each station has to be licensed by the Radio Authority
(or whatever they are called these days). For example, Radio 2 has to
carry a certain amount of specialist programming aimed at the over 60s,
according to the terms of its license, so that is why you get Friday and
Sunday nights consisting of big band etc music. Classic FM has to carry,
well classical music as well as a certain amount of mainly speech based
programming. And any station that wants to be licensed as an oldies
station aren't going to get a license to play songs from the current top
40. The cut off point is usually songs up to 1999 though it is possible
to hear the odd track from the 2000s now creeping in.

The idea behind the licensing system is to stop all stations turning
into clones of each other and appealing to the lowest common denominator
(to make more money) at the risk of leaving a large % of the population
with little or nothing to listen to.
