Hope some others caught this, It wasnt advertised anywhere, but BBC3
ran an excellent doc last night at 9pm about the Pogues and Kirsty
McColl song Fairytale in New York.

It was all about how much work went into the song, interviewed the
pogues and kirsty mccoll's mum, steve lillywhite (producer and her
husband) and was generally excellent.

Spoiled slightly by Ronan keating's version where they changed the
lyrics, but if it is on again I heartily recommend to anyone for whom
this is also a favourite song

Likely not trailed as it was a repeat from last year.

Whilst the documentary was good it was spoiled by 2 things :

1. Never video from start to finish (when it came near in the closing
credits the screen was shrunk in half and it was talked over).
2. Having the band come into the studio to practice the song but then not
showing them perform it.

I heartily agree, it's one of those songs which always brings a lump to
my throat, a fascinating story of how it came about, shame they didn't
show it all from start to finish.

i agree it was brilliant - one of very very few christmas songs that aren't
cheesy and over the top.
a fascinating documentary and of course all the more poignant with kirsty
taken away from us long before her time.

I'll have to look out for a repeat of this. That damn song always makes me
cry. My grandmother's father was an Irish immigrant who worked for the NYPD.
Everytime 'Fairytale' came on the radio and it got to the bit about Galway
Bay, she'd burst into tears, bless her. And now, of course, it always
reminds me of her. :)

1- indeed, missed that
2- yeah, that was odd. I dont recall anything about this happening last
year (apparently this was a repeat)

I'm sure I saw it some years ago. About the only good christmas song.

Yes. It's a classic. I saw Kirsty MacColl do a concert months before she was
killed, and they did that song. Sigh.

No, but I downloaded the live version from iTunes, and thought it was
pretty dire despite liking some of her other stuff... totally the wrong
kind of voice for the song IMHO. Still, at least it was for a good cause...
