Sofa Spud?

I was expecting to be reading comments about last nights double firing in
the Apprentice.

I also thought Gabrielle was the most attractive female contestant. I looked
her up on the LinkedIn website and found that she is a director of an
architects named Lolli & Square. They designed one of the major shopping
malls in Muscat where my sister has a shop. Gave me a paper thin reason for
wanting her to do well. I often find the following "Your Fired" programme
more entertaining.

I will make an effort to start some threads about programmes I watch.

Two words

Allan Tracy

Just another example of what's called "The Tragedy of the Commons".

Originally applied to common land, what's suggested is that if any
resource is made freely available for everyone to make use of without
restriction, then sooner or later a right arsehole or arseholes are
going to turn up, and ruin things for everyone else.

Which is the latterday history of Usenet, and webforums etc in a nutshell.
An ideal captive audience for all the serial bores, exhibitionits and
cranks out there, once they all learn how to type

I have come to the conclusion that these rightard types, from AT to
Glenn Beck, are attention seekers who don't even believe what they are
saying them selves.

And yes, I am dumb fuck enough to get drawn in to it. Don't worry, I'll
go off and give myself a good hard slapping.

Looking at a couple of months of BARB stats, it's noticeable there's
been a significant drop in viewers. Last year Apprentice was regularly
getting 9 - 10m. This year it's averaginhg a little over 7m. So it looks
like people have become increasingly bored by it. Yet the Beeb are
planning another series. I wonder when the penny will drop?

Dont watch it myself, but I was listening to a review of this series on
Bacon's R5 show. The reviewers were suggesting that the problem with it
is that the contestants aren't the usual buffoons, but more serious
contenders. Thus all the amusement was gone.

Any truth in that?

How many internet providers talk about Usenet as part of the internet?
They all have ads of "get on the web", which to most people usually
means websites, and nothing else. Hell, they don't even push too much
email, they think everyone has web mail junk instead.

The viewing figures may be falling, but I bet any channel controller
would kill for a show that has "only" 7 million viewers.

I don't know, I think there is a point at which people
get tired of the format.

There's some signs of it here with the Eurovision Song
Contest, but it has held for various reality formats--the
most obvious example maybe being Big Brother and a
format which has not just lasted but drives the show being
Time Team.

Remember too that the early episodes of the early series
of the Apprentice were tied into various bookmaking
products and so the tabloids particularly were using it
to entice impulse buys from the full-market-knowledge
fantasists out to wager as profitably as they could as
well as the water-cooler wannabees.

This hasn't been the case for quite some years now as
they have pre-recorded the last few series.

And Countdown has a great host in Nick Hewer, which
is simply not something I can see him having done
otherwise.

Actually, it's long been dead in the UK as well. The message just
