Paul Hyett, Cheltenham (change 'invalid83261' to 'blueyonder' to email me)
Indeed, many have claimed this to be a relative flop. For context, last
year's finallists sold 313,244 copies of 'Hero' in one week of November 2008
in aid of Help For Heroes; this year, however, Leona Lewis's promotional
schedule didn't allow a release before Remembrance Day, so instead the
beneficiary is Great Ormond Street Hospital. Not that I'm going to make any
potentially slanderous comments about the idea of a song written by R-Kelly
and originally recorded by Michael Jackson being used to raise funds for a
children's charity.
> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Jason Derulo #3,
Notice that he takes no chances by actually singing his own name over the
intro.
Despite the slightly unusual choice of sample ('Hide And Seek' by Imogen
Heap, for anyone who was struggling) it still ends up being the record that
proves you can be extremely average.
>Lady Gaga #8
Out tomorrow on CD and picture disc.
> Top 20 : Alesha #15,
Another boring rejected Gary Barlow song inflicted on somebody too
starstruck to turn it down. Her second lowest-charting solo single (after
'Knockdown'), despite the theoretical advantage that this is a previously
unreleased recording.
> F&TM #16,
I've finally decided I don't like this. Sorry.
>Peter Kay #18,
Or Peter Kay's All Star Band, as the official credit has it. Out tomorrow on
DVD (DVD singles, remember them?).
>Pixie Lott #20
Apparently it's not her real name.
> Top 30 : 50 Cent #23,
Out on CD and 12" on the 30th. Which means it might actually be a sizeable
hit.
> Shakira (DIA) #26
Out on CD on the 14th of December, which may be why it's performed
relatively poorly for a song showcased on X-Factor.
> Top 40 : Taken By Trees #38,
Second Top 40 hit for Victoria Bergsman, though neither under her own name.
It's a cover version of 'Sweet Child O'Mine' which is, er, not as bad as
Sheryl Crow's version.
>Agnes #40
I could never tell why her first hit was so popular, so don't expect me to
know why this one isn't.
> New Entries outside the top 40 (plus new peaks) : Chipmunk #44,
Out on CD on the 28th of December.
>Muse #51,
I like this more than the last one. Other people don't seem to.
>Ellie Goulding #53,
Primed to be the star of 2010, hence the intentionally low-key release of
this single. So I'll be charitable and assume that she has some more
interesting tracks up her sleeve.
> Stereophonics #54,
Admittedly, there was no physical release for this single so people had to
wait for the album release date, but this is a pretty puny sale. Even the
Editors single that came out on the same date as their album did better than
this.
> Leona Lewis (SCYHO) #55,
Oasis cover which is, impressively, even more boring than the original.
> N-Dubz (PWF) #62,
The one with Mr Hudson on it.
> Lily Allen #64
The fourth single that doesn't seem to be worth the effort so far.
> Re-entries T75 : Paolo Nutini (LR) #59,
Apparently somebody sang this on X-Factor last Sunday. Are there really so
few songs in the world that they have to do the same ones twice.
>Queen (WWTLF) #63,
One of many Queen songs performed on there last Saturday, but this was
possibly the most sentimental one.
> Snow Patrol (STFTTTB) #65,
Performed at the big Children In Need concert broadcast on Thursday night,
as a duet with Cheryl Cole. Martha Wainwright's views on this are not
recorded.
It's not a popular opinion, but I actually think this might my favourite of
their singles.
>TT (RTW) #67
Speaking of ropey songs written by Gary Barlow.
Two other positions have leaked out:
84: Little Boots
92: Arctic Monkeys
> Albums
> ------
> As expected, Leona claims the #1 spot, albeit with less than half the
> first week sales of her debut album.
Well, that cover probably put enough people off.
Second album from you-know-who, a clearly very expensive production with a
massive roll-call of producers and co-writers including Ryan Tedder, Justin
Timberlake, Xenomania and James Fauntleroy (no idea who he is, actually, but
his name is amusing). And that's not counting Noel Gallagher's unwitting
contribution (see above).
The title, she claims, is because it "describes a big, organic sound."
> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Queen #3,
Just what the world's been waiting for - a new Queen compilation. The
selling point here is that it's the first to assemble tracks from their
entire career (well, up to 1995 anyway - thankfully no trace of Paul
Rodgers) on a single disc, although of course the Platinum Collection
release has all this and more over three discs. And it could have been a
worse selection even if some fans are bemoaning the absence of the Number
One single 'Innuendo'.
The large number of formats include a version with a second CD of commentary
from the two remaining members of the band.
>N-Dubz #6,
A year to the week after their first album, the second set carries on in a
similar vein, although there are a few more guest stars on board this time
including Tinchy Stryder (on a new mix of 'Number One'), Chipmunk and Mr
Hudson. Gary Barlow also chips in as a co-writer. Doesn't he ever go home?
>Will Young #0
Wishful thinking? He's Number 9.
The accurately if uninspiringly titled The Hits completes his contractual
obligation to Sony by collecting all his singles (except 'Anything Is
Possible' which must be one of the biggest hits nobody remembers, and the
Gareth Gates duet) and two new songs. After the first couple of tracks it's
not that bad.
There is a fan-friendly special edition with a DVD of videos (apart from the
aforementioned exceptions).
> Top 20 : Stereophonics #11,
Keep Calm And Carry On - a title which accurately describes my usual
reaction to a new Stereophonics record these days - is their seventh studio
album and if it makes no further progress it's their one not to reach the
Top 10. Even in a busy week that's quite a comedown for them.
There is of course a deluxe version with a behind-the-scenes DVD.
> Them Crooked Vultures #13,
Dave Grohl's third chart entry in as many weeks, this teams him up with Josh
Homme (of Queens Of The Stone Age) and John Paul Jones (ex-Led Zep) both of
whom he's worked with before. Brody Dalle of The Distillers and Spinnerette
describes this record as "amazing" but then she is married to Homme.
The rest of us will struggle to escape the suspicion that this was more fun
to record than to listen to.
> Ronan Keating #16
As a follow-up to the album of covers for Mother's Day, Winter Songs
supposedly couples two new Keating songs with ten covers that bring back
memories of the seas, although how this reconciles with the single 'Stay' (a
song about adultery originally recorded by Sugarland in 2006) I'm not so
sure. Brace yourselves: apparently the version of 'Little Drummer Boy' has
Stephen Gately on backing vocals.
> New entries/new peaks outside the top 20 : Carpenters #21,
Apparently it's the fortieth anniversary of the Carpenters, so the record
company's Pavlovian response was 40/40, a compilation of as many tracks
(although this obviously equates to much more than one song for each year
they were actually active). Pretty much all the songs I've heard of are on
the first disc, apart from a few covers.
> 50 Cent #22,
The much-postponed "fourth" album finally arrives on what I think is at
least its third release date, charting a mere 2o places lower than the last
one. Described as "darker and more aggressive" than his previous material,
it includes guest spots from Eminem, NeYo and R-Kelly, although the hit 'Get
Up' seems to have landed on the cutting-room floor.
> Norah Jones #24,
Her fourth album is called The Fall, but anyone hoping for cover versions of
'Hit The North!' and 'Eat Yourself Fitter' will have to look elsewhere. This
is still advertised as a new direction for Jones, though, following a split
from her long-term partner (and bassist) since the last album. Apparently
she's started playing the guitar too.
Oh, and there's a version with an extra live mini-album for all the good
it's done.
>Foster & Allen #34,
28th UK chart album from the duo who have, without many people noticing,
apparently sold more than a million albums here in this decade alone.
As they've been in the nostalgic covers business since Ronan Keating was in
short trousers, they now "Sing The Million Sellers". Well, some of them
anyway - they don't tackle 'Gangsta's Paradise', 'YMCA', 'Spaceman' or even
'Come On Eileen'.
>John Mayer #35,
Fourth album from the singer-songwriter possibly best-known in Britain for
the fact that Daniel Bedingfield can't understand why he's not more popular.
The fact that he cites Tom Petty as an influence on this album may be a
clue. He also says, apparently with a straight face, "The melodies and
message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity."
Taylor Swift guests on the possible single 'Half Of My Heart'.
>Boys II Men #54
Now, there's a band who must be regretting their name more and more as time
goes by.
It's a covers album of love songs and mostly fairly obvious ones at that,
although 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Dolls is more creepy than romantic and I'm
not entirely sure what they mean by 'Time After Time (Kick Version)'.
Michaek Buble guests on 'When I Fall In Love'.
> Re-entries : James Morrison #45,
Second re-release of the album, including the dull-even-for-him single 'Get
To You' and some extra acoustic versions, one of which is of 'Man In The
Mirror'. I suppose the fans have finally lost patience.

Of course, past form suggests the Black Eyed Peas again... ;-)
> Top 5 : Lady Gaga,
Probable.
> Peter Kay
Not to be ruled out for Number One if it can sell 15k in 24 hours:
especially since it seems more popular on video than in sound only and
high-profile charity singles tend to sell better on CD than download.
> Top 10 : Mariah Carey,
I know what she's doing tonight (or rather isn't, because it's been
pre-recorded) but this may still be too boring.
> Susan Boyle
Probably, but difficult to tell, especially when we don't know for certain
that it'll be available.
> Top 20 : Flo Rida
If it's not already selling as a download (and at time of writing it doesn't
seem to be) then it's unlikely to start suddenly now.
> Top 30 : David Guetta,
Might be lucky enough to scrape the Top 40.
> La Roux,
Considering that 'I'm Not Your Toy' only got this high even with actual
airplay, I'm thinking this one has "flop" written all over it.
> Paramore,
After the album?
>Sting
??????!!!!
> Top 40 : Jamie T,
Reasonable guess.

There is a release from Owl City, but not their recent US chart-topper.

To put it mildly. Although looking at the alternatives it's not that
unfortunate.
> Top 10 NE : Rihanna,
Yep (barring any last-minute moves of course).
>Enya,
Bound to chart somewhere. Whether it can get this far without publicity I'm
not so sure.
>Janet Jackson,
Again, I wouldn't expect this to flop entirely but her career hasn't gone
from strength to strength since the last compilation.
> Mariah Carey,
This seems much more likely.
> Top 20 NE : Aled Jones,
That's what I would have said too, at least until I found out his last
best-of only got to 63.
> Britney, Bryan Ferry,
Both seem about right.
>Fron Choir,
So far they've charted lower with each successive album (9,11,14), so this
may end up just outside.
> Priests,
Yup.
> Scooter
Probably. Another Number One doesn't seem on the cards.
> Others : Slade,
This is just the same Christmas covers album that comes out every few years,
normally at budget price.
> Tom Waits,
Could just about manage it, by the looks of the Amazon chart.
>UB40,
Obviously they'd be hoping for more but this might even be a bridge too far
for them.
>Blur*2
These are the same live albums that charted earlier this year, so probably
not that much of a market left.
Also, watch out for the Chris Moyles album.
> Now 74 will probably be the week's highest seller, though.
For once, though, it's far from certain.

I think that might be slightly misleading in this case; note that the
overall chart position this week was similar to the iTunes position, despite
most other tracks having five or six days' head start. This time last year
TI released a download on a Saturday, climbed to 2 on the Itunes chart and

That's exactly what I did mean - actually it seems there's a CD single that
also has the vid on it but never mind. I'm thinking that if the X-Factor
finallists sell as many CDs as downloads when it's sound-only either way,
this could well sell more physically than digitally: certainly more than
most physicals these days.
Of course, this is selling more video than audio downloads but as you
rightly point out, those aren't contributing to the chart position.

That's hardly in the same league, though: it's a fairly flattering shot of a

Extra *demand*? I can't see how. They might end up selling more in total
than they have so far, but not this week: in this case the nature of the
release is such that the most likely short-term market would be the people
who were at the concerts, and they're the very ones who'd have been most
likely to buy it already.
