Am I right in thinking the "cough cheat" Major is no longer in the UK
armed forces?

If so, is he legally allowed to use the title "Major"?

* On another point -- the "Major" appeared to show a great deal of
blind faith that a man who he met hours earlier knew all the answers!
For all he knew, Tecwen could've been a bullshitter....but Tecwen
deliverded his part of the deal, so pay up, Major!

* Chris Tarrant was sitting exactly opposite the Major and did not
notice anything wrong! At least, not until his employers Celador had a
word with him afterwards.

Yes, you are allowed to refer to yourself by rank, when you reach a certain
rank, not sure what that is though..

Well certainly Major *is* one you're allowed to use. I've got two of
'em as great-uncles.

What rank/position is "sapper"? Doesn't sound a particularly complimentary term
when read in print.

In order [barring regimental variations]:
2nd Lieutenant
Lieutenant
Captain
Major
Liutenant Colonel
Colonel
Brigadier
Major General
Lieutenant General
General
Field Marshall

Captains and above can retain their rank in civilian life; prefixed
titles are not used in full in forms of address - a 2nd Lieut would be
addressed as "Lieutenant," etc.

Isn't this order upside down???

and Lt General as "General"...
but not Field Marshall as "Marshall" methinks !!!!

If a 2nd Lieutenant retired into civilian life (other than being wounded and
then discharged), he would only have done a little bit of service and would
still be wet behind the ears - it is sort of an apprentice officer rank
where they learn how to handle a knife and fork and how NOT to tell an
experienced soldier or NCO what to do !!! Some learn very slowly and I can't
believe that Major Fraud passed his officer's course. He is so wet and
appears to be a real plonker...
But if he had got away with it??????? Not such a dunderhead eh?????

He did remark on several occasions that he didn`t know how the Major could
pick an answer that he had said he had not heard of or had initially
dismissed. He just didn`t attach any suspicians to it.

And poor Major Ingram was "horrified" when he discovered she
knew him. Who did *not* giggle when that came out at the trial?

I'm always shocked at the "why didn't Tarrant hear the coughs"
argument. Of course, Tarrant had an entirely different focus
on, and perception of, events than the audience or the
contestant opposite him. Why do people assume that one mans
perception is very much like that of another? Does nobody read
Conan Doyle anymore? ;)

I thought there were some circumstances in which someone leaving the Army
got an honorary promotion, so e.g. a retired Colonel could call himself
Brigadier. I could be wrong though.
