Legarde needs to keep her nose out of our economy... and to stop using the
IMF to support the Euro. Not her business!

M&S go through these downturns every ten years or so.

I think their buyers find it difficult to make a compromise between
current fashion and old wrinklies clothing.

They are caught between all the designer outlets and the downmarket
chains, and there is not much room for manouvre in the middle.

I wasn't so much referring to their results from today, but the
ecobollox statement emblazoned on their lorries and carrier bags for the
last few years ...

Perhaps I should keep my gob shut on fashion, but I wish they'd still
sell the type of clothes they sold a decade or more ago, at the quality
they were a decade or so ago, though perhaps a size or two larger!

Every country can afford a war where their homeland is under a real
threat. The economy would switch to a war footing and the government
would gain massive control over the population.
Whether it is worth it in economic terms in the long run to start a war
you would have to look to history and see which aggressors have made
long-term gains from starting a war. Everyone can see that Germany and
Japan have both done very badly in the last 60 years or so......

Besides it is a common theme for a government under pressure to point
the finger at a scapegoat or external issue to divert blame or bring the
population together.
Nazis and jews, jehovah's witlesses, trade unionists, boy scouts, swing
music fans etc Just about anyone to be honest.
Argentina and the Falklands, US and communists in the McCarthy era......

the only reason both Germany and Japans economies are so strong is
because the allies pumped billions into the countries , rebuilding the
economies, with state of the art infostructure, latest plant and
equipment etc whilsy thier own business were left with antiquated
outdated equipment and a economy that didnt allow them enough profit
to reinvest in the same anner

Are you referring to the Marshall Plan which ended sixty years ago?

That saw Greece receive roughly the same per capita as Germany.

Why isn't Greece an industrial powerhouse today?

Ball's plan is just plan A.

I'l give Labour their due they have manged, largely by just opposing
every cut, to create the perception that there is a huge difference
between them and the coalition on the economy when there's really a
fag paper's worth.

Or at least there was when Darling was around the two Eds, on the
other hand, were part of the borrowing fest Brown instigated to save
the world.

Sometimes I think Balls really does believe that borrowing for street
hockey coordinators is the road to prosperity

IIRC other countries got a similar amount of money. I think that the
real change was a change in mindset from the pre-war mindset because
they had lost. They tended to clear away a lot of pre-war thinking,
pre-war infrastructure and change on a national level.
Us OTOH were winners, why do winners need to change their winning ways?

Oooh, I think someone is getting a little envious.

And anyway, I wasn't considered that much of a rightard when the
option of voting *no* in the 1975 referendum came up.

It was just that we seemed to have done ok outside of the Common
Market up to that point, and after a decade of De Gaulle's "non" to
our entry, saw the sudden change of heart as only influenced by the
discovery that we had not only lots of fish in our territorial waters,
but lots of oil and gas underneath them.

The realisation that we could become a dumping ground for all the low
quality but cheap food that they produced but would not eat for
themselves, came somewhat later.

Nothing that I have seen since that time has convinced me that joining
had any great advantage over staying independent. I dont think the
1975 referendum split on party lines, because many Tories were
against, but Heath-ites were in favour.

See Dominic Sandbrook's latest historical epic "Seasons in the Sun"
for an amazing photo of Mrs Thatcher at a pro-European rally in 1975.

The Tory party is a two-headed beast. One the one head, you have big
business who *love* the idea of the EU, and the ability it allows them to
carry on fleecing. On the other head are the blue-rinse Bufton-Tufton
brigade, who still think there's honey for tea, and await the national
anthem when the wireless has finished for the night. On most issues (no
welfare state, no taxes for the rich, sterilisation of the lower
classes), you couldn't get a cigarette paper between them. The one issue
guaranteed to provide a frenzy is "Europe", where it seems big business
has the party by the balls.
