Adele - '19' #1
British Sea Power - 'Do You Like Rock Music?' #10
Burial - 'Untrue' #121
Elbow - 'The Seldom Seen Kid' #5
Estelle - 'Shine' #6
The Last Shadow Puppets - 'The Age Of The Understatement' #1
Laura Marling - 'Alas I Cannot Swim' #45
Neon Neon - 'Stainless Style' #67
Portico Quartet - 'Knee-Deep In The North Sea' (not T200)
Robert Plant And Alison Krauss – 'Raising Sand' #2
Radiohead - 'In Rainbows' #1
Rachel Unthank And The Winterset – 'The Bairns' (not T200)
Haven't even heard of 4 of these 12 - sometimes I wonder if the
nomination committee pick 3 or 4 albums at random, just to make it look
as if they've earned their money... :)
And - no Duffy or Coldplay??

I've got Burial and Radiohead of this. Would quite like to get the Elbow
one. In Rainbows is a really good record, and would be a deserving
winner, although they will probably go for someone in greater need of
the exposure.

I've got Elbow and Rachel Unthank, both good but both would be
flattered by the award. Not many of the rest mean much to me - I've
heard bits of Radiohead, BSP and Plant/Krauss. I do wonder how much
is decided by small brown envelopes stuffed with £20m notes.
I'd like just one of those £20m notes! :-)

Well, I've heard *of * 11 of them (no prizes etc) although I may not have
been able to quote all the album titles off the top of my head. I'd say most
of the acts were known in their respective fields, although they obviously
vary in national fame.
The only one of these albums I actually own is In Rainbows, although I have
tracks from a few of the others. I was actually thinking of getting the BSP
album as well, so it's a tiny bit annoying that it'll now look like I was
buying it because it was nominated.
> And - no Duffy or Coldplay??
Doesn't look like it, no. Possibly they didn't want to have both Duffy and
Adele on the same shortlist, although I think I might have chosen the other
way in that case. I don't really think I can believe that Viva La Vida is
the worst Coldplay album, but I guess it depends on the competition.

I have precisely *none* of them - and of the artists I know, none have
the slightest appeal to me.

You're not counting the free download version, are you? :)

None of the albums are the type of music that appeals to me though.

Just a wait a month or two, then. :)
£20,000,000 notes? I'd love to have even *one* of those, let alone an
envelope full. :)
er, sorry, a typo - or perhaps inflation is worse than I thought :-]

How do you know, if you haven't heard of them? :)
You have dinner parties on a coffee table? And you'd play things like
Rachel Unthank? That's seriously weird.

I watched a Richard Gere film the other night and nearly fell out of
armchair when I realised that a Radiohead song ("Exit Music") was
featured as a stand-alone piano piece. It's great to know that truly
great music can span genres instead of just becoming advert jingles.
(SM shakes his head at the notion of "Blue Monday" being used to sell
chocolate bars.)

Well, you know what they say about economic statistics....
Seriously, it's no secret that it costs money to enter for the Mercury - but
in practice this doesn't seem to have the effect you'd have predicted ie a
shortlist dominated by the deep-pocketed. In fact, Music Week pointed out
that there are only four major-label releases out of twelve here.
Perhaps the effect is that the indies have to be more thoughtful about which
albums they choose to enter.
Chris
As it happens, I don't have to - but I don't see why I shouldn't.

And there was me thinking you'd be bang up for a bit of dubstep.

That only makes sense if they do a "Gorillaz", which seems unlikely.
I did once buy an album shortly before the announcement (IIRC on the day
itself) because I was afraid it might win.
Chris
Huh?

Huh again?
In 2001, the first Gorillaz album was nominated, but Damon Albarn complained
and insisted that it be removed. As a result, the subsequent
Gorillaz/Blur/Good Bad & Queen records weren't entered.

As in, I didn't want to buy it the day after it had won, because I didn't
want to look like the sort of person who needed an award to make me buy a
record.
As it turned out, it didn't win anyway though.
Chris
Why did he do that, anyway?

Who'd even know, if you downloaded it, or bought it from Amazon... :)

Sorry to follow myself up but I think they're wrong here - I can count five
major label releases:
Elbow (Fiction)
Estelle (Atlantic)
Laura Marling (EMI)
Robert Plant (Decca)
Rachel Unthank (EMI)
Still doesn't affect the general point though.
Chris
ISTR him complaining about it being too elitist, or not elitist enough or
something like that. Whatever it was didn't bother him when Parklife was
nominated. The Wiki article for the Mercury prize includes a quote from
Murdoc, even though he doesn't actually exist.

This was in 2000, so I wasn't in a position to download it. But I take the
point. It was really just self-justification.
