generally look weak.

Oh, I don't know, whatever you think of the Dizzee record, it's got to
be better than that execrable Ne-Yo track. Couldn't believe how bad that
was.

Rockstar finally falls from the top 40. The song is now on a DFS advert
but there's no chance of the song rebounding as apparently iTunes are no
longer selling the track as a single download, the only way to buy it is
as a single bundle or with the album in its entirety. This explains why
the song went from #40 on iTunes to out of the top 120 they list the
following day and why it has not returned since. It's likely the song
will disappear from the charts altogether next week. Though it is still
available at 7digital.com and some people with itunes claim they can
still download it.

I disagree slightly, although there have been Number Ones I've liked more.

> Dizzee Rascal (ft Calvin Harris)

And Chrome, if we're going to be complete.

>- Dance Wiv Me, goes straight in at #1 on downloads.

Out tomorrow on CD and 12", not that that's likely to matter a lot in
practice.
This is of course his first credited Number One single, although he also
appeared on Band Aid 20's chart-topping single. Unless I'm greatly mistaken,
it's also the first indie release to top the chart on download sales alone.

> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Basshunter #3,

Out tomorrow on CDs and 12".
Worryingly, as of Sunday lunchtime I hadn't actually heard it. And as of
Sunday evening, I can't really remember it.

> Ironik #6

Or "Ironik Featuring Chipmunk" as it's credited in some places.
This has ostensibly climbed on physical release, although it's possible that
the digital release of the acoustic version has also had a significant
effect.
There seem to be further download versions out today so perhaps this isn't
the ultimate peak.

> Top 20 : Ting Tings (SUALMG) #15,

They can go any time they like, as far as I'm concerned.

> Madonna (GI2M) #18

Funny how these rumours about her marriage always seem to coincide with a
new single, isn't it?

> Top 30 : MGMT #22,

How to spell "There's nobody in the sports car" in four letters. Geddit?
Obviously one of the more visible beneficiaries of the televised Glastonbury
coverage, even if not the most obvious ones.

> Freemasons #23,

Where do they get off accusing people of boring them?
This feels like about the tenth rehash of their one idea, and by the looks
of it buyers must be tiring of it.

> Estelle (NSL) #30

After (or perhaps I should say during) the surprise success of 'American
Boy', the surprise non-success of 'No Substitute Love'. In fairness, it's
only really surprising because this is the follow-up to such a smash,
because it's clearly nowhere near as good, and the quotation from George
Michael's 'Faith' just doesn't fit in.

> Re-entries T40 : Jay-Z (99P) #35,

Or 79p, depending on where you go. Boom-boom!
A re-emergence of his Rick Rubin-produced 2004 hit, which becomes his first
solo Top 40 hit since 'Show Me What You Got' just about made it in December
2006.
Only 98 more problems to solve then.

>Maroon 5/Rihanna #36

Five places up from last week, presumably because this week saw the official
download single appear.

> New Entries outside the top 40 (plus new peaks) : Kid Rock #46,

That seems to answer the question of whether it's on iTunes! But it
presumably hasn't been there all week. Out on CD on the 14th.

>Sharleen Spiteri #47,

Out tomorrow on CD.

> Kooks #53,

The peak of that Feeling single, FWIW.

>Goldfrapp #54,

Straggly third single from the album. Apparently the live versions are
better.

> Ladyhawke #61

Debut hit (such as it is) by the 80s-styled New Zealand singer-songwriter.

> Re-entries : Elbow #50,
>Verve #58,

Or The Verve, thanks to lawyers.

>MGMT (TTP) #60, Neil Diamond (SC) #63, Kings Of Leon (F) #64,

Presumably because these were all covered at Glasto. Neil Diamond, of
course, has also worked with Rick Rubin.

>Take That (RTW) #70,

Presumably because there are a lot of people out there who hate music.

>Adele (HG) #74

Out (again) on CD, 7" and 12" on the 21st.

> Albums
> ------
> Coldplay maintain a comfortable lead for their 4th week at #1
>
> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Chris Brown #3,

In an admittedly quiet week at the top end, he manages to buck the Glasto
effect and peak in the second week of this version's run.

> Seth Lakeman #8

Third album from the contemporary folk singer, and his first specifically
recorded for a major label.

> Top 20 : MCR #12,

Live album, the CD portion of which features most of the original Black
Parade album performed in Mexico City. The attached DVD repeats the show and
adds a second gig from Hoboken.

>Eddy Grant #14,

His fourth charting best-of, each one on a different label.
This success should give him hope that people will wanna dance when his
first UK tour in many years hits a venue near them.

>Subways #17

Second album from the power-pop trio, produced by no less than Butch "Vot do
you mean I am vearing a" Vig, presumably in attempt to capture a more
mainstream rock audience.
Since their two main previous claims to fame (they were very young and two
of them were a couple) this seems to have been a wise move, even if radio
isn't yet convinced.
Naturally there's a limited edition with two more songs and a DVD.

> New outside the top 20 : DPT #35,

Romance At Short Notice may be slightly too apt a title for a record that
seems to have slipped out almost unnoticed, despite the success of their
first album.
Still, at least it's done better than the Yeti album.

>G-Unit #39,

Their new album is called TOS. Some people will call that one letter short.
This has been a surprisingly low-key release for an act one of whom was
considered a major star only a couple of years ago.

>David Bowie #61,

Live At Santa Monica '72 was originally a self-explanatory bootleg in which
Bowie and the Spiders From Mars perform a selection of tracks largely from
his early-70s records, plus a cover of 'Waiting For The Man'. Some fans
consider it superior to the official live recordings of the era.
It was first granted a legitimate release in 1994, when it peaked at 74, but
has now joined most of the rest of his back catalogue at EMI.

> Original Cast (Mama Mia) #66,

AFAICT this is the London stage cast recording, as released in 2004.
According to the marketing, they perform "'Money,Money,Money,' 'Dancing
Queen', 'Voulez-Vous', 'Super Trouper', 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' and any
other ABBA hit you can think of!" Which is true if you can't think of
'Fernando'.

> Kings Of Leon (Y&YM/ASH) #67

Both peaked at 3 on their original releases, but this combined version is
counted seperately.

> Re-entries : Aerosmith (BO) #32,

With their lifestyle, I'm not surprised. ;-)
Apparently bored with releasing indistinguishable best-of albums every
couple of years, they've now resorted to just releasing the same one
repeatedly. It also charted in 2006 and 2007.

>Kings Of Leon (BOTT) #37,

Now there's a mental image I didn't want!

> LSP #40,

Probably from promo of the new single, although I haven't seen a lot of
that.

>Abba (Gold) #43,

Mamma Mia, here we go again.

> Next Week

Although I haven't got sales figures here, I'd guess that Mr Rascal must be
a long way ahead on downloads, since Basshunter couldn't even overtake NeYo.

> Top 5 : Basshunter (#2)

This seems very likely. Although that's obviously bad news for Jordin
Sparks.

> Top 10 : Ting Tings (SUALMG),

Might actually happen this week.

> Madonna

That would mean a bigger climb than this week, wouldn't it?

> Top 20 : Last Shadow Puppets

Probably about the best they can expect.

> Top 30 : Kooks,

Again, not the massive hit that once seemed ordained.

>Kid Rock

Yes.

> Top 40 : Feeling,

Following the Hard-Fi precedent, I suppose.

>Nerd,

Since it hasn't quite managed the Top 40 on downloads, it's unlikely to be
massive - noting that unlike the Busta Rhymes tune it's actively
radio-unfriendly.

> Sharleen Spiteri,

As this is doing better than I expected now, I don't really know what to say
here.

>Wombats

Surely this is a re-release too far? After all, 'Backfire At The Disco' only
just made it and that had been less successful before.

> Any other possibilities?

Jay Sean?

> Id love to see Annie go T40 on downloads, but I doubt that's realistic.

It does seem that way, although of course she's effectively untested in that
format.

> Albums
> ------
> Coldplay look likely to have a 5th week at #1, as the new releases
> generally look weak.

I'd tend to agree on that, and there's nothing obvious to climb either.

> Top 10 NE : Black Kids

They might have had more chance if they'd released it earlier.

> Top 20 NE : Beck,

It's slightly hard to tell, since his last album wasn't entitled to a chart
position, but his main releases have gone Top 20 more often than not.

>Biffy Clyro,

I think this may be a budget release, actually. And even if it isn't I
wouldn't bank on it charting this high.

>Supremes

I can't quite work out whether this is a new release or not. It has been
available in the V&A Museum shop for a while.

> Others : Alkaline Trio,

Seems likely on past form.

> Chaka Khan,

What is this? Some cheapo live album?

> Gossip,

This is just a remix album. Even big acts have trouble charting those.

>Hawkwind,

If it didn't chart a couple of weeks ago...

> Leon Jean Marie,

He may manage it, although he hasn't sold a lot of singles.

> Maroon 5,

Will presumably chart, but can't possibly beat the peak of the original
version! The same goes for Jack Johnson, of course.

>Unkle

Yup. It doesn't seem long since their last one does it?

Also, Albert Hammond Jr just about crept into the Top 75 last time, so he
could repeat that success. The Freemasons album joins the reissue pile, if
indeed it is an artist album. Tricky could manage it in a quiet enough week.
And the movie cast recording of Mamma Mia is out tomorrow, so if that's
allowed into the charts, it'll probably get there.

Ah you see, I've only been back listening to daytime Radio 1 for a few
months (previous job didn't have good enough reception) so have not,
knowingly at least, heard any of his other stuff.

But how many people will buy those just for the sake of it? I've found
that only distinguishing feature of most dance remixes tends to be
extended length. Only rarely do they add anything to the original
(especially when the original is also a dance track).

'American Boy' was just a great song. 'No Substitute Love' isn't.
Sometimes just as simple as that. Thought NSL would go a bit higher
though on the back of AB.

I suspect it could actually. They could play the Westlife sample at the

That's a bit odd, isn't it? I suppose the first week was just pent-up

In a way, that's almost my point. Weller and Moz have done pretty well at
shifting physcal singles and they still aren't shifting many downloads. As
Annie hasn't hitherto been very successful on physicals she'd presumably
have to be significantly more popular on downloads in order to chart that
way - which some people are of course, but we wouldn't yet know if she was
one of them.
Having said all that, according to 7digital the single has been available on

But it's lacked radio airplay, and only a sustained chart run can
persuade reluctant radio stations to pick up a single they've previously
ignored.

For example, while Gabriella Cilmi did briefly reach #17 on her initial
airplay run, she swiftly dropped out of the T100. Only since she went
T10 on sales did her airplay pick up as high as #2, though.

IMO, I doubt whether something as insignificant as stickers would have
materially affected his chart position anyway.

He is a fanbase act, and therefore his core support would have bought
the album regardless - but it's hard to imagine anyone else buying the

Of course, there are some of us who buy only one or two Beck albums, but
that market probably wouldn't have bothered with that one.

I'm surprised that a track played that often on R1 wasn't higher than
#48 on airplay - it implies that it got virtually no plays otherwise.

Of course, how much a record's sales are affected by 'free gifts' is
just speculation anyway. Unless the gifts have a significant value of
their own - say similar to the value of the album itself - I really
doubt they'll make any significant difference to sales. On that basis,
chart exclusion seems OTT.

Er, yeah, that was what I was implying. It's not the most surprising thing
in the world.

I mean sell individually - they could still promote the album, although part
of the reason I think they might struggle to sell is that the album's so
cheap now.

I can understand that. But then that's nothing to do with the eligibility.

Well, there has to be a limit somewhere. Even something that doesn't match
the monetary value of the album might do something to change people's minds.
All that said, they wouldn't have made much difference to this one.

It was Benny and Bjorn who wrote the songs, possibly with a bloke called
Stig.

Since that rule has been around for a long while, it must have been a
real issue at *some* point - but now that physical sales (especially
singles) are on the endangered species list, I question the rule's
relevance now. After all, it's hard to give away a sticker or a poster
with a download! :)

You could argue that when the singles are selling is the time to discount
the album, because then people need to be encouraged to buy the longer disc.
[1]
I agree, though, that the label are obviously discounting this because it's
not an obvious massive seller.

Oh yes, they used to give away all manner or ridiculous gimmicks with
singles (before I started buying them, alas).
In fact, the stickers rule has now been abolished for singles - I don't know
whether they bothered to change it for albums, though, since it's so rare
anyway.

If he's getting 33% of 'Dancing Queen' he must be!

One thing I've always wondered about cut-price albums : if the shops
take in less money per copy, surely everyone else down the line - record
companies, artists, etc., also get less?

I just thought of something else in favour of physical formats : it's
hard to get an artist to autograph a download... :)

Generally speaking, yes, unless one of those parties is choosing to take the
hit on its own.

It's hard to get some of them to autograph anything, now they know it'll be
straight onto ebay.

Not to mention this one too, for 'Don't Want To Go To Bed Now'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOQ4ClSqX5E

Which will presumably be the 3rd single.

There seems no benefit in it for most parties, then.

That's a whole separate issue, though.

Regardless of this, it's not exactly possible to autograph a virtual
music file!

In cases like this, the label will be hoping that there are people who'd buy
the MGMT album for £6 but wouldn't pay £11.99 or whatever for it, so they
can increase total sales or at the very least consolidate them.

That is true, but it's vaguely relevant.

Not unless it's been burnt onto a CD, I guess. But there are plenty of other
things they could sign.
Personally, I've never asked a famous person to sign a record other than at
specially organised events in record shops. ISTM that the relatively small
number of people who'll want an autographed copy of any given release won't
save the record industry.

But increasing total sales at the cost of making a loss, doesn't seem
that beneficial to me, unless they're one of the very rare acts who
makes it big world-wide because of that.

MGMT just don't seem to have a wide enough appeal for that to happen
ATM.

If McFly think they'll avoid autograph-hunters by releasing their new

You wouldn't want to overstate the cost though. Especially if multiple
parties are bearing it.

Since they famously do big singing sessions for everything they release,
that hardly seems likely.
