Odd that my two fav singles of 2008 have both been very slow climbers.
The main difference from my POV was, while it took ages for Rockstar to
grow on me, I loved Sweet About Me from the first time I heard it.

It is (unless you happen to be travelling at the start or end of Summertime,
I suppose) but getting tired a bit early is probably more disruptive than
not being able to sleep.
In my personal experience, of course, I'm on holiday when I go to the US, so
I don't have to sleep at the usual times during my first couple of days
after the outward journey - but it's not long after coming home that I have
to go back to work.

CD release, it'd need to start from higher than it now is. So it would have

Nope - the Radiohead albums were only downloadable as complete bundles until
now. Most of the later singles were also available digitally (bundled again)

Really? It would seem a bit counter-intuitive if somebody winning a contest
by singing a song encouraged the viewers to buy a record of somebody else
singing it, at least in these quantities.
Also, whilst only two versions of this song have ever charted, there are
certainly more of them online, so if somebody else sang it not everyone
would get the same version.

It's much more common to climb during a chart run, yes - but it's also
increasingly unlikely that a track which is at the lower end of the 40 on
downloads will be Top 10 the week the CD is released.

Surely counting a continuous run is the only fair way - with re-released
singles, you may be dealing with a new generation of music-listeners.

In that context, I agree (what 'Reet Petite' did is also impressive, but not
