Iindeed so, and even if I'd had more time to draft this stuff I'd have

> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Kid Rock #2
Dear oh dear. Another thing that annoys me about this track is that it
combines samples from a record I liked better and from a record I hate.
BTW, I see 'Sweet Home Alabama' has climbed again thanks to the name check
here; which is slightly ironic in a way, since it is itself an answer song.
>Ting Tings #6
Not gaining many places from physical release, but that's not surprising I
suppose.
> Top 20 : Noah & The Whale #14,
Possibly the best thing about this track is the guest vocal from Mercury
nominee Laura Marling. It's her second such appearance on a Top 40 hit this
year, even though she's yet to come close to one of her own.
>Ida Maria #18,
I've read descriptions of this track that make it sound quite good but I
can't really enjoy it when I hear it.
A reviewer on the HMV site says "They [sic] will be as big as the Ting Tings
are becoming."
>Adele #19*
A re-entry and a new peak.
One unfortunate thing that's happened to this track since the original
release is that we've all heard that awful OneRepublic song with the same
intro. I still think this is her best single though.
> Top 30 : Usher #28,
I was out during most of the countdown, so I still can't remember what this
sounds like. AIUI the remix played by R1 isn't on the physical single.
>Script #30
Out on CD tomorrow.
It seems to have gained a lot of downloads late in the week, for some
reason.
> Top 40 : Ultrabeat v Darren Styles #31
Also out on CD tomorrow, as I seem to say every week.
> Re-entries T40 : Miny Royale #35, SFG (HB) #37
Two of the more visible beneficiaries from the Now Effect.

wouldn't seem to be much return on the big TV appearance.
> Boys Like Girls #72,
By-the-book emo that appears to have been available on download since March.
Presumably it's in a film or something.
> Slipknot #74
Already a re-entry to to Top 100.
> Re-entries : Rihanna (Dis) #47,
AFAIK this still isn't meant to be next single, but maybe the fans are
trying to take this into their own hands.

Guess which popular compilation album features three of these four tracks!
> Albums

I've not seen figures yet but that's plausible.

> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Bachelors #7,
They were all married, you know.
I was going to make some crack about this being why Rock'N'Roll had to
happen, but then I checked the dates and realised it already had. They last
reached tha album chart in 1979 with another compilation, but haven't
troubled the singles listing since 1967.
On the radio this morning "they" were claiming the "credit" for Boyzone.
>Primal Scream #9
Aptly enough, their ninth studio album, and the seventh in a row to reach
the Top 10. For that very reason, though, it doesn't seem much of an
acheivement. Production comes from Paul Epworth (best known for his work
with Bloc Party and the Futureheads) and Bjorn Yttling (best known for his
work with Peter and John) whilst guest performers include Lovefoxx, Linda
Thompson and Josh Homme (again!). If only they had some decent songs they
might get somewhere.
> New outside the top 20 : CSS #32,
A second appearance for Lovefoxx of course. It's their second album too,
although it's been criticised in some quarters for sounding too
conventional.
> Billy Idol #37
Another compilation, for the people who missed Vital Idol, Idol Songs,
Greatest Hits... anyone would think he was being lazy. No, there's nothing
from his Christmas album but there are a couple of new songs and a DVD which
apparently includes an uncensored video for 'Hot In The City' if you want to
see that.
> Re-entries : Sam Sparro #51,
It seems unlikely that this relates to the new single, so I'll assume a
special offer somewhere.
>Usher #73, Take That #75
Which seem to have pushed the U2 albums out.
> Next Week

> It seems likely that Dizzee will be #1 for a 5th week.
Unless Kid Rock is extremely close, that'd be the sensible guess.
It's unlikely to make a massive difference but Dizzee's Glastonbury
performance is out as a download today.
> Top 5 :
Er, why have this category if there's nothing in it.
> Top 10 : Saturdays
I suppose so.
> Top 30 : Pendulum, Pigeon Detectives,
Probably about all they can hope for, since they haven't shifted many
downloads.
>Sam Sparro,
Possibly even more than he can hope for, since he hasn't sold downloads
either and isn't exactly a well-established act. I haven't even heard this.
>Ultrabeat/Darren Styles
I'd tend to agree - the days are gone when dance records climbed a logn way
on physical release.
> Top 40 : Ava Leigh,
I have no idea how this is going to do really.
> Foo Fighters,
This is literally the first I've heard of a new single from them. What's the
title?
>Script,
You think it's going to fall?
>Natty
Probably, although he is some way off on downloads and it looks like it's
only a one-track CD.
> Any other possibilities?
Not really. I presume Noah & The Whale will climb some more though.
> The Verve may go T20 or even T10, if they're out to download
Which I'm pretty sure they're not, but I am as ever open to correction.
> Albums

> Sales are so low now, that almost anything could be #1. :(
I'm sure there's a contradiction there somewhere.
> Probably Coldplay again, though.
Yep - it's the sort of week where something could sneak in but there isn't
really the right sort of something.
> Top 10 NE : Nine Inch Nails
It may not be his biggest seller, now there's no record company. But it
shouldn't be that difficult in a quiet week.
> Top 20 NE : Ida Maria,
Eminently possible off the back of the single.
> Kid Rock
As above, but more so. Presumably the label have been holding back stock.
> Others : Alice Cooper,
Somewhere.
>Hawkwind,
It really might actually come out this week. But they haven't gone Top 75 in
15 years.
> Melee,
They'll probably just about scape it, although I bet the single was expected
to be bigger.
> Simian Mobile Disco
I don't really think they're big enough to sell remix albums.
Soulfly will probably manage it though (with a new album I mean, not a remix
one).

Lovefoxxx - sexy lead singer of indie-electro outfit CSS. Apparently
disappointing second album out this week after bloody good first one.
Linda Thompson - pretty much folk royalty, former wife of Richard Thompson.
Josh Homme - Queens of the Stone Age frontman, one of the leading lights

It probably is more *significant* but I'd say those above two are more

Apparently this was Top 10 on physicals at the start of the week, which
probably says more about how low sales are nowadays then the popularity of

If it does prove to be the case that it's a fan purchase then the format
itself won't be the crucial point, but I see what you mean. However, we
can't assume that it'll be a fan-only purchase. They are offering three
formats for £3 on their website though.
Of course, it's complicated by the fact that the shape of their career meant
they only had three Top 20 hits, though 'Sonnet' could surely have been a
fourth, and they'd presumably have been able to keep having them for a while
had they stayed together. Mind you, even their 1995 fanbase would probably
be enough for a Top 10 at today's sales levels...

Fair enough.

Agreed - but like I said I don't think we can assume it won't. It seems to
be doing alright at radio. It seems like some of the fans aren't actually
quite as keen, but they're probably going to buy it anyway.
Chris
No - I was assuming that it had, but it made so little impression that
I'd forgotten it. :)

The former perhaps, but why the latter?

Does that mean that most official artist websites are registered with
the OCC for chart inclusion?

Which, to be fair, doesn't guarantee anything.
OK, slightly less sense then.

Because it was a big hit too. In fact, judging by airplay and things I
suspect it's actually become more popular than 'Drugs Don't Work' deservedly
or otherwise.

No - mostly they work with third parties who are registered (Trinity Street
in this case):

Indeed not, but if it were being ignored by radio that'd increase the
likelihood of it failing to cross over.
Chris
I have to defer to you on this, since their peak success fell entirely
during my 'off' period.
The only two of their songs I've heard are 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' &
'The Drugs Don't Work', and even then I don't even remember what the
latter sounds like!

Didn't realise that.

Rightly or wrongly, in my mind they are associated with 90's Britpop, a
genre which has never appealed to me.
I was talking more about airply in recent years than at the time.
Of course you don't need me to tell you that 'The Drugs' was a bigger chart
hit at the time, but you'd need to account for the fact that it was released
before the album - and as it turned out, the day after Diana died.

Not exactly a laugh riot, hence the above comment. At the time I thought it
was brilliant, although it hasn't aged quite as well as I thought it would.

Years ago they tended to work through Amazon, but nowadays there seem to be
a lot of rivals who can offer more branded "solutions".

I suspect Richard Ashcroft would be quite insulted. Which seems like reason
enough to say it!
Chris
Which was presumably what kept it to only 1 week at the top?

Grin.
In the sense that it couldn't possibly have managed a second week once the
Elton John record arrived, yes - but in practice it slipped to Number 3
anyway (behind, er, 'You Have Been Loved' by George Michael).
What I was really implying was the opposite: although it was widely expected
to top the chart anyway, the gloomy mood of the time possibly helped to seal
the deal.

I say that as somebody who liked The Verve - but Ashcroft can be quite
annoying.

I assume that was *before* GM's infamous 'indiscretion'... :)

Surely that would be more a case of : the *brakes* don't work...
I think so, yes, although I'm not quite in the mood to Google it.
The next single he released after the incident also entered at Number 2
though - 'Outside'.

Yeah, but if they'd had that ready to release, people might have got
suspicious.
Seriously, as you might recall most radio stations imposed fairly sweeping
limits on what could be played in the few days after she died, so any song
that referred explicitly to death, or crashes or whatever would surely have
been stymied by that. What was wanted was something mournful but not
specific in lyrical content.
Chris
As in 'outside the closet'? :)

There are plenty of people out there who still think that, anyway...

Actually, then, as now, I rarely listened to radio - though I do
remember exactly the same thing happening with TV.
More as in "having it off outdoors" - but yes the song and video do allude
to the incident (to his credit, he seems to have realised that it would be
on everyone's mind anyway).

Really? There are people who think Richard Ashcroft killed Diana??

It's the only Sunday I can remember when they didn't broadcast the Top 40,
although they did drop a couple of tracks when the Queen Mother died.

Dr Feelgood's 'Milk and Alcohol' and Exhorder's 'Incontinence'? :-)
Grin.
