An umrat visited me today,a nice surprise.
I dragged him round my home town and at lunchtime we toasted Charles
and Glyn.
I managed to keep my composure as we went from this place to that
memories of Charles filled our minds.
I showed him a pic of Charles and how I didn't cry I will never know.
Charles my mate is gone. Please can I ask you all if you want to divert
from the header Charles RIP no prob but just change it to books or
whatever.

Seconded, please.

It's a bit much when umrats are trying to catch up or even hoping to share
memories of Charles[1], to choose *his* thread only to find it's gone off
into millions of other filaments - umratic and surely Charles would bee
gleefully partaking of the swerves, but...

[1] any otherats interested in a virtual Nelson's bar[2] to keep meories
alive, now Glynn's joined the honourable company too? Or is it best to keep
on sharing memories publicly as YANAOU?

[2] a private subscription e-mail list could do the trick - got one handy ,
just in case[3], after a scout around with Nick O trying to put an umratic
face on Patagonian tourism, in search of Nelson's whereabouts...

[3] how's this? <nelso...@patagonia.plus.com>
Subscription's easy-peasy (automatic) and it's all free - if it's a naff
idea and I'm out-of-order as a newrat, my sincerest apologies...it's hard to
explain just how special Charles was, even for a newcomer, and just how
noticeable his absence really is.

Happy memories, allrats!

See, it just goes to show - after my own initial shock at seeing
people's messages about Charles swerve off in all directions under the
same header, I've been watching with great pleasure as more messages on
many and various topics are added under the "Charles Hankel RIP"
subject-line (Google has them at 256 this morning) and was thinking to
myself that it would be a fitting Umratic tribute/memorial to Chankel if
threads and messages just carried on being added under that header until
it achieved the longest thread ever status.

Maybe we could compromise by keeping "Charles Hankel RIP" as the header
and adding the swerve topic to it in brackets?

That's just what I think. Maybe I*am*AOU on this?

All the best,
Anne, Gumrat.

I've noticed a drop in posts already. There's a big area missing.
We've shrunken in spite of the threads with tributes and regrets.

I see Serena has already assured you not, but I'll add my "me too"
anyway.

I'm so sorry for all umrats who are struggling with our recent losses,
and for whom said losses struck close to home. But I've actually
found the swerving of threads, and in Glynn's case the immense good
humour of the posts from his family, extremely comforting. The
thought that the departed umrats would be laughing fit to fill their
green wellies at the typically umratic response has been a source of
quiet and reassuring joy.

Anne's suggestion is a fine compromise, if it sits happily with
otherats? My two penn'orth.

I swerve between the two feelings. A slight worry about writing off
topic and then the idea of The Longest Thread being RIP Charles is a
nice one.

Dangerous IMHO. It would be impossible to keep umrats in any kind of
order and before long it would just be another chat place and *somebody*
would start talking about small camels trying to run the group. Umra is
open and chaotic. Long may it rain.

Isn't it just absolutely typical of umra that *any* thread will diverge
in *any* direction? Charles would approve and be amused.

But for *you* Lizbuff....

YA*N*AOU. I had been wondering whether that thread might become the
longest ever, too. Or perhaps the most wide-ranging, or simply largest, or
something.

I'm sorry if it is causing pain to otherrats, though.

I was about to add a "Nelson's Celestial Winebar" to my website, with a book
of remembrance.

I'm inclined to agree, we only set it up as a test, having realised it's a
facility that's on offer free and had no idea what it involves, just to
learn a bit more about how these things work, etc - I think Charles would
approve of that, even (or especially?) if no-one ever uses it!

I do rather like the idea of the longest thread with the most strands etc.

I am probably alone in umra in that I never look at thread titles. -:)

me too, too.

>Anne's suggestion is a fine compromise, if it sits happily with

i think it could be a fine compromise, but you might as likely herd
the cats in the house on coldham's lane i mentioned in another post
this evening, as expect umrats to conform to such a rule.

i've rather given up on the charles rip thread. it's huge, and i may
read it if i ever catch up, but umra's growing as fast as i can read
it, so the chances are that it'll time out on my server before i get
around to it :-(

one of my current projects (what keep me away from umra) is creating a
sort of printed appreciation of charles from what appears in umra.

if umrats want their stuff to appear in the said printed appreciation,
best to avoid the charles rip thread. or mail me a copy [see
footnote to avoid spam trap on this post] under separate brown
wrapper.

my original hope was that i would have a first version available by
the time of the bbq, but i fear that's optimistic (i forgot to take
raw material with me on holiday, even though i did remember to take
the computer...).

There has been a huge surge this weekend. I downloaded this evening and
it seems busier than ever to me - and we have some delurks around (or at
least infrequent contributors posting - not sure which).

I will admit to looking sometimes - and wonder just how we got from
there to here but will admit the journey is usually worthwhile.
