Poor picture quality on digital channels

I've just bought a digital TV (Philips 28DW6557) and I've noticed that the
picture quality on the digital channels isn't that good, while the picture
quality on the analogue channels is perfect.
I'm not sure how to describe the picture, but I was watching the football on
Channel 5, the analogue C5 was fine, but pixels seemed to blend into
squares, mainly on the green football pitch.

Any way of correcting this problem ?

Thanks

Simon

mpeg artefacts -due to the low bitrate.
if they are REALLY bad it may be due to a bad signal, but even with a good
signal they will still be there.

I had one of the first Philips ONdigi Tvs and got rid of it.
Replaced with a normal JVC with a seperate box far better pictures.

One thing I had to do with the Philips to get it to work at all on digital
was to attenuate the aerial signal. Apparently the Philips products are
too sensitive and the stronger analogue signal upsets the weak digital one.

Yup.

Some channels are worse than others though and I'm not even sure if they
change the bitrate from program to program! Scan through them all to
see.
Because of the large quantity of movement in football picture (well it
would be boring if they all stood still.....), and the large quantity of
data changing, this will tend to exaggerate the problem of this
Macroblock pixelisation.
Have a look at news 24. I seem to recall it looks pretty sharp. (News is
boring so they don't have to move much!)

I bought a Tivo a few weeks ago. Was a bit worried that the dreaded MPEG
artifacts were going to be there all the time (as the Tivo processes
EVERYTHING - even 'live' tv)
I don't usually watch the 'old' normal terrestrial channels, but the
first thing that came on the Tivo was BBC1.
I was horrified! It looked like a Real Video internet stream! Absolute
shite..... I was mortified 'no way can I watch that' I thought.
'Bugger.... oh well.... only paid £135 for it... at least I can rip out
the hard disk...'

Then, before whipping out my screwdriver, I though I'd at least have a
play with my new toy first .... changed channels and.... hey presto!
Near perfect pictures!
I am gobsmacked at how utterly, utterly shit the BBC picture was, and
yes, it was the same without the Tivo!!!!

BTW - I do have an old on-digital box for the lounge, but this was on
sky in the tv room!

Oh.... and the Tivo is just fantastic :-)

I've got excellent picture quality on both analogue and digital with this
set, though according to the menus the signal strength is poor -- maybe this
confirms the set not liking strong signals!
