What DVDs were they? Just because they're not labelled "enhanced for
widescreen" or something similar, that doesn't mean they're not in the
original aspect ratio, it means they're not anamorphic conversions. Most
DVDs are in the original aspect ratio, and will be letterboxed on a 4:3
TV (except of course for films where the original aspect ratio *is* 4:3,
which is most films from the 50s or earlier and very few later ones),
although some have a 4:3 pan & scan version on the other side.
The DVD specification allows for the disk to mark a "centre of
attention" to allow the DVD player to pan & scan the picture at an
aspect ratio of 4:3 (or presumably 16:9), but I don't believe that this
has ever actually been implemented. The 4:3 pan & scan setting on your
player is thus in practice identical to 4:3 letterbox.
