It wasn't shown but I thought it was implied. He was so straight laced and
putting on a 'normal' front that he killed to keep the fact that he was
secretly gay hidden. He wouldn't be able to face being branded as a cold
blooded killer after his successful army career and would kill himself to
avoid prison and/or the truth coming out.

Vikings? There ain't no vikings here. Just us honest farmers.
The town was burning, the villagers were dead. They didn't need
those sheep anyway. That's our story and we're sticking to it.

Nah, he didn't- we don't get told *what* happens to him after the credits-
we don't need to. Sure you can say a load of things like: "he probably did
kill himself", or "it was implied" or something along those lines- but what
stops you from making anything up? You could say he was abducted by aliens
and get away with it!

Somebody replied saying that he wouldn't have been able to live with the
fact that he'd killed someone or something. All I can say to that is: why
the hell did he wear gloves to hide his fingerprints then? He probably
wouldn't have been caught, so what's the problem. His problem was Lester,
revealing the secret gay side of his personality- but he's now disposed of
Lester.

I suppose the final answer is that *technically* you're friend is right in
what he says- but in a way you could both be right. Films are brilliant
things because they can be read in many different ways depending on who is
watching them. Take Donnie Darko for instance- how many explanations are
there for that!?

In the commentary, Sam Mendes says the film was originally going to start
with the kids being found guilty of Lester's murder, so presumably the
original idea was that he did get away with it. Killing himself would sort
of give the game away as to who killed Lester. No one would know why he
did it but they'd still know he was the murderer.

Not remotely.

You see him afterwards hiding the gun etc...

FITZ KILLED LESTER. While sitting @ table, Lester reviews/assesses his life, during and after his conversation with Angela's, Q: "How are You?", then Lester's Q to Angela, "How is Janie?" Angela: "Oh, she's really happy". Lester then examines family picture closely, accepting his "place, his lot in life".... his "dream" of revamping his life by initiating a sexual relationship with Angela was just a fantasy. He sees that life is full of shit AND full of beauty (he recounts what was really important, really beautiful in life through a succession of gorgeous images, and the narrative, as well as that Angela is still a virgin despite her actions among other things).

Lester's wife hates herself and everything about her life too. Wife doesn't kill Lester. When she comes through the door, she hasn't seen him dead yet (she comes in through the side door not the front door). Anguished and frustrated because wife realizes that killing Lester wouldn't make anything better, she throws a fit, realizing how close she came to killing him - yet appalled, horrified at herself so throws the gun away, realizing that her problems are greatly her fault. Note her surprised expression, and the startle at hearing the gunshot as she is still outside walking in from the rain.

MOVIE FLAW: it clearly depicts wife arriving at home BEFORE the gunshot. She's in the car outside in the rain, looking at the RED front door of her house (great symbolism), but how is it that she didn't encounter Fitz after the act of killing Lester? (Remember, she's walking into the house in the rain to the SIDE DOOR, and startles when she hears the gunshot - observe the "oh!" look, the "Oh!" that her lips mouth when she hears it. IF SHE'S LOOKING AT THE FRONT DOOR BEFORE GUNSHOT THEN WE SEE SHES WALKING IN THROUGH THE SIDEDOOR WHEN SHE HEARS IT, WOULDN'T SHE HAVE ENCOUNTERED FRITZ EXITING THE SIDE DOOR AFTER HE KILLS LESTER? He couldn't have come out through the front door because wife is looking at it before the shot

I HAD TO TURN ON THE SUBTITLES AND I'M STILL NOT SURE,, BUT IF YOU LISTEN CLOSELY, IT SOUNDS LIKE RICKY IS SAYING "MOM", BUT SUBTITLE SHOWS "WOW".

THIS MOVIE IS BRILLIANT NEVERTHELESS. THERES MULTIPLE STORYLINES GOING ON HERE ON MANY LEVELS. AND GREAT SOUNDSCORE TOO. MUSIC APPEARS TO BE SAME AUTHOR AS PAY IT FORWARD.
