As Editor of this esteemed publication, I'm pleased to say that
the office is now open for submissions, both of words and
pictures.
This year the con book is intended to be A4 in size rather than
last year's A5...
If anyone would like more information about editorial policy
(such as it is) or submission guidelines please feel free to
e-mail me. Or write to me at 29 Langton Avenue, Chelmsford, Essex
CM1 2BW. Or seek me out at the LAC - I'm there for most of the
Sunday meetings, including the March one this coming Sunday. (But
I won't be at Minami - the plastic is still recovering from 2
weeks in the US and a visit to AnimeNation's shop in Tampa. ^_^
)

Also, would you know if the AyaNext committee would be

I have a compilation tape of a few episodes, but should be soon able to

interest in Star Fleet than I had previously imagined...! ^_^

Whilst I would personally love to see X-bomber stuff again, it has been
on UK TV, and might cause problems with rights holders over here.

Just to say that we appreciate the effort, Chris! Thanks!
OK, I know a lot of you went to Minami and had a lot of fun. Would like
to know what you all thought of the video program though. Just wanted to
collect some feedback and find out if *someone's* hard work has been
appreciated. Not much has been said so far about the program and that
either means that the lot of you have been too preoccupied socialising
'round the bar (this IS Minamicon) or you lot were OK with it. I've seen
a few comments on it especially regarding Perfect Blue and some little
comments on Lain and Bubblegum Crisis TV. Any other comments on this
matter for people who actually watched something? Hey...what about all
the cutey stuff shown at the con?
Anyway, happy recovering financially from the con. AyaNext in 7 months

That should keep the hotel happy at least. How about the VR1 though?
Will that still need some security through the night to look after the
gear or will it be broken down each night?

Forgive me. I am still recovering from overloading my brain
by watching _20_ episodes of Gundam Wing in the space of 48 hours.
I do hope this partly answers your question. <grin>
>comments on Lain and Bubblegum Crisis TV. Any other comments on this

As you might be able to guess from the above, I _loved_ Gundam Wing
and my thanks to everyone who made that fansub possible. Now, when
will I get to watch 37-51... <g>
As for the rest of the program - I got a new TV series to fall in
love with. That being Hana Yori Dango. Only 4 episodes shown... <sob>
I really loved that series - pastel-like backgrounds, gorgeous
classical-ish instrumental music, shoujo manga atmosphere and excellent
characters - I mean 4F and Shizuka, not the Mitsukushi-chan. Who was
just exactly the same as most other shoujo manga main characters -
bland. <g> More, more need to watch more...
Wiess Kreuss (or whatever you write that without German keyboard
layout) was highly amuzing and I wouldn't mind watching some more of
that - nice seiyuus, nice story, nice characters.
Record of Lodoss Wars - I only seen first episode, so I didn't really
have enough time to comment on it. But I heard from friends in Japan
that it is not THAT good.
Lain - loved it, of course, and want to see more.
Overall it was a really, REALLY interesting program - thanks to those who
made it happen.

Video Programme? One thing I think needs to be said is please make the
Con book a bit more helpful! Comprehensive, alphabetical and with
fuller ratings would have been a great help...
As for what I saw, Again, Lain was really really good, as was Hana Yori
Dango, it was also good to see a classic like Cats Eyes. ne thing that
might make a better video programme would be if genres of anime were
kept in seperate video rooms, a bit like the Shoujo and Bishounen Ai
stream at Shinnenkai, this just helps make sure there are no overlaps of
things that certain people will want to see. And have a mecha anime
programme! ^_^

Assuming room layout is the same, all you'd need to do would be open the
double doors between Ops and VR1, and since Ops is manned all night,
there'd always be people to look out into VR1 and spot any messing

A pretty good programme, I thought. My main complaint was that on about
three separate occasions I needed to be in 2 or more video rooms at the same
time 8-(
A bit too much Gundam for my tastes, though (like more than none 8-)).
Still, it meant I could spend even more time and money in the dealers' room.

Don't take my earlier negative comments about the subtitling on PB too
seriously - even with that, it was the high point of the video programme.

I didn't see as much of the video programme as I would have liked (I

occasion when I needed to be in 3 places at once, and I had to give up
episode 2 of Lain to see 1 of BGC2040.

I was already hooked on Card Captor Sakura, and only didn't see it at
the Con because I was expecting a tape to turn up with some of the
same episodes on shortly, ditto Fancy Lala. I think they were both
good choices to show. Generally, I thought there was a pretty good
balance of stuff.
And I think I've made my feelings clear on the subject of Hyper

Generally speaking, the people that post here have already seen quite
a lot of anime, so we're only really interested in new stuff. Feedback
from here is going to be pretty unbalanced.(^_^)
Maybe some old stuff should make a re-appearance. Perhaps even some
old commercial releases? UY anyone?
For me, I like cute stuff...

This is a good point, that had also occurred to me. When I first
looked at the video list, I noticed a lot of stuff I wouldn't be going
to see because I had already seen it. This is not a criticism - I
think the programme was well balanced between new and old stuff, and I
think it should certainly include classics that the likes of us have
known for years. In fact I'd suggest perhaps having a quick poll to
suggest classics that a newbie ought to have the chance to see. This
should include a couple (at least) of titles that are available in the
UK, so that they can rush out to the shops to get their own copy.
>Maybe some old stuff should make a re-appearance. Perhaps even some

Yay! UY movie 3 would be my choice, possibly with a short
introduction for newbies to let them know who the main characters are.
Others might include Gunbuster, Project Ako, Gall Force Eternal Story,
Moldiver, early Tenchi, Castle of Cagliostro (or preferably the two
Lupin TV episodes that Miyazaki did).

To echo previous comments, a job well done and you can feel justly
proud. The LANMA contingent thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.
Re the video programme: there was a lot of great material there (I was
particularly anxious to see BGC TV and Nadesico the Movie). I have a
minor quibblette with the scheduling, though. I would question the
wisdom of showing mid-series episodes of a moderately popular series
in VR1 against initial eps of *very* popular series in smaller video
rooms (like Gundam Wing vs Slayers, f'rinstance) with the result of
crowding problems. A quick *wave* to all those in VR3 with whom I

Actually, the only thing that narked me was the translation of Kitsune as
fox. There's no need for it, and it totally misses the point. There's no
equivelant of "Nine-taled Kitsune" in English.

'Kitsune' actually literally does mean fox. However, the idea that they have
magical powers is so deeply set in Japanese culture, that they really should
have put an explanation there somewhere.
To us, a fox is just a fox. To the Japanese, it's comparable in mythos to a
tanuki.
Huh ? Aren't we watching an ENGLISH language fansub here ? As much as
you or i might know what "kitsune" means, your average person that you
may introduce to the series won't...(the only way around this is to put
an explanation in a few times, and then just use the japanese word in
question, like Shinsengumi did with Rurouni Kenshin) so as Sakura is
quite literally a 9 tailed (sorry make that an 8.? tails... :) ) fox
species i don't see the your problem with the translation
there..."kitsune" as I am sure you well know means fox...as for "kyubi"
well...i see a little of what you mean here as this doesn't exactly mean
"nine tails" but in english to the viewer who doesn't know japanese and
also from the visual cue, nine tailed fox is a perfectly adequate
translation, where as "at your service" isn't correct...but flows well
in english for the scene it is depicting I think...

...not quite.
There is no real 'tanuki'. There /is/ a real 'kitsune', not only
that, we have a name for it in English. Don't compare the two, they
ain't the same.
It's just plain inconsistent to call it a 'nine-tailed kitsune', you
should either translate all or none. If you want it to sound
other-worldly call it 'kyuubi no kitsune' (or whatever)

Uh, I think you'll find the key word there was 'comparable'.
> There is no real 'tanuki'. There /is/ a real 'kitsune', not only
> that, we have a name for it in English.
I said they were comparable in mythos. You will find that 99% of the time a
kitsune turns up in Japanese animation or manga, it has magical powers.
There is very deep belief, going back centuries, that foxes are shape
shifters. Of course people don't believe that stuff nowadays, but the
connection will always be there in anime. In fact, as a fan of Japanese
legends I don't recall a single instance in manga or anime where a fox did
not have magical powers of some sort. Actually, Sakura's the first one I've
comes across who doesn't seem able to shapeshift.
It's kind of like writing a story about werewolves, then translating
werewolf to Japanese as 'ookami' with no other explanation.
Besides, it's widely thought that the concept of the tanuki derived from

Actually, they are very comparable. There is even a Japanese saying I
remember reading, comparing tricksters to 'foxes and tanuki'. In that
instance, the kanjis for the two were even written as a compound.

I didn't say this. Simon did.
Anyway, in the translation didn't they go the other way? Kyuubi Fox was the
exact wording they used, IIRC.

Sorry, I was trying to keep the comments to translation...
To take the 'mythos' (I hate that word) Foxes also have a similar role
in English mythology, red-riding hood, for example: a prime example
of a shape-changer (in this case by disguise) being uncovered. This
lends weight to the 'translate' argument. I can't think of an
equivalent to 'tanuki', weasels, badgers, raccoons and the like just
don't fit, foxes seem to do pretty much the same job in Japanese and
English culture.
Although they have a similar role in mythology, I don't think that's a
reasonable justification for using the same rule of translation on
them as words. Particularly in th example of Hyper Police, there is no
need to emphasise the mythical nature of foxes as there's a flashback
that does the job. Compared with the rest of the company, she's
actually quite ordinary.
In anime/manga that have magical animals in them, the humans tend to
be pretty unusual as well. ^_^

o~kamiotoko in fact. By direct analogy with 'nine-tailed fox'
I've seen a more tricky example on a menu in Manchester: they do
'kitsune udon'.
My take on this is that to us, 'fox' doesn't mean 'fried tofu', but it
does mean '(crafty) woodland creature with bushy tail'. Hence, one can
be translated, the other cannot.

I've looked a bit further, and the sources I have to hand aren't in
agreement (with each other)... I'll try to check further. In any case,
for this purpose I think the origin of a word or concept is secondary,
the main purpose of a translation is to convey meaning, not aetiology...

quotation and date would be nice, it sounds old and tricky to
translate. 'Compound' kanji suggests it shouldn't be translated as
'and' anyway.

Sorry, I try to put together a coherent argument and not to criticize
anyone.

Same applies of course, I feel that that is an incorrect, or rather,
inconsistent translation.
Hell, I'm not a professional translator, just an
opinionated amateur...

...due to the lack of the last half-tail, of course ^_^. Sakura takes
it quite badly when Natsuki assumes she _can_ shapeshift (see ep.8).

*IF* I can source copies of eps 6+ subbed, then yes. (Just have to
wait for Steve's PC to break again so's I can fix it, so he owes me
another favour ^_-).
Otherwise you'll just have to wait for me to crack and buy the Jap DVD
box. It probably won't take long ;_;
And here I thought the one at work had just turned into a photocopier with
a phone cable sticking out.

Alex just listed Hyper Police manga vol.5 in his latest update, in
case you missed it. You never saw an order go in so fast...^_-
Can't you recognized your own british spelling of "fox", or should that be
"Foux" (as in colour). @@
