I see the Royal Mint is marking Hello Kitty's 35th birthday by producing a set
of Hello Kitty coins.

The ultimate Hello Kitty merchandise?

Figures. She was always "in" with the British establishment (born in
London, '74. In other words, trained by the best). Weighing the same as
three apples comes in handy when you need to infiltrate the pressure-pad
protected installation where they store the Miffy virus.

Well, until some country applies to become the Kitty Nation. I'm sure
its only a matter of time. It would be a handy way of wiping out
someones national debt.

I have to correct that impression - I made a similar comment to my
brother after a broadcast of The Simpsons episode when they went to
Japan ("Look, thats the Hello! Kitty factory!") and was rather icily
told that he did indeed know who Kitty is. As my brother inherited all
the cool in the family, if he knew, then so does everyone else...!

I also see girls with Hello! Kitty accessories all the time, and my
local newsagents sells Hello! Kitty knick-knacks. A few years ago, I
suspect you'd have been right, but if theres one thing Kitty knows how
to do, its prepare new territories for invasion... ^_^

Thank you for this deep joy .... I note that the scariest of the coins
shows Kitty playing polo, bestride a pony and wielding a lethal-looking
mallet. Ready for "Godzilla v. Hello Kitty"?

Indeed she must, but I suspect that if she's managed to infiltrate such a
prestigious establishment as the Royal Mint she's now unstoppable.

I did like the wording at the bottom of the page:

"Every Hello Kitty fan would be thrilled to receive one of these delightful
limited edition three-coin sets for their birthday or as a special treat."

At between 230 and 920, depending on which coin you choose, I'm sure they
would be thrilled to receive them.

That'll be the new Hello Kitty invasion protection feature built in to some
newer browsers. ^_^

I'm afraid Hello Kitty has achieved world domination, *everyone* knows who she
is. I see lots of girls wearing Hello Kitty T-shirts and Hello Kitty
accessories can be brought easily.

You want to see what the Japanese get. Sanio would put Kitty on unicorn
horn for that market... ^_^

Oh yes she would. Never underestimate the power of a cute kitty. ^_^
She's already conquered a large percentage of the world, what's Godzilla

I interest you in this very rare Garada K-7, sir? Yours for only 30,000

cute or not. ^_^

That is a very good point: de facto as against de jure (by some)...

For the last 10 years (being generous with the timescales), Hollywood
producers have seemed to work on the premise that special effects are
an adequate substitute for plot and style. And their endless remakes of
movies that had generated huge cult followings usually demonstrate how
flawed that premise is.

[1] Not that I suspect anyone will believe me, but a film with giant

Personally, I'm holding off on buying a Blu-Ray drive until something comes out

I'm hoping that they will sort out the region encoding thing soon. I
know theres a couple of players out there that are region free, but you
pay a premium for the privilege... and to think they actually had the

The owners of the film studios wanted region coding, they actually believe it

Actually, as it's different, it's going away from, not coming to(ward) --
hence "different from", not "to"...

I probably don't need to tell you that I failed my English exam at school! ^_^

If he's got a limitless supply of them there's probably something funny going
on. You Know how much the Royal Mint hates competition. ^_^

"U-turn if you want to..." There's a mobile 'phone ringtone of that
available free. If I ever get such a 'phone I might install that!

Oh, that doesn't matter in this specific instance, as such. I was simply
taking the opportunity to explain /why/ it is "from", so that perhaps
several readers might find it easy to remember in future, now it has been
explained. It's all part of the service, and at no extra charge!

I suspect they are being piped through a wormhole from a different
universe that happens to be made primarily of gold...

You mean they would bar (ahem!) anyone else?

There's so many different ring tones available these days, but it can be quite
difficult to find a good old fashioned 'telephone ringing' ring tone.

And has anyone else noticed how much longer people who have fancy ring tones
take to answer their phone because they're listening to their ring tone?

Since I left school several decades ago I don't suppose it matters at all. ^_^

A few of them seem to be either very popular or supplied as default with
some models -- but I miss the old ringing. My favourite from the past was
the high-pitched trimphone warble, which I can emulate accurately(!)

Yes, I have. You'd think they'd get tired of it after a few calls...

I hear that Mr Blair (soon to be EU Emperor, some believe) is so fond of
his own voice that he has it on his 'phone. It's called the "Tone tone"...

I was thinking on throwing out the good with the bad, tarring all with the
same brush, and any other such metaphors that might apply.

If you get rid of one lot, someone's going to have to take over, and
experience shows that they are invariably quite a lot worse than what went
before. The metaphor this time is "Out of the frying pan..."

At the very best you get someone who is no better. Which usually means they
appear to be worse because you're expecting someone better, even if you know
better than to expect someone better!

You would wouldn't you, especially since many of them are really naff.

He's just carrying on the Eurocrat tradition of believing that the EU is one
country like the US.

Quite a lot of polititians like the sound of their own voice, sometimes I think
it's a requirement of the job. ^_^

My mobile text alert tone is the "NewType ping" [1], which I might have
to change to avoid confusion when, as I expect any day now, my powers
develop and I raze you all to ash with high power beam weapons.

Hmm. One of the signs of developing NewType powers is possible insanity
and megalomania. Have I said anything megalomaniac lately?

[1] For those not in the know, this is the sound one hears if NewType
and another NewType is in the vicinity. Its also known as the "Oh, sh*t
we're all going to DIE!" sound.

Is there a *right* end of a mega-particle cannon burst?
Traditionally those sort of things are as dangerous to their operators as they
are to their intended, or unintended, targets!

selotape goes all nasty after a few years.

How do you know that smiley faces had the same meaning for ancient Martians as

Um... er... we are discovered! Start the invasion! And bring the

More like iPods than tripods these days!

Which is a very worthy and much over-looked title, with one of the best
supporting characters ever seen in anime. Pity the actual lead makes
Anthy from Utena look like the physical incarnation of Facebook, though.

I always thought that it was very nice of Woking to build some lovely
sculptures in honour of H.G. Wells and his Martians, despite the fact
they spend most of the book trashing the place. ^_^

Well, it's not as if his Martians singled out Woking, they spent almost all of
the book trashing everywhere!
