I've just watched the first two episodes of Kobato, ....and I wish I hadn't.

I was quite looking forward to seeing Kobato because it's by CLAMP and several
of my favourite series are from them. I'd read some of the manga when it was
serialised in NTUSA and wasn't that impressed. I had hopes for the anime
because with several CLAMP series they've made subtle, and sometimes not so
subtle, changes to the storyline so that the anime was better than the manga it
was based on.

At the start we are introduced to Kobato Hanato a young girl who has come to
Earth so she can fulfil her wish to go to a Certain Place. To do this she must
fill a bottle with scarred hearts, she gets the bottle by the end of the first
episode and by the end of the second she has one scarred heart in it, and going
by how small the heart is and large the bottle is, it's going to be a very long
time before Kobato fills that bottle!

Kobato herself takes the role of clueless, dizzy heroine to a whole new level
and if she really wants to get to that Certain Place she's going to have to get
her act together. She is accompanied by Ioryogi, the obligatory mascot animal,
and like all mascot animals he acts like a stuffed toy whenever there are other
people around. Ioryogi is a blue dog-like fire-breathing creature who wears one
of those dog collars with spikes sticking out of it. He is surely the most
obnoxious, aggressive and bad tempered mascot animal in all of animedom.

Overall, the series didn't impress me. The storyline and the characters both
failed to engage my interest so I won't be watching any more of it.

Sorry? Scarred hearts? Does Kobato walk with a limp and have a lisp

That should have been *scared*, not sacred. Then again, certain

You've not seen Dai Mahou Touge, then? Paya-Tan is probably unique
among mascots in that he is actively trying to kill the MG he mascots
for.

No, I've not seen Dai Mahou Touge, so I'll take your word about Paya-Tan. There
were a couple of times when I wondered if Ioryogi was trying to kill Kobato.
And no, I'm not going to watch any more to find out. I've done the "I'll keep
watching this series in the hope that it will get better" bit before and I'm
not doing it again. ^_^

You're right. I can't think of any MG who had an armadillo as a mascot, cats,
rabbits, lions and even dinosaurs yes, but armadillos no.

I think most mascots have that admirable ambition. Nearly all of them
keep their mouth zipped about it, leaving their gullible and
oh-so-frangible proteges in the dark about their future prospects or
lack thereof.

It's a bit like Coach and the mecha pilots -- lots of gung-ho and
rah-rah, not so much about the pension scheme and gold watch ('cos there
ain't any).

Old MGs, old mecha pilots, rocking-horse shit -- three things that are
the same in terms of probability.

One of them is blue the other is a pale pink, but I'm not sure if you'd call

Mascots have a difficult enough job persuading their proteges to even take on
the job, if they told them what was really involved from the start they'd never
get anyone to even begin to consider taking the job.

Just remember our easy to recall unofficial motto:

"Laws of Physics? We don' need no steekin' Laws of Physics!".

It's at this point that I really begin to worry about what sort of school you
went to, no one ever did things like like that at my old school.

There used to be a slaughterhouse next to my *primary* school. Once a
week, one would hear mysterious animal sounds, followed by the...
silence. The silence... of the lambs... if you will.

I was lucky, my mother grew up on a farm. I'd occasionally walk into
the kitchen to find her with her arm most the way up a dead chicken and
a bowl of face-hugger construction material besides it... ^_^

My first school had this HUGE wall, well it looked HUGE to a 6 year old, I'm
told there was jam factory on the other side of it.

There's just nothing one can say to that! ^_^

We had the impenetrable barrier of trees. Just in case you're not
freaked out enough, every so often a mysterious mechanical arm would
loom over them and do presumably unspeakable things in the slaughter house.

yes, I probably was mecha imprinted from an early age. ^_^
