I agonised for several minutes as to whether to put this on ULY or
ULYN, so apologies if I've got it wrong....

As several of you know me and the missus are planning to move out to
Hebden, renting at first. Can anyone
a) recommend a decent rental agency in town and
b) give any idea of the prices? We currently pay 350 quid a month in
Leeds, what would that rent in Hebden? We'd like a place in the town
itself, not out in a village as we've no car.

Cheers.

Try www.upmystreet.com for estate agents, and possibly for rent
prices. Or http://www.eclipse.co.uk/pens/ for the Hebden Bridge
Website.

But why Heb? Come to Walsden! It's cheaper, and if you get the right
bit of Walsden, v. close to the railway station.

It's a possibility, but there are other reasons for sticking with HB.
Still, you never know... maybe some day.

You do know that they are all hippies, communists, painters and general
social misfits in Hebden (except the Bikers at the top shoulder :)) Don't
you? It's the worlds most secret commune experiment. Be warned!

Or is that why you are going?

But Drew, you're not a hippy! I can't quite see you reminiscing with the
old lags in the tap 'oil of the Trades Club about how wet and muddy it
was at Bickershaw/Lincoln/Watchfield and about how it was possible to
see Captain Beefheart and buy a two pound deal and the latest edition of
Oz magazine and still have change out of a ten bob note[1].

OTOH, after reading your gourmet guide to Amsterdam's coffee shops...;-)

I think you'll enjoy HB, somehow. Good pint in the Fox and Goose too.

I considered all the advice I got about Hebden. "But it's middle-class
and pretentious!" I was told. Then I looked at myself in a mirror one
day and decided I would fit right in!

Anyway, don't write my farewell to Leeds note yet - it depends on
finances and suitable houses. We're checking out the situation next
week some time.

Nothing wrong with the place. You just have to watch that your feet don't
begin to turn upwards. I think Aladdin was born there.

I'll be back in town from Wednesday evening (28th July). Fancy a HB Con? How
about a CinemaCon while the cinema is still there? Anyone else up for one?

Oi! Some of us live there. However, why we moved from Leeds when I was 5 I
shall never know.

Hebden is a special place with loads of characters. Last week at a party in
Tod I heard it likened to Totnes, home to all things weird including my
ex-gf. In Totnes they think they have a spectacular eclipse every night and
they may be right - I think the place will turn normal on August 11th, but I
digress.

Given the image of Hebden with its hippies, freaks and generally spaced-out
existence, I was surprised at how angry they got when they were invaded with
"travellers" two years ago - the travellers were treated with the same
contempt which they get in most places. Hebden clearly has a better class of
social misfit than the average town....

Frighteningly so. In fact, we live in fear of the day They decide to
rejig the county boundaries.

I'm just not sure whether the view or the county would win...

What were the travellers doing, blockading the roads so the lorry

:)

The 'New Age Travellers' are generally made up of middle class kids who
escaped from the type of parent that thrives in Hebden anyway.
I am reminded of the Vis Characters 'The modern parents'.
