Hello All,

As a relative newcomer to the net I am pleased to
have found such a lively, friendly NG. I've been
lurking for some weeks now, following the comings
and goings of all you ulyers, and I thought it only
right that I should make my presence known, as I've
resolved to give up voyeurism for the New
Year.

I'm in North Yorks, not far from Richmond. Anyone
out there from these parts? It's a picturesque but
useless town IMO. If your shopping requirements
are more demanding than Wensleydale cheese, dairy
fudge, and that Foster and Allen CD languishing in
the so-called "music section" of the teensy
Woolworth's - you've had it. Don't get me
wrong, I'm very attached to the place. But I'm afraid
that in the uncompromising quest to preserve its
character, the town has been allowed slowly to die
off. And bizarrely, all Richmond blokes are painters
and decorators, but that's another story.

So I guess I'm no longer a ULY virgin. Hurrah!

Sort of, used to live up near Reeth and went out with a psychopath -
sorry, lass from Richmond for 18 months. Spent a lot of time in the
Buck Inn on Newbiggin, before it was completely ruined by a change of
owner.

I must admit I'm torn between agreeing with you about the character
thing and thinking how good it is that the forces of blandness have
been resisted.

Not this lass mate! Call me choosy, but a brain is a
basic requirement for any BF of mine. As it happens,
I work with squaddies, and the level of intelligence
is frightening.

Yes, but the trouble is that the locals all go and
spend their money elsewhere. A thriving local economy
which didn't have to rely on seasonal visitors would
make it a more interesting, vibrant place all year
round.

The rabbit was fine, but the parakeet will never be quite the same
again.

I can't argue with that. The trick would be to get the thriving economy
without buggering up the town centre. It must be possible somehow.

I used to go out with a lass from Richmond, and most of the
pubs there on a Friday or Saturday night were generally full
of squaddies trying their hardest to impress the locals.
It was also interesting watching the combination of local
police and MOD police trying to break up the many fights that
occured outside as well.

High or low?

My mum and I used to joke that the first thing that's done when anyone joins
the Forces is a lobotomy. Since both my parents were in the Forces we
decided that there's a reversal available when you leave. Sadly, not
everyone takes advantage of it...

Well sad to say, nothing's changed, except that the
fights now occasionally escalate into riots,
especially in the pubs in Catterick itself. Anyone
who has experienced the dubious pleasure of drinking
in Harry's bar, or Staax nightclub (formerly The
Scorpion but affectionately known by those who choose
to avoid it as Scabs) will have the scars to prove
it.

As for Richmond itself, there have been quite a few
serious incidents over the last few months (although
certainly not all caused by or involving squaddies).
I head to Darlo for a night out myself, or better
still, a quiet pub in the dales.

One of my great uncles used to have an antique shop in Richmond. I'm not
sure if it was him or another one who had an auctioneers in Catterick, used
to buy furniture cheap off squaddies moving out and sell it to the next lot
who moved in.

I remember him giving me a fiver and saying that the way the government
were taxing him, it was only worth half a crown to him. In those days half
a crown was a lot of brass!

Used to call in a pub by the station when visiting a mate in Redcar,
nice pint of Tetley Imperial, likely a car park now.

Well, there's usually a good atmosphere in the Arts
Centre (the drinkin's not bad either), and there are
a few decent town centre venues - The Filibuster and
Firkin, and The Penny Farthing both have regular live
bands (Little Stevie and the Rhythm Kings are a
particular favourite) and there's a promising new
trendy joint called Muse. And by that stage of the
evening my critical faculties can no longer be relied
upon.

Yes. Don't usually go home though.
