Well, I suppose it's nice to see SOME activity in this NG.

However, I must point out that, these days, even a straight penny (old
or new) is unlikely to afford you much relief from your predicament. I
believe that most pay-for toilets (which are increasingly becoming the
only ones provided) charge you at least 20p - even if you don't even
need to take the weight off your feet when you use them. In a civilized
society, it's an absolute disgrace.

Ah, but this song dates from the 1890s so a penny would have been a
considerable investment.

However, I hear you and will make sure I carry a couple of 20p coins
upon my person at all times from now on.

How about this one?
"Here I sit, broken hearted.
Paid my penny, only farted."

Indeed - a wise precaution!

To get back on topic, the Thames Valley does seem to have an unusual
variety of conveniences. In Wallingford (I think it is) there’s an
ingenious combination urinal and wash bowl, by the well‐known Wallgate
company. In Reading there’s a loo that cleans itself all over by means
of pop‐out water nozzles (like those French cubicles but on a much
larger scale). And in Covent Garden there’s a pissoir that exceeds even
French standards (but not quite Belgian) in its unabashed lack of
privacy for its users.

Isn't there a bog that comes up out of the road in Broad St after
closing time at the weekends? Never seen it in action so don't know what
"style" it is.

I used to like the cast iron job that was just by Caversham Bridge on
the Reading side. Believe it was transported to some outdoor museum of
buildings somewhere in Sussex(?).

That's probably the Weald and Downland museum. Well worth a look. Just
down the hill from Goodwood Racecourse.

Though they don't admit to it on the exhibit list...

Scroll down about halfway. Now, where's my collection of old pennies?

On my personal Must Visit list. Looks like a pleasant walk from
Chorleywood station.

There was a smaller facility at the junction of Addington Road and
Erleigh Road, where the Erleigh Road trams turned round. In my day it
was hidden behind some advertising hoardings and was one of Reading's
odder sights!
It was removed in the early 80s and is now at the National Tram Museum:

Urinal.net is worth a browse: see the Rothesay, Isle of Bute pictures.
